Goldeneye holds up

CAGiversary!
I'm not quite sure if it's all nostalgia but after setting up and playing a few rounds of Goldeneye on the N64 with a few roommates I still left impressed.

Sure the graphics are less than stellar and the controls take some getting use to...but busting out a headshot with the magnum or a flat out slaughter with the RCP-90 hasn't lost it's touch.

Anyone else brought this out lately?

I still play it and PD often. PD requires me adjust to low-res/cinema to make it playable while Goldeneye is excellent in it's default setting.

ive played golden eye within the last year (which i consider recently for a game that old) with some friends, it was good... great games never get old

It would still be great, but the controls are so wierd now that I am use to Halo controls on consoles, but even any console fps hurts to play compared to playing fps on the computer.

i tried to play PD, but i can hardly see anything in that game. golden is always fun. i cant wait for the half life 2 mod for it.

The HL1 mod for it back in the day wasnt all that great, i mean it reproduced it well but it wasnt that fun, I havent heard much about an hl2 mod but I doubt it will be reallly good.

Perfect Dark's graphics were really muddy. Didn't notice it way back when, but I noticed it a few months ago when I dusted it off again.

It's a catch 22. Play with hi-res and you lose precious frames per second. Play with lo-res and you can't see anything.

As long as I play Goldeneye or PD on my 19 inch TV (instead of 32 inch) I can deal with the muddy graphics. PD is cool for the bots if nothing else. The only thing that I still hate is the blur effect when you get punched. Damned irritating.

Especially in multiplayer when people abuse it. Though it can be amusing to pay it as a game variation. Up the health, all 4 of you come together to the same location, pistol whip each other till you can barely see through your screens, then play "drunk gun fight" by all 4 of you having to stay in immediate vicinity and try to kill each other.

I still need to take the original PD on....any idea how long it would take to beat? It's been sitting on my shelf for months now.

Now that I think about it, I am still on the last stage in the game.

In my house, we had some GE/PD rules.

Rule #1 - Do NOT kill anyone who has spawned and does not have a gun yet.

Rule #2 - No screen looking (and this has carried over into other FPS games of course).

Rule #3 - No Pugilist or Pacifist bots allowed. Stupid punchers screw everything up.

Rule #4 - The only punching you are allowed to do is unarming others. No normal punches.

Rule #5 - Here come the annoying weapon restrictions: No crossbow, tranquilizer,
FRICKIN' N-BOMB, cloaking (if playing with bots because they're too darn efficient with it), and occasionally throwing knives.

awww..but killing the unarmed guy you just happen to run into is priceless.
Nice to see all you nostalgic classic game players pick apart your old favorite games piece by piece.
 It's tough love.

I'm still playing it, i'm in the train level and i'm just starting to figure out what to do at the end, using the watch laser to get out.

I am also playing this game, and i only have 2 more levels left to beat:

I bought that with one of my first paychecks from my first part-time job.

Yeah... Wanted to kill myself.
Ahaha, isn't that the blue cart game.
Yeah. One of the worst games I've ever played.

Perfect Dark is still my all-time favorite FPS and would probably rank in my top 10 games ever. The multiplayer is incredible, much better than in Goldeneye. I'm sure I have logged several hundred hours playing PD against friends and/or bots. I still play both of these games often and enjoy them. I guess if you feel one or both to be unplayable then you've just gotten use to the much-improved graphics of Halo or other recent games in the genre. I always play PD on the default resolution and it seems fine to me.

To this day it's hard to beat the fun of an 8 on 2 match pitting 2 humans against 8 dark first-sims, while only allowing knives and pistols as weapons.

I have to say I liked Goldeneye a ton better than Perfect Dark. I recently picked Perfect Dark back up after not playing it for a couple years and I forgot how bad the framerate was in it. Needless to say its kinda a hard jump to go from consoles today with 30+ fps to Perfect Dark with 10-20. Still love Perfect Dark immensely.

I still break out Goldeneye atleast once a week to play with friends, nothing wrong with revisiting games that were important to you at the time.
