OK I got the game. Sadly, I have to report that the reviews are justified. It's dull. I thought it was going to be cool to play through the Fort Knox level from Goldfinger, but it bore little resemblance to the Fort Knox from the movie. Your character moves like he's wading through water, I can't believe how slow it felt. Is this done to keep the framerate smooth?
Anyway after you reach the end of the level (it just sort of stops when you reach a certain point, regardless of how many people you've killed), there's some bizarre music-video style intro about how Dr.No did something to your eye and now you're hanging out with Goldfinger for some reason, and Scaramanga has given you a new eye. All of this happens in about 30 seconds. Huh? Story please? If they're going to take the trouble to bring in all these Bond characters, how about telling us what the hell is going on? But no, it just throws you into the next level where you just have to shoot at some guys for some reason. No I've got to go back to the cut scene, it was bad! Dr.No and Goldfinger sound absolutely nothing like the movie characters. They've given Dr.No some generic Russian lunatic accent instead of his soft-spoken voice, and Goldfinger sounds like Hitler. They actually did get Christopher Lee to do the voice of Scaramanga, but this just makes Dr.No and Goldfinger sound even worse by comparison. Anyway this is just Bond fanboy nitpicking, so moving on...
Well I did move on, to the multiplayer, and things did get a little better. If you're a Bond fan like me, you'll get a kick out of some of the levels like Scaramanga's Funhouse, and the top of the Golden Gate Bridge. The Deathtraps are pretty cool, like on the Moonraker level you can wait for someone to run underneath the shuttle exhaust, and then flip the switch and watch them burn. Same for the Funhouse level, everyone wants to get the Golden gun, but its right in the middle of a deathtrap where someone can press a button to shoot spikes up through the floor and impale you. So that's a cool feature.
The multiplayer skins are disappointing though, you can only choose from about 8 characters, and most of them are generic "guard" or "scientist" type guys. Of course everyone picked the Goldeneye character because he's the only one who looks vaguely badass. But then I saw someone running around as Oddjob and I found out you can unlock new characters when you play through the single player campaign. Aaah that sucks! The single player and multiplayer should be independent of one another, especially when the single player is so uninspiring that you don't particularly want to play it.
Yeah anyway that's my 2 cents on this game, after one night of play. Hopefully the single player gets better, and they actually explain what the hell is going on. But first impressions do count, and my impression is that this feels rather rushed and underdeveloped. (The far superior Everything or Nothing was released 9 months ago...hmm. They churned this one out pretty quickly, no doubt to get it on the store shelves for Christmas). It just doesn't compete with other shooters on the market right now, its about on a par with Soldier of Fortune 2, which was a perfectly OK shooter, but a newly released shooter really should be better than a two-year old port. I'd recommend this IF you're a hardcore Bond fan and you're going to be using the multiplayer a lot. But if you can only afford one $50 game at the moment, or if you're on the fence about this game, then I have to say, pass. And if you don't have Xbox Live, then I just don't think the single player campaign is worth it. Sigh. I had high hopes for this one too, its just a big step backward after the excellent Everything or Nothing.
