Okay first off I'm down right computer retarded. Second I only need one to hook up my PS2, Xbox and PC all together. The PC is right next to the modem, while the 2 systems are less than 40ft away.

So in genral I'm looing for a cheap router, preferbly one that's easy to use with minimal PC knowledge.

Many thanks to anyone who can offer the slightest help.

Linksys. Search teh ads and get the cheapest one. They are truely plug and play. Modem plugs into teh WAN port of the router, and then there is 5 ports, just plug each console and pc into one. Thats it.

Just got a wireless/wired router from overstock.com for $42 I think is was, it's a Microsoft MN-700. Works great!

A switch and router are different. You have to have the router first. The router takes one internet connection, and lets multiple machines onto the internet. A router usually come with a 4 port switch built in.

Get a D-Link DI-604 if you aren't looking for wireless. It has 4 ports, works great, and you can usually find it in some sort of sale for around 20. Even not on sale it should only cost you about 40 for what is a very reliable router.

Hey BigNick i already have a router but i need more ports i used all 4 on mine . So can i run one of the ports to the switch and then have more ports available.
ok so for what i need, i need to get a router, correct?
Yes, to share a cable or dsl internet connection, you need a router. Then you can plug 4 things into it. If you want to do more, you need a switch.

Sure can. Take a cable and connect a port on the router to the uplink port on the switch.

would that slowdown the internet connection?

Nope, routers and switches run at 100mbs. internet would be 2-3mbs tops. The only way it would be slowed down is if you have a bunch of computers downloading stuff at the same time. I play xbox live and my fam is online and there is no trouble.

here is my setup

cable modem goes to the wired router. wireless router goes to wired router. switch goes to wired router. All computers and consoles go to the switch.

the most that would be downloading at the same time is 2-3, which we do now in the router only, so prefromance would be the same as it is now?

sorry about all the questions i really am a networking idiot
