Good deal for High speed internet service?
This one goes for as low as 19.99 with a 50 bucks installation fee but is 64k-384k download speed high enough for broadband gaming? Any had experience with this service?

mine is 384, and its ok. no major problems. the voice lags every so often, but no game play problems. Oh ya, I use xbox live.

That seems like a pretty decent deal... Myself, I've been out in the boonies for over a year now (rural small stuck in 1971 town hehe). With iffy dialup even SLOW broadband looks miraculous :).

Does the company make you sign a contract, and if so is there a buy out? Even if it's a bit of a hassle, when I was shopping for Broadband a couple years ago, I tried out a couple (the two I could find with no contract) and stuck with cable for reliability.

(btw... Only option out here is DirecWay which is crap with their FAP and equipment costs :( )

for $20 its not terrible.. but 384kb/64kb is barely broadband.. definitely not highband. I'm running 768kb/512kb at home, very fast, never laggy for online gaming... and I managed to haggle my provider (SBC) to give it to me for 31.99 a month.. you may want to look into them.

If you can, I'd try to get atleast 512kb/256kb.

Wow, I feel better about my cable connection now. I pay $45, but I get almost 2700 down and 350 up.
I've never seen 2700kb down paired with 350kb up.. sure you have that right? It'd be a one of a kind.
That's what dslreports clocks my connection at.

I guess it does seem strange. Just ran the same test here at work and came back with 1861 down and 1667 up.

I might be operating under an upload limit at home.
SBC DSL runs $26.99 a month for 1.5Mb down and 384Kbp up. not bad.
That's what they tell you at first, but they automatically put you on a lower tier of service until you call and complain about it. There are numerous sites about their shady business.

I have SBC DSL and it's okay. I very rarely pull down anywhere close to 300 kbps. More like the 200 range. I've called and complained dozens of times but they just generally suck, IMO.

I pay $35 for my Verizon DSL. Theses are my stats.

2004-06-24 22:49:38 EST: 1454 / 132
Your download speed : 1489884 bps, or 1454 kbps.
A 181.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 135823 bps, or 132 kbps.

I avg around 0-120ms on pings when I'm playing online, and about the same with my Playstation 2. No compliants.

For the doubters:

Seems kinda slow to me but if that's all you can get., go for it. At least it's better than 56k.

I'm getting 3meg download for $40 a month throigh Earthlink.net cable broadband.

Comparing cable speed to dsl speed is sort of apples and oranges. Cable speeds look great on paper until you realize you're sharing bandwidth with everyone in your neighborhood. Cable broadband usually ends up around the 1024/512 or less mark.

I only mentioned it out of similar interest.

And for the record, my cable speed has actually increased over time, and has never decreased. Note that it wasn't a constant gradual increase. Just that one day things started moving faster.

Also, to follow-up, that test I posted must have been a fluke, because I ran it again later and got 350 up.
