I'm trying to expand my gaming interests a bit, So I thought I'd try my hand at an RPG or two. My only requirement is that it's not a turn bases RPG. I hate turn based combat.

I know nothing of console RPGs, so enlighten me.

Radiata Stories is easy for the most part and fun.

Rogue Galaxy is awesome

Star Ocean Til the End of Time is also pretty good.
Is Dark Cloud action RPG? If so how is it?
Not sure about the first one, but the 2nd one is. I really didn't like it though at all.

Alternatively, Rogue Galaxy is made by the same people and I love that game.

Any of the .hack games, Ys, Dark Cloud 2, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Okami, and Rouge Galaxy. Star Ocean 3, Tales of Legendia and Abyss has real time battle

I hear Genji has real time weapon change? Probably not the same thing though )

On topic I'm still trying to get ahold of Rogue Galaxy, too rich for my blood still :(
If anyone wants to check my list and maybe trade it to me that would be cool :)

What about the champions (norrath and return to arms) games?

Dark Cloud 2 wins at existence. I can't seem to get into Rogue Galaxy, but thats because I OCD and want to complete every single thing as soon as i can and get burnt out on combat.

And generally the tales games are sexfully.

Kingdom Hearts 2 is one of the best games of that generation.

X-Men Legends 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance 1 & 2, Champions of Norrath & Champions: Return to Arms, and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance are all pretty good action / rpgs. These games are also basically built for multiplayer.

I second Star Ocean: Til The End of Time and Dark Cloud 2, both are some of my favorite RPGs for the ps2. I liked the story in DC2 a little more than in SO:TTEoT, simply because it's a little light hearted and sweet. :bouncy: That doesnt mean SO's story is bad, I like it, but in a different way. It's more sc-fi, which is AWSOME.

I've seen some copies of SO on ebay go for less than $10, thats INCLUDING shipping and it's NOT the GH version!! It was also complete, with case, manual and the outer box. It goes for $15 for a used copy ay eb/gs.

DC2 is about $17.99 (or something) used at eb/gs.

I'd definately go with Star Ocean for a non-turn based yet still epic PS2 rpg (Also costs $20 or less).

The baldur's gate/champions/x-men legends/ultimate alliance are more on the action side then traditional console rpg (more computeresq I believe). Of them, Baldur's gate, while probably the oldest if you don't mind the graphics (which aren't that bad), are probably the best. The X-Men ones are a bit buggy, and I think ultimate alliance also.

I'm also waiting for a rogue galaxy price drop, but everyone seems to love it, only a few more months for it to hit GH.

Try Tales of the Abyss ($30 on amazon right now) or Dark Cloud 2 (good luck finding it.) I would discourage trying Star Ocean 3.

PSX Alundra (More of a platformer but good game none-the-less)
PSX Star Ocean: The Second Story
PSX Tales of Destiny
PSX Tales of Destiny II (Also known as Tales of Eternia)

PS2 Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (Decent co-op)
PS2 Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II (Decent co-op)
PS2 Champions of Norrath: Realms of EverQuest (Decent co-op)
PS2 Champions: Return to Arms (Decent co-op)
PS2 Dark Cloud (Not as good as DC2 gameplay wise)
PS2 Dark Cloud 2
PS2 Kingdom Hearts
PS2 Kingdom Heart 2 (I didn't like 2 but the general gameplay was better)
PS2 Odins Sphere
PS2 Rogue Galaxy
PS2 Shining Force EXA (Decent mindless hack'n'slash)
PS2 Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time
PS2 Tales of Legendia (One of the weaker Tales games IMO)
PS2 Tales of the Abyss
PS2 Ys: Ark of Napishtim (Part of a long continual series but earlier ones not translated nor needed to be played)

Bolded ones are the main ones I recommend shooting for over the others. As for the underlined they're ones you should be able to find $20 or under. The rest are a little bit more pricey but definitely worth it I think. Possibly gamestop/gamecrazy has some cheap used copies of the non-underlined ones.

The list is more or less personal favorites of mine that I've played. There are some others I've played but not really worth mentioning.

I would go for one from each group here:

Tri-Ace:
Radiata Stories
Valkyrie Profile 2
Star Ocean 3

Square-Enix:
Kingdom Hearts 1
Kingdom Hearts 2

Level 5:
Dark Cloud
Dark Cloud 2
Rogue Galaxy

Namco:
Tales of Legendia
Tales of the Abyss

That should do it, I made my picks bold.

Rogue Galaxy and Tales of the Abyss are the only two PS2 non-turn-based RPGs I'd really recommend. Star Ocean 3 and Valkyrie Profile 2 are trash.

Final Fantasy XII isn't exactly turn-based... it's a little more dynamic than that, but I'm hooked, to say the least. And I generally do not like turn-based RPG's. Ys: The Ark of Napishtim is ok, just played through that. It's pretty easy and short, but the story is pretty crap and the voice acting and cut scenes are horrible (moreso the voice acting). Don't start out with that. The Shining Force action RPG's are incredibly boring. You should definitely start out with Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Incredibly fun, addicting, and great for two player. The graphics are still great and it's a first generation PS2 game.

Alundra is a great action-adventure RPG for the PSX. If you like Zelda, you will like Alundra.

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain is another good action-adventure RPG for the PSX. It's getting on in age, but certainly better than any of its 3D sequels.

As for my personal favorite, that goes to Vagrant Story. It's not turn-based, but it is menu-based. Want to attack? Hit the proper button, a menu comes up, select your target, and off you go.

As for the PS2, there are the Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance games, the Champions of Norrath games, and the oft forgotten The Bard's Tale.
No, no it isn't. Especially GU. God that game is horrible.
i've only played part 1 of the first .hack awhile ago, never tried GU

Like they say, opinions are like assholes...

Anyways, I enjoy the .hack series. I've managed to finish those games. Most Tales games I never finish because I get bored with them about halfway through.

I loved Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria, it's one of my favorite games. I would recommend it to anyone, especially since it can be found pretty cheap now (Less than $30.).

I'd also recommend the Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance games(though be prepared to pay out the nose for part 2 on PS2 OR Xbox), the Champions Of Norrath games and another dungeon crawler I really liked, Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel.

I still can't stomach ANY turn based RPGs or any strategy based ones or anything other than me just hitting one button to attack my enemies and another to jump over chasms, with the occasional usual RPG leveling up thrown in for good measure.

Good luck anyway OP and hopefully, you find the games I mentioned to be as fun as I did. My one friend and I played for something like 5-6 hours in ONE night on the first game, so they have a possibility of becoming addicting.

I had baulders gate 2 on the gamcube awhile ago and it was a great game. If you can find it on the cheap, get it for sure and play it with a friend

That it was and even moreso when I got my copy on Xbox for about $17. LOL I made a thread bragging about it and everything, people seriously hated me for a while on here because of it.

Well, I wouldn't go as far to say that Star Ocean 3 is trash, persay. Just... lacking on some crucial levels. And given my (irrational) liking for Valkyrie Profile 2, I won't say anything more on that besides the notion that the game is actually turn based (Especially with the mindset that each 'step' counts as a turn).

Tales of the Abyss would fit the criteria rather well. Sure, the Tales of series has always been a second-tier, if not yet still fun, RPG series, and the game itself is riddled with more technical flaws than other wise, but it'll be a fun time-sink. Or rather, you won't become fully jaded until the second playthrough.

However, if you're obsessive complusive when it comes to collectables, Abyss will piss the living hell out of you without a guide/FAQ at your constant side. Anybody who's played it will know exactly what I'm talking about.

Definitely suggest Champions of Norrath or Champions: RtA .. great games and I don't think they're too much, one was on sale at Gamestop recently.
