Good survival horror movies.
Check out The Beach. A great movie I expected not to like and appreciate more and more after repeat viewings.
Personally I believe the book cannot really be successfully translated into a movie, plus the renationalization of the characters really ruined the movie for me.
Man did Vin Diesel ever screw up that franchise.
I thought the international version of Riddick was pretty good. The cut that made it in theaters was not

Here's a few more I thought of:

Mad Max
The Road Warrior
original Texas Chainsaw Massacre
original Salem's Lot (televised, available on DVD)
Uprising (televised, available on DVD)
The Fog
Stalag 17
The Great Escape
Wrong Turn (basically Texas Chainsaw Massacre in West Virginia...where it's more likely to actually happen)

All feature people basically at the mercy of some sort of malicious force.

The Shining
I fucking hate Kubrick (only liked Eyes Wide Shut, but can't figure out why and only after a third viewing).

But good call. That's a bullseye.
Sleepy Hollow - You really get the feeling that the town is on the edge of civilization

The Shining

Dude sleepy hallow with J.Depp is one of my best films.

That movie is just fing crazy.

Also I watched the first half of the Shin'ing Do you want to get sued?(Simpons reference) and cant bring myself to watch the rest. That movie is like 2 and half hours long.......

I have actually seen most of the movies you guys have posted but keep on posting. Might as well turn this into a discussion. I didnt know this many people liked the genre.

I just recently watched. Plane of the Dead. Thats right....zombies on a 747. HA! that movie was crazy bad.

By the way I dont know why but I really like Wrong Turn. Its by no means a good movie....but I like it none the less.

You havent seen bad until youve seen Hood of the dead, Its got zombies...DOING DRIVE BY'S IN LOWRIDERS!! and MEXICAN ZOMBIES THAT MOAN "ORALEEEEEYYY!!"

Also if you liked "Wrong Turn" its loosely based (very very loosely) on "Deliverence" which is a Man's Man's Man movie, about survival, rednecks, banjo's, Burt Reynolds badassery, and Sodomy.

Deliverance..that movie single handly ended my blocker account as I lost the VHS when I rented it all those years ago.

I saw Gang of the dead on netflix recently and almost watched it....I will eventually get to it but not now.

I recommend a movie called. Bio-Zombie. To anyone who has not seen it. Its a Japanese film but it should have sub titles. Its a comedy kinda like Shaun of the dead.

Zombie come into a mall and these 2 knuckle heads try to get out. I thought it was funny as hell.

Sphere is a pretty good movie with Samuel L Jackson in it. Its a crazy sci fi movie but it fits the bill. Also Event Horizon is decent.

Thats actually a flick from HK.

Junk is another pretty cool little zombie flick from Japan.

Though they don't follow the anime, the live action Zeiram flicks are pretty good.

If you can find a boot or wait for it to finally hit dvd Living Dead In Tokyo Bay is a really cool low budget flim

Evil Dead Trap would also fit under the survival horror banner and its a pretty good flick.

Though its a bit hit or miss on if you dig it, 964 Pinocchio and its prequel, Rubber's Lover was really good.

Another good one is Electric Dragon 80,000 Volts

Then there is Tetsuo that fits though pretty much every flick by Shinya Tsukomoto fits under the banner.

Evil Dead 2
Army of Darkness

Hell yea.

THIS IS MY BOOMSTICK

Just finished watching the 70s Omega Man.

Pretty good although it ended in crazy 70s style.

I cant believe they kill him in the last 2 min of the movie....and with a spear from 80 yards away. The was the best spear throw I have ever seen.

Now on to some of other suggestions.
I just thought of two more, although you probably saw them ... The Village and The Hills Have Eyes
I think he could pass on The Village, its an awful movie and the so called "Twist" could be seen coming 10 seconds into the movie. also it proves my theory that M. Night Shamalamadingdong is a horrible writer.

The Hills Have eyes is alright at best, but other than that its a mindless gore/rape-fest.

Blood diamond has that Survival feeling, as well as children of men

The Edge - Survival movie, two guys that hate eachother stuck in the wilderness fighting psychotic bears. Awesome.

Hildago was a great movie, had that whole Indiana Jones vibe to it.

Oh and How can i forget, Lawrence of Arabia, one of the best of that whole Survival movie thing, its like Indiana Jones and Spartacus had a baby.
Blood diamond has that Survival feeling, as well as children of men
Children of Man - how could I forget this movie! Fantastic visuals, really did something I've never seen in a movie before. Highly recommended - good call Joe2187
I watch Cube about 15 times. I always show it to anyone who says they havent seen it. And surprisingly A lot of people have not seen that movie.

Cube 2 was alright but not as good.
Cube Zero wasn't bad.

Yeah and what was up with that scene where the zombies are chasing him, so he picks up the Afro lady and they start popping wheelies and evil kenevil tricks with the chopper in the stadium. That was so over the top.

Motorcycle stunts were popular in the 70s.
Judgment Night (the movie not the Twilight Zone episode)
The Running Man
Predator
The Omega Man
Event Horizon
The Poseidon Adventure
Chopping Mall (think Dawn of the Dead with robots)
lol man chopping mall was so cheesy but cool. i loved the commercial for it " where shoping will cost you an arm or a leg" . that commercial had me scared but the movie itself was laughable but worth seeing.

oh yeah another good survival horr film is Night of the Demons. hott chicks and a cool ending.
Ravenous... ahahahahahaha. That movie is worth it for the countless laughs you will have at the awesomeness (cheesiness)
another great cheesy film. definelty worth it just for the final fight.

oh yeh other 2 films The Howling 1 and 2. 2 is especially good due to mass amounts of nudity.Dog soldiers is good to.
I just thought of two more, although you probably saw them ... The Village and The Hills Have Eyes
This is not to bash you mak, I very much thank you for your suggestions and hope that you will continue.

Yeah, like Joe said The village was a horrid movie. And I dont think it really fits in survival horror...as there is nothing in the movie that is survival.....or horror.

Also The Hills Have Eyes is a perfect example of what I dont want and why I made this thread in the first place. I have never seen it...nor will I ever want to see it. I do not respect anyone who worked/filmed/wrote a movie like that.

Its incredibly hard to find a "survival horror" movie because they all get lumped into the same category as piss poor 2nd rate hack and slash gore fest just for the sake of gore oh look please like our movie because we put boobs in it.

Its not that I dislike gore....but I really looking for a movie with a real plot that that is developed. And like The hills have eyes and 90% of horror movies are horror because the writer/director are not talented enough to make it any thing more than that. So they fill it will "shock" scenes to fill in all the blanks of their movie.

There are only a handful of directors in the world that are good enough to pull of a rape scene or a sex scene. I am all for boobies like the next guy. But when you need to fill 10 min or 20 min of a movie because you cant write a real scene you put in sex scene.

Just to reiterate I am looking for survival horror with an emphasis on the survival part. 28 days/weeks later is a perfect example. Little gorey but great plot with the main char going through different levels of paranoia and fear, even movies like Children of Men work fine because of the way its written.

So just remember this is a thread about Survival first...horror and gore second.

Thanks to all again.

I cant find Chopping mall anywhere though.....

I'm assuming you saw Grindhouse, half of it is a great zombie flick. I'm waiting till they come out with the special collector's edition two-set before buying.

I'll also throw in a freebie:

If no one's said it yet, The Descent was awesome. Just make sure you get the director's cut, they cut out the last 2 minutes for the American release.

That was an awesome movie much better than The Cave or whatever.

Yeah its one of the few movies I actually own....
Event Horizon
I saw Event Horizon in theaters, started out great, ended up terrible. Sunshine came much closer to being a great movie, but again the ending mucked it all up. I don't know why they insist on turning a great thriller into a monster movie.

They're all nipping at the heels of 2001 - but end up being a poor man's Alien.
The Descent was great.

Soodmeg, based on your post (72) I think you'd really like Sunshine. Have you seen it yet?
aw man sunshine was horrible. it was like a kid friendly watered down event horizon with a lame ending. i was hopin for more to but man it was such a letdown. nice sfx though.

Wild Zero - on the cheesy side of zombie flicks. Features Japanese Punk Rock band Guitar Wolf as themselves. The movie has it's moments, gay band manager, trannie love interest, samurai sword, alien space crafts, loud music, drinking game, etc......
I am legend ?
Movie = incredibly disappointing, with lame monsters/zombies

Book (short story) = fan-fucking-tastic

oh yeah six string samurai. its kind of a survivor story in the sense it has this whole highlander kind fo plot going on in a post apocalyptic world.
The Descent was great.

Soodmeg, based on your post (72) I think you'd really like Sunshine. Have you seen it yet?
Sunshine? I have never even heard of it. Completely in the dark on that one. Care to enlighten?
Sunshine? I have never even heard of it. Completely in the dark on that one. Care to enlighten?
It's set in the future where the sun is dying. A group of scientist are taking a spaceship with a payload of nuclear devices composed of all the uranium/plutanium on Earth and they're trying to detonate it in the sun to kick start it. Along the way they encountered the ship of the first mission that disappeared mysteriously seven years earlier. I shant say more than that.

Thanks I am going to have to check into that tomorrow.

As anyone seen Dairy of the Dead and care to share how it went.

agreed... book was great.

While i was not a fan of the CG in the movie (horrible imo).... for a hollywood butchering .... i didn't think it was all that bad.. probably because of will smith's performance.

I just got Rescue Dawn so I am going to watch that. Tell you guys how I like it after the viewing.
