Got a brown stink bug here

Read a little about it just now. Apparently it's not native to the United States and it's all over the place now. It's a pest to corn crops and other plants. Should I kill it or let it live?

If you care you can report it to your State Department of Agriculture since it's an invasive crop destroying insect, they may come by and stray them or can point you in the direction of someone who will.

fuck. I'd be a billionaire, even if I sold them a buck each. The side of the house is covered in them. It's like we rotate between ladybugs and those nasty-ass Starship Trooper stinkbugs.

I imagine we're talking about the same bug. Brown, but has like a yellow chevron on it's back, like it's a Private in some sort of insect military? My dad pinches them between his fingers and they make a popping noise. Like he's got some sort of variant of a bubble wrap obsession.

I'm guessing you're talking about the brown marmorated stink bug? Like the other guy said report it to your Dept. of Agriculture. They're pretty widespread but the Dept. will probably want to know unless it's not a new find/area.

Just squash it if it's already in your area or toss it into a pill bottle or the like if you're not sure and want to call.

Pssh, one? My window was open during most of the summer and while I don't know how (there's a screen with a small gap for the crank) I must have removed 30+ from the room over a month or two. You might not wanna smash it though. Yes they stink (none of that here) but I read the smell attracts more. Yellow chevron? No, they're all one color and are shaped like a shield.

I've had 5 or 6 of them in my house over the past 6 months - they always end up committing suicide by running into the light bulbs. Kinda amusing how terrible they are at flying, you can usually hear them pinging off of objects.

That only happens if there's an image of Michael Jackson glowing on its rear. ;)

Okay, I know what ones you're talking about now. The ones I have are called "Western Conifer Seed" bugs. It's the other bug known as a stinkbug. Same deal, they release a smell when threatened or if they get crushed.

That's what I've got all over the place. Slightly different pattern on its back (which may be a regional thing), but that's definitely the bug.

I like the Western Conifers. I usually have red-backed ones in my house from time to time. They remind me of a mix of ladybugs and fireflies, in the way they never really bother you, they're slow, mostly walk instead of fly, and they don't bite.

I usually let them hang out in my basement when I see one or two, they seem to make good spider food. the only time I had an issue with them was one night I was playing I think Dead Space 2, and I had no less than 3 of them crawl on my arm while I was playing. None of them survived that night.
