Just got my HDD a couple days ago at CC. Took quite a bit of driving but finally found a CC that had them in stock. I'm pleased that I won't be needing to buy any more memory cards and FFXI is enjoyable thus far. I'm actually considering playing for more than just the free trial period. A huge deal for me since the only other MMORPG I got into was PSO on DC/Cube.

So here's my question, what else can I do with the HDD? I vaguely know about the HD Loader/Advance thing, is there anything else I should know about?

certain games will use it to cache on, like they do on the Xbox. ESPN 2K5 titles do this as well as RE:Outbreak.

You should go get RE:Outbreak if you got the HDD. Without it its not a very good game due to loading time, but with it, its a really good game.

It seems like to get the most out of it I should get the HD Loader/Advance. So for those who know anything about them..I got a couple questions..

Whats the difference/which is better?

Does it really improve load times that much?

Is there a reliable website to get it or go for ebay?
I don't have Outbreak, but I have NFL and NHL 2k5. Will it improve my gameplay experience at all?
I'm not sure about those two games, but NBA 2k5 will have a half-time show of the top 2 players' best plays of the half. Also, you can save directly to the HDD, so no memory card is needed.

There are some games that you can save directly to the hard drive but it's really a small percentage. Honestly, not many games support the HDD and with the slim PS2 now I don't see that number rising.

HD Loader isn't worth it IMO. Unless you want to do that for illegal things but that's your business. Lots of games aren't supported by it and the load times aren't lessened THAT much. Keep playing FFXI. That game and RE:Outbreak are about the only 2 things that use it good.

I almost forgot to mention, you can backup your saves on your memory card to your hard drive. You just can't access them in game.

good question can sumone answer it??
ive seen a segment about it on g4tech tv and i wanna back up all my rpgs.
can i back up ps 1 titles to it or do i have to take the risk of playing them from the disc? (really dont wanna damage my rare rpgs like valkyrie profile. dam the battle system is sweet)

I think it's safe to assume that RE: Outbreak File #2 will use it. I've also seen that Agetec is leaving HDD support in Wild Arms: Alter Code F.

I was thinking of buying an HDD, but you can't save many games to the HDD? Thats stupid. I thought it would be like the Xbox. Screw this.

It's pretty much one big memory card. You don't have to worry about owning more then one memory card now, It's just a matter of managing your save files.

I heard it's a MUST for RE:Outbreak and cuts down the loading times from thrity seconds to ten seconds ;) I'm sure the sequel will also suport the HD.

I got it because of FFXI. I was planning on playing that game for a few years. I only lasted three months :(
Can you move your savefiles from your memory card to the HDD and back? Like an archive?
yes you can.

I've only experience one game that won't move over to the HDD out of all my saves from about 60 to 70 different games. The game was Magic Pengel, which was a pretty obscure title, so that may be why it didn't work.

can anyone answer these ques of mine????

I think the Japanese versions of some of the the Square Enix games lets you install the games on the HDD, but I don't know if you can with their American games.
suprising that it hasnt been said yet, but Socom 2 supports the hdd, and gives you lots of new maps to play on,
Well, it only does so ever so slightly. The game itself doesn't use the HDD one bit as far as game loading and cacheing is concerned. And as for the new maps, a measly three is pretty f'n far from "lots."

Its not that Magic Pengel won't work with the HDD, you jsut can't move Magic Pengel data. I noticed that today when I was moving my saves around. I'm not sure what other game data you can't move, but I'm sure theres a couple others.
Yeah,... I got mine for free after the FFXI BETA.

Still haven't opened it.

Just an obsolete collector's item for me.

:)
Didn't you need to use the HDD for the beta test?

HD Advance is better than HD Loader. Better compatibility with larger hard drives is the first thing that comes to my mind. If you get one, get the Advance.

Some games yes, there are shorter load times.

I don't know of any good reliable sites to buy it from, sorry.

No, you can't put PS1 games on it, PS2 games only.

IMO, it's not worth the $30-40 that it goes for. Many games don't work with it and the loading times aren't THAT much better. Your choice though.

Don't waste money on unofficial pirate software then. Just do the memory card exploit and load HDL or HDA off of your memory card. And no, you don't need a modded system to do this.

No. THe PS1 had no IDE interface support and thus there is no way to make it work on the PS2 in PS1 mode. It is potentially possible with software acting as a driver but this would have to reside in the 4 MB of PS1 RAM and would cause problems with such a large proportion of games as to make the effort worthless.
Is there a deal at CC on the PS2 HD? If so what is it? thanks.
There *was*... like 2 weeks ago. CC lowered the price of FFXI with HDD to like 37 bucks, but I doubt you can find them now... most CCs have been looted clean already.

There are other games that won't let you move saved games to the HDD or another memory card for the matter. I believe Dead or Alive: Hardcore's save file (not the system file) was one of them.
