Republicans vote against Mother’s Day.»

On Wednesday, the House took up the seemingly uncontroversial H. Res. 1113, “Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother’s Day.” The resolution initially passed 412 to 0, until Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) rose in protest:
Mr. Speaker, I ask for a recorded vote because I’m sure every member wants their mother to know that they have supported the goals of Mother’s Day.
Tiahrt’s mother, however, may be disappointed to know that her son did not support Mother’s Day. He and 177 other Republicans decided to cast their vote against mothers. Watch it:

When asked why the GOP switched their votes, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said, “Oh, we just wanted to make sure that everyone was on record in support of Mother’s Day.” (Even though he also was actually on record against Mother’s Day.) The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank reports that this move was a procedural tactic to “bring the House to a standstill.”

here is the voting breakdown http://www.govtrack.us/congress/vote.xpd?vote=h2008-275

I really do hate politics, and I am sure both parties have done this before, but this is just ridiculous.

i am not a fan of this stuff either, except it was a Republican sponsored vote, and then the person who sponsored switched their vote specifically to oppose the Dems and slow the process.

This is their cunning plan?

I'm pretty sure she didn't.
I betcha she was a mother, and it looks like the only support she got was from a braided rope.

Did anybody watch the part of Sicko where the congressmen were talking about healthcare for the elderly, and some congressman got all fired up b/c someone challenging the bill (which actually took away funding for elderly healthcare) mentioned not loving their mothers.

It was great, he was like "I dare someone to show me they love their mother more than me! Nobody loves their mother more than I do. I love my mother dearly!"

Dude, we get it! You love your mom.

Groundbreaking.

fuckin hilarious.
His last name is Boehner, do you expect this shit to make sense?
Pronounced "Bay-nur."

Also, this is silly on several levels, and useful in none. Don't get me wrong: it's funny, but I don't think anyone would really to the logical end and think "Republicans hate Democrats so much that they'll vote against their mothers for it" in a meaningful way - but not supporting an empty symbolic bill? So what?

I was to be a congressperson who proposes bills like this all the time.

H. Res. 1234: To recognize and salute the lifelong presence and support of delicious, delicious milkshakes in shaping the American childhood experience.

H. Res. 1234: To declare this day "The lady actress who plays Ray's mother on 'Everybody Loves Raymond'" day.

H. Res. 1234: fuck this, who wants to go get Chinese?

I disagree. His last name is an erection and I'm not letting him get out of it with his funny pronunciations. This is America, we speak American here.

To keep in touch with video games, remember the first conversation with the Cuban gang leader in Vice City?

"I love women. I love my mother."
