Hi all!

After realizing how much I am pumping into my VZ Navigator and Data Plan for GPS per year I decided that it would be best to get myself an actual GPS Unit. A number of things I liked about the VZ Navigator was it's ability to speak street names and give me traffic updates. Voice was pretty good to understand. But now it's time to actually get a unit and I am having trouble finding a unit with similar built in features for less than 200 :(

This is what I am looking for

MUST HAVE

-Text to Speech (that is easy and loud enough to understand)
-Some sort of traffic updates and rerouting.
-Strong battery life.

-Could use (but not nessasary)

-Blue Tooth.
-FM transmitter
-Weather updates.
-MP3 playback

A 4 inch wide screen would be nice but if a 3.5 is fine then that will do.

Although I was hoping that I could buy it from best buy since I have a lot of store credits, gift cards and reward zone certificates, at this point I would be willing to buy it from anywhere online (like amazon).

Thanks

I like the Magellan Maestro 4250.
The two biggest names in GPS are Garmin and Magellan so either should suffice but, I got mine for $108!

The biggest one to stay away from is anything Delorme in my opinion.

I was looking at the Navigon 7100

My bro has the tom tom 130 (I think)
My mom has the Garmin Nuvi 205

But like I said, I am looking for GPS units with the specifications I am looking for (text to speech and traffic)

I bought a Navigon for my wife for Xmas. It works great and map updates are very cheap (~$40 for 3 years worth) compared to other providers and updated quarterly. Signing up for lifetime traffic is also cheap (~$30) .
I also got that OmniTech from Staples today - Will be messing around with it tonight. Def worth the $50 though
is that a get what you paid for or get MORE than what you paid for?!?!?
ok... looks like I am going to get the Garmin Nuvi 760 for 209 on Amazon.

hmm... grey is not bad, but to charge 20 bucks more for the same model in BLACK...come on guys!
I was just about to recommend that one. That's what I have, from Amazon as well. You won't go wrong with Garmin. That's the absolute best GPS you're going to find for $200 or less.
My dad has a tom tom. Don't know the model name but I always see him using it.
I recommend staying as far away from the TomTom's as possible. The current version of the OS (which is required to download the most recent maps), is FULL of bugs and memory leaks. It's the biggest waste of $300 dollars that I've ever spent money on.

TomTom 930 & 930T
• FM transmitter has been disabled, but is still advertised on the packaging.
• Voice navigation quits once memory leak gets to peak level. This takes about 2 minutes with BlueTooth turned on, and can only be corrected by uninstalling the OS and voices, and then resetting the unit, and reinstalling everything. The process takes about 20 minutes. With BlueTooth turned OFF. The unit is more stable, but not perfect.
• When the unit looses the GPS signal it FREAKS OUT, navigating to and scrolling through the three main menu pages, selections being made by random/phantom methods.

In short, the unit has all of the features that you stated that you wanted above (using an SD Card or the iPod cable for the 910/920 the unit has better than average MP3 capabilities and control), however it us literally unusable until they get the OS issues squared away. ...I really hope someone at TomTom has lost their job over this.

As it stands, I would have been better off getting $300 dollars in $1's and chucking them out the freakin' window. That act at least would have benefitted someone, if not me, AND given me the same amount of navigation for my money...
Based on your requirements I would go with the 265WT Garmin due to free lifetime traffic. Although it is ad-supported it's better than paying $60 annually for traffic subscriptions. It also seems to have a faster time locking a signal and a better map screen.

*SCRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEACHHHHH*

ack, same site I have been reading...yet argh I missed this part.

Amazon just dropped the 760 to under $200 while the 265wt jumped to $220.

I have a TomTom One from about 3 years ago or so. It works fine for me. Only downsides for it are that the suction cup does not stay in the window even after I clean both it and the window. Their is a street in my town that when I use this thing it tells me to turn into a turn into a house instead of onto the street. Also I had to buy an external antenna because it did not want to work in my car.

I have updated it a few times since I bought it so I hope that issue with the street has been fixed but I have to say that it has as of now been only that street. I also have to say no matter what one you get check to see if you can use an external antenna. Mine would not pick up a satellite in the car I have at all, no matter how nice the weather was. Now I get from 3 on the worse day to 12 or 16 on the best day.

As for what one to get I'm not sure. Mine is so old that I don't even know what the new ones come with. I do however suggest you check about an external antenna if the one you buy does not get that good of a signal. Or atleast figure that into the price just incase you will need one. Not all cars need one but due to coatings on the window and different things that are used when the car is made prevent the internal antenna from picking up the signal from the satellites.

Tom Tom could give out free blow jobs with every 1,000 miles navigated and I would still not buy one. Their initial PR campaign was so obnoxious I swore to never do business with them.

You'll never get me to buy something on the sole basis of an ad but you can keep me away.

The Nuvi 760 is awesome, but I will say that on a recent trip, the traffic updates were useless. On a recent 2,000 mile road trip, I got maybe 3 traffic updates, all of which just highlighted a road in yellow and told me there would be a one minute delay. There were major delays that it didn't seem to know about.

Get a GPS with Lane Assist, this is a new feature.
Garmin and Magellan have been in the business long enough.
I favor Garmin

well I ordered the Garmin Nuvi 760, since user feedback from that site told me stuff that contradicted some of the vs stuff. As long as the 760 plays well with my voyager and Moto SP700 Speakerphone then I am good to go.
