WHEN REPORTING TRADE-IN VALUES PLEASE POST BASE VALUES & SYSTEM IT IS FOR.

First post contains promo information & useful information and frequently asked questions. Second post has the values for games/hardware for Microsoft devices. Third post has the values for games/hardware for Nintendo consoles and the fourth post has the values for Nintendo handhelds. Fifth post has the values for games/hardware for Sony consoles and the sixth post has the values for Sony handhelds.

These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Is there any way to look at what the previous values reported on a game?
You can search through this thread and previous ones to see what a game has been reported in the past. With the TIV Tracker you can sort by date and then go through the list of past updated values through that as well. Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

I don't want to get hassled about the values I post, how can I get the information out there?
If you do not feel comfortable or willing to put the values in the thread you have two options available. You can input them in the TIV tracker or you can send them to me via PM. Either way the database and these lists will be updated. Putting them into the TIV tracker does save me some time later on.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

What are the refurb fees on games?
There appears to be set prices for set value ranges. We aren't 100% certain on the splits just yet. Here is what we have currently:
$0.25-$2 Value: $0.75 Refurb Fee
$2.01-$4 Value: $1 Refurb Fee
$4.01-$7 Value: $2 Refurb Fee
$7.01-$10 Value: $3 Refurb Fee
$10.01 & Higher Value: $4 Refurb Fee
This information isn't guaranteed by any mean and we are still working on nailing it down.


What are the refurb fees on consoles?
They are listed in the hardware TIV section, highlight in red.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Why didn't the percent bonus go for my accessory for a system that was included?
Unless stated otherwise, and they are rarely included, the bonuses never apply to accessories. Except the EDGE card of course.

I traded in a bunch of games for the "Trade X, get $X bonus" promo and it gave me the percentage bonus instead?
I can't give concretes on why this happens. GameStop computers are normally pretty good at giving you the better promo. In the case of a percentage bonus being run at the same time as a "Trade X, get $X" promo, things can get messy. The system appears to only give one promo on games per transaction so if you had a few games that you want to go to the percentage bonus and a stack for the "Trade X, Get $X" it will regularly apply the percentage to all of the games. Your best bet is to do all "Trade X, Get $X" games in one transaction on their own. The GameStop clerk may say that the system will figure it all out, tell them you want a separate transaction anyway. As always, check your receipt before you leave the store.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2) *Fat unit requires either back cover or network adapter*
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and put a refurb fee on the console. The refurb fee on the console will vary on the price of the console so those numbers will change. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above. They will not, however, take RROD 360 consoles. There may be stores that still do it, but official policy is to not take them in.

What is the difference between PowerUp Rewards and PowerUp Rewards Pro?
The basic card is free and only allows you to acrew points when spending money. The Pro card costs $14.99 and is basically the same as the previous EDGE program.

How much does a PowerUp Rewards Pro subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an PowerUp Rewards Pro card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game, extra 10% off the purchase of pre-owned games and 10% off new strategy guides.

Does the Power Up Rewards Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on. However, if you look at the wordings on promos, they can remove the bonus trade-in value if they decide to.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card. Some will report success, but this requires a manual override and is very YMMV.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

If I buy a used copy of a game that requires an online pass for multiplayer, will it come with an online pass?
If you purchase a used title published by either Sony or WB you get an online pass from GS on your receipt. That's also why the used copies are $55 instead of $48 when the MSRP is $60.
No GS issued passes of games published by EA, THQ, etc. On those titles you're totally dependent on the previous owner not using the code.

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards. Some kind of programming that gets input from their system that wont show up when only inputting the number off the back of the card.

Soul Silver got me a $24 base TIV. After promotion and PUR, rang up for $38.50. Puzzled me too, since I had been following the reported TIVs here.

I was really surprised at the Soul Silver TIV. Perhaps a YMMV kind of thing? I'm unloading my other ds games, namely white and white 2. I'm curious at their TIV, so I'll report in an hour or two.
 
You guys are talking about reporting an employee who gave you MORE CREDIT than what you were expecting by taking advantage of a promo you failed or oblivious to do so yourself?


Sounds about as stupid as another customer i saw demanding cash instead of 50% extra store credit, then uses the cash to buy another game which he had to pull more money out of his wallet, when the store credit would have covered it in full.


You guys are ridiculous

I think the issue is initiating a purchase without their consent. On the buyer's receipt will show they purchased a game and the store had sold a game they possibly didn't even sell (or maybe they did I didn't really remember what the post said). Lots of legal issues there.

And i see no problem with the employee trashing it because 9 times out of 10 the poster would have done the same, or do you perhaps believed he would have enjoyed playing madden 95?

The only way I see this being a problem from a customer point of view is if the 3 for 10 promo gave him more credit than the 50%

^ This guy is correct. Although is a moot point unless purchaser decides to do something about it which doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

The same issue can be brought up with their "resurfacing fees" which they don't tell you about, and you only see on your receipt after you leave. They are not 'reductions' to trade values, rather they are viewed in the system as separate purchases. Also highly questionable from a legal standpoint.
 
I actually didn't trash my receipt. It's in my wallet right now, just as a reminder for me.

And he rang up the Xbox 360 version. I assume they just keep the little barcode on their counter to scan and get someone more credit IF they consent to preordering a game, so the cashier gets their "quota" for the month.

I never got a copy of Madden 08, it just shows up on my receipt. I should've gotten $38 with the 3/$10 promo, but the guy never even gave me that amount. He made it seem like I was only going to get $30 (which is false because my trades only equaled $28 before any promo, and i am not PUR) UNLESS I preordered a game, after which I miraculously would get $42 in credit.

But see,he never told me I'd get $42...he only scanned the madden barcode AFTER I preordered Last of Us. I pieced everything together once I looked at my receipt. $42 credit - $5 deposit - $0.99 Madden left me with $36.01 on card.

In the end, it was him just saying without words "if you preorder a game, I'll shadily scan this barcode saying you "purchased" Madden to get the 50% bonus promo, otherwise you're only getting $30 back.."

Everyone talks shit about gamestop employee yet when they tell there story they seem scared to approach or tell the employee he mestup. Well I only realize it after I checked my receipt when I left, but I was in a rush to meet a friend for lunch, so I didn't want to go back in. Honestly, it didn't really bother me, since I got more credit than is hoped for, and I can always put that $5 deposit back onto my card if I want to buy something.

Only reason I would even think about reporting it would be in hopes GS would send me a 50% off coupon or somethin for free haha

Yeah he saved them money by having them preorder a game that means they might have to spend even MORE money. Great deal. Luckily he's a CAGer and will probably just end up cancelling the preorder later, but any "normal" person would have just bought the damn thing and then paid retail for a game that could probably be had with $20 off in Best Buy reward certs or other such promo.

Psssh. The manager of one GameStop screwed me out of my credit and when I complained he almost kicked me out of the store. I complained to corporate and the district manager was just like "yeah whatever" as if he's all buddy buddy with the manager at that one store.

There's something strange going on with that SJD guy's trade-ins. Look at his PUR bonuses. It just doesn't add up. Shadow Dragon should only be $14 base and Pokemon Soul Silver should definitely only be $20 base.

I bought another Soul Silver in that same transaction, rang me up for 23.19 after coupon and PUR + tax. And yes, I've made a lot of gs credit thanks to these over the top TIVs. (Soul Silver had a sticker for 29.99, other copies where 34.99) Only bad thing is they don't have is the ability to buy amazon credit. Not complaining though. Once I trade SS in, I'll have enough for a Vita.

By looking at his receipt pic I think I figured it out.

Not sure if it is a computer glitch, manual edit, unadversied/local promo, or something else but he appears to have gotten bonuses on base values that are already inflated by about 20%

See examples below (with some math steps skipped):

Pokemon White Version 2
Base TIV on GS website $15 * 1.2 = $18 Base TIV on his receipt

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
Base TIV on GS website $14 * 1.2 = $16.80 Base TIV on his receipt (actually it was 16.75)

I am willing to bet that the true base TIV for Ace Wright is $3.50 as opposed to 4.20 or 4.25

My best guess is that he was using 20% BDay coupon and the employee messed up big time by both increasing his base TIV by 20% and applying the coupon twice to the Pokemon: SS game he bought

Purchase Example:
Pokemon: SS
Used 39.99 - $16 (40% = 20% BD coupon x2) = 23.99
23.99 - 2.40 (PUR 10% discount) = 21.59 which is exactly what he paid for that one.

I would say the $17 for 360. That is what it was yesterday.
 
Both SR3 were phone quotes, so it is hard to say where the miscommunication was. Once someone trades one in today, we should be able to sort out which platform is trading in for $15 and which is $17

Rather than posting a link that may not work I will explain how to get there:

1. From main site click "Trade Offers" in the red section of the navigation bar
2. Now click on the red tag-like banner that says "Check Out Our Featured Trade Values"
3. Deduct $3.34 from values in left column to get current base price

4. Finally, the website is not always very good about updating so the base prices shown there are not fully guaranteed

Makes sense, but yesterday I went and the same thing happened. Also, I was so tired I forgot to use the birthday coupon on Borderlands 2 (complete fail, bear with me). Also on Soul Silver, as I said, I selected a copy with a 29.99 sticker while other SS copies were marked for 34.99. They mislabel products very frequently, so I saw no harm in buying a SS copy and doling it out later for $38.50 (in my case). Gamestop should be abused considering their used games market is one very unfair to gamers, all in all. I was very much against trading anything at all, but doing the math and seeing I could recoup or get more money for games I no longer played was too tempting. I'll keep reporting my findings, especially how it goes trading my second SS copy later today.

Pokemon Soul Silver should be selling for $39.99 used, but I agree, if they forget ti update the price you should get it for the price marked.

Please DO NOT report anything as all you're doing is confusing people. There's something weird going on with you/your stores/whatever that is not the norm.

ETA: If you want to report something report the store this is happening at so others in your area can experience the same.

It should be in Gamestop's policy that they should be honoring labeled pricing if it comes up lower than what the computer says. It's how I scored Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for $19.99 rather than $24.99 a few months back. I never had a case where they refused to give me the lower price.

I think the fine print says something like "subject to change at any time".

Also, I looked at the page just now, they seem to have removed the part where they said "Up To", and in the fine print explained that they applied $3.34 to the value to account for the 3/$10 promotion, so subtract the $3.34 from the value they provide and you get the actual trade-in amount.
