FAQ
Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Arkansas, California, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has PSP/DS values.

TIV as of 2/4/10 (All base values listed)

:ps3:
Heavenly Sword - $8.00

:360:
Tom Clancy's HAWX - $6.00
Mirror's Edge - $5.50
Ninja Gaiden 2 - $5.75
Fallout 3 - $6.25
Fallout 3 Operation Anchorage & The Pitt - $7.25
Star Ocean: The Last Hope - $13.75
Darksiders - $24
Cabela's Outdoor Adventure - $7.50
Prototype - $7.25
Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires - $8.00

I used 4/$25 and 7/$50 with the EDGE card and I walked away with $184.22, not too bad especially because I got Darksiders for $20, Cabela's for free and other ones were just dirt cheap when I bought them anyways. Funny though that the Fallout 3 DLC is worth more than the game itself!
If i buy me2 used it comes with 2 disks right?
just keep in mind that you need to add an extra $15 to a used purchase if you want the Cerebus Network

Followup on the OK sales tax thing. I went through all my 'paid in full w/ credit' receipts and I had to pay sales tax every time. So, in NE OK at least, you do have to pay sales tax on credit purchases.

Dragon Age:22.25
Far Cry 2:6.75
Borderlands: 24.75

PS3
Bioshock: 6.75
Ratchet & Clank: Crack in Time: 20.25

Got Destroy All Humans 3 at BB for 14.99, and got 20.08 after bonuses, so if you're looking for a 7th title for flippage, thats a decent return.

Just got back. 2/5/10

Wii:
Mario Party 8 - $15.00
Mario Kart Wii (game only) - $18.25

Ninja Gaiden 2 - $5.75

Got $134.46 out of all this. What a pleasant surprise!

2/5

Wii

Ghost Squad - $5.25
Conduit - $6

Conduit is very quickly dropping... a $1.50 drop in the span of a week. I would recommend trading them in ASAP if you want to dump it.

More Trades (14 more!)

Wii:
Mario Kart Wii - $18.25
Super Paper Mario - $9.00
Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles - $15.00
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games - $11.00
Sonic Riders Zero Gravity - $5.25

PS3:
The Orange Box - $6.50
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune - $9.50

Xbox 360
Armored Core: For Answer - $7.00
Fallout 3 - $6.25
Left 4 Dead - $7.00
Prototype - $7.25
Darksiders - $24.00

At least I got $255 for all of this. Bioshock 2 LE is now paid off.

Does anyone else on here love collecting games? I'm too much of a collector, I kept 12/14 boxes...Figured instead of trying to find them cheap and complete, I could just be fine finding the disc cheap.. (I played through most of these though.)

Can someone confirm when you do the console trade in, does the $30 HW bonus applied by the computer itself (after hitting total) or I need to tell him about the promo?

and two question I haven't seen answered on jp's FAQ yet:

1. Do they allow mutiple same system (hardware) trade in? and will the promo apply to each one? ($30 bonus for each console)
2. What if the console I wanted to trade in toward isn't in stock?(Like the Wii) would I just get the credits + bonus credits on the EDGE card?

I'd like to know this as well.

1) The way it has worked in past promotions that used get this much extra when trading in towards this, you had to have another qualifying item. So to get a promo to go twice, to trade in two systems and get $30, you would need to buy two new systems. I can't confirm that is how it works on this promo but that is how it has worked in the past with similar promos.
2) That wont work because the promo wouldn't be activated until the system sees that you are buying a console that qualifies. Basically both the trade and the system purchase has to be on the same transaction before the promo activates on their computers.

I can confirm that you will not get a bonus trading in two consoles for one new one. The first console you trade in will get the bonus and the other one will get the shaft.

Also, the promo will trigger automatically when the clerk hits total granted that you have a qualifying console to trade in and new system on the receipt.

Sign behind counter said $22 base. Surprised it was so low for a new game, considering they had no used copies anywhere in my city at the time.

Will they take a 360 that is in working condition but was opened. It was out of warranty already so I had to open it to clean all the dust out.

YMMV on this. Took Dead Space PS3, Army of Two 360, Tiger Woods 09 360, & Call of Duty WoW 360 in there today and even though all traded above $5 without EDGE$ I was told Dead Space nor CoD qualified for the promo. I took my games and left. Amazon is easier. Trade in values might be lower, but the games are almost always cheaper and no tax.

The only way it wouldn't have qualified is if the manager has put a local block out on them. The promotion is automatic in the computer, but the manager can override any trade-in. Since people have traded in some of those games in the past day or two I'd say someone at your local store sucks.

Appreciate you taking the time to respond. You do a good great job in this thread. The guy was shocked when I told him to cancel the transaction. This was the Westland Mall, MI location as a heads up for other CAGS.

Yes as long as it works. The guy will tested by putting the game in to see if it plays.

Few days ago, I traded in my 360. Mines was banned, modded and just too old (launch model) and not to mentioned the back was pretty nasty with all that screwdriver marks all over it since I opened it so much. I xclamp'd it around 5 times and reflow/reheat it for as much as 10 times. The guy tested the game before taking it in and gave me 80+30 HW bonus = 110 and I just use that plus the credit I saved up from the old 50% trade in promo to use toward another 360 arcade.

Only thing I'm debating right now is should I go and return the 360(still sealed), and get my credit back then rebuy the arcade which gives me that extra $25 gift card. Anyone else think this might work?

I always try to help out when I can. You definitely did the right thing though by taking your games back. If you aren't getting what you expect always cancel the transaction. I do think they have to hit total for the promos to show up, but you did the right thing.

As long as it is still sealed and you have your receipt, they really can't say much about you returning it. Unopened products have a 30 day return. Then you rebuy and you should get the gift card.

gamestop is giving really shitty trade in values nowadays and so are alot of other places. Luckily, I got about $32 for borderlands ps3 game @ gs with that trade in towards bioshock 2 while tru was only offering $15. It seems like games depreciate in value quick and thus, trade in values go down dramatically. Ah man, I saw army of two 40th day for $39.99 today @ kmart and it just came out not too long ago. Honestly, not many good games coming out nowadays so just wait for them to price drop, go on clearance or a sale where you get a gift card because no game has been worth regular retail price in a long time.
I can confirm that Red Faction Guerrilla for the PS3 also collapsed to $4 today.
Sonofabitch. That was one of the ones I was going to use, assuming I could find another 1-2 games to make it to the 7 for the $50 bonus bump.

They'll take $25 off the price of the Arcade and charge you the $25 for the gift card. That's how they got around people trying to buy a 360 Pro during their $50 gift card deal, returning the 360 and keeping the $50 gift card.

I really can't say I blame them, since at one point I probably would've tried that little 'trick'.

Oh and prepare yourself for people flaming you for trading in shoddy hardware that they'll end up reselling to someone else.
