FAQ
These trade-in values are really low!
While that may be true, if you combine the games with the right promotion they can work to your advantage. There are knowledgeable people in this thread that are normally willing to help.

Can I trade-in sealed games?
No. You might come across the rare GameStop that would let you do it, but they are going to open them anyway.

Do trade-ins have to have their original case, insert and manual?
No, however it will be YMMV on if they charge you a refurbish fee for them in that condition. Most GameStops wont charge a fee but there are some that charge for incomplete games.

Will they accept my game if it is really beat up?
YMMV. It really all depends upon the employee you get. Some will charge refurbish fees, some wont, some wont accept the game and others just take them without a second glance.

I have a Collector's/Limited/Special edition of a game, do I have to trade-in all of the extras?
No, but there are a handful of games that their variations have separate listings at GameStop: Madden 09 Anniversary Edition, Battlefield: Bad Company Gold Edition, and a few others.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
YMMV. The official policy is no, but there are some GameStops that overlook that rule.

What all do I have to trade in for a console trade-in?
Xbox 360: Console Unit, power brick, A/V Cables, Controller (wired/wireless)
Wii: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cables, Wiimote, Nunchuck, Sensor Bar
Playstation 3: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller, USB Cable
Playstation 2: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller (Must be a DualShock2)
GameCube: Console Unit, Power Cable, A/V Cable, Controller
PSP: Handheld, A/C Adapter
Nintendo DS/DSLite/DSi: Handheld, A/C Adapter, Stylus

Can I trade in a defective/broken console?
For the most part yes. If it powers on but doesn't play games, they will take the console as a refurb unit and cut the trade-in value in half. You are still required to trade in everything required listed in the question directly above.

How much does an EDGE card subscription cost?
It costs $14.99 and is good for a year. It also comes with a 1-year subscription to Game Informer magazine.

What bonuses come with having an EDGE card?
You will get an extra 10% trade-in credit on the base value of the game and an extra 10% off the purchase of used games.

Does the EDGE Card give me a bonus on hardware trade-ins?
No. You will only get the bonus for games and accessories.

What if I want cash instead of credit, what do they deduct?
If you decide that you want cash instead of credit, they will take 20% off the base values and promos will not apply.

Does promo "....." have a minimum trade-in value?
If the promo has a minimum trade-in value requirement, it will be listed in the promo. If it isn't there, then there is no limit. However, as with all trades, they are subject to manager approval so the manager could have setup his own little rule-set requiring a minimum of whatever.

I used a Power Trade promo for a pre-order, can I cancel that pre-order and get the credit or move it to another game I want?
Yes on both accounts. However, if you do a bunch of the power trades and just straight drop the pre-order you could create some ill-will between yourself and the employees you cancel on.

I just tried to use a promo that has a select list of games eligible, but they say my game isn't eligible anymore, what gives?
Basically they have the right to change the eligible games at any time. They tend to update these frequently so as to lock out any easy/cheap games. It's best to check the eligible list the day of your trade.

Can I stack two different trade-in promos?
No. The only thing that will stack with trade-ins is your EDGE card.

If I pay for an item using all credit on my card, do I have to pay sales tax?
This varies depending upon the state you live in.

What states charge sales tax on purchases made with credit and which ones don't?
Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arkansas, California, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania,
Does Not Charge Sales Tax on Credit Purchases:Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia,

My state doesn't charge sales tax on purchases made by credit, why is gamestop.com charging me tax?
It is just the way they have designed their system. The best theory we have seen is that since you are only inputting the number off of the back of the card, it isn't going to pick up the programming from the specially tagged EDGE cards.

First post contains promo information and the FAQ. Second post has the 360/Wii/PS3 values. Third post has the PS2/GC values. Fourth post has PSP/DS values.

Ok, stop at ebgames today and got heavy rain and a used copy of mass effect 2. Traded mass effect 2 for $48 at other store and returned heavy rain at the other store. ( I know lots of traveling ) When returned heavy rain, the guy at the register look at the reciept for 5 minutes, then proceeds to "Opens" the game. I was like WTF?! In my head, as he says, " I have to open it because I don't want be ripped off if there's no disc." And I still have the WTF?! in my head still.

I asked the other guy in store how many times has this happens. And he says, " Not a lot. But it's 'Store policy' so he has to do it." And I'm still puzzled. This is my first flip at gamestop and I always have gone there for years. In the end he gave me credit back but on a New edge card (WTF?). Can anyone see any logic in this?
Any idea why they won't accept those? I have a bunch of PS2 games to trade in and they might not accept them.
Most likely (ps2 games) were damaged and the refurb fee would be more than the credit gained from trading them in.

They sell gutted copies as "new" all the time so I'm sure they will do the same with the New game you returned.

If someone buys a new game, opens it takes the game out of the case then reseals it. I mean that plastic coding isn't that hard to put on if you have the right equipment.

Then later on if someone else buys it opens goes home opens it up and it has no disc who are you going to believe? that new game had no disc or thinking the person talking out of his ass?

Just got back from my local GameStop and the tiv on Mass Effect 2 was still $35, so I got $56 again. I don't know if my store is slow to change the price or what but it might be worth checking into to see if it is still at $35 as I know it has been reported at $30 today.

Some of the stores that are having computer problems or might have had a transmission error last night sometimes don't get the updates rolled out. If you are in the Evansville area then it was because the mall GameStop's internet connection went down, again, and had to resort to dial up.

Actually they were in mint condition with case and manual. They scanned in as having a $0.01 TIV which I was told were not accepted for trade.

Man, I love CAG. JP, your OP is wondrous, and because of it I decided to trade in more than I was originally expecting; hoping to clean up on the next B2G1. :D

Here are my base values from this afternoon:

:360:
Prince of Persia - $3
Chatpad - $6 (up from $5)
Wired headset - $6.25 (up from $5.25)

DS:
Professor Layton & the Curious Village - $15
Professor Layton & the Diabolical Box - $15
Contra 4 - $5

GBA:
Metroid Fusion - $2
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 - $1
Advance Wars 1 - $0.60 :whistle2:(
Super Mario Bros. (classic NES) - $9.75

They couldn't take my DS rumble pak because "It would only get you 10 cents." :whistle2:( But otherwise I racked up $95, which the employee ringing me up was really surprised with. Now I'm totally stocked up for the next B2G1, so briiiiiiiiing on Game Days!

Cool so I guess I got lucky, when I got home today I had a used copy of ME2 in the mail that I ordered from them last week for like $40. I figured I would trade it in now and buy another whenever they have a B2g1. This brings my credit to $320 now, most of which I got yesterday and today. I was in the Johnstown, NY area btw.

I understand that, but why did I get another edge card with credit on it?

Your right about that, but I bought it at the same store that I've going for 10+ years. I felt like I was treated like a low life criminal, when he said that he didn't what to be ripped off.

to be fair, buying a brand new game and returning it soon after can be seen as shady. i worked at retail and now it happened a few times.

Base TIV's
Both Xbox 360
Chronicles of Riddick: AoDA $4.75
CSI: Hard Evidence $8.50

With promo and Edge $21.21, was able to pick up World of Outlaws: Sprint Cars

Can't post TiVs yet, but I gotta say, damn. I traded in about 10-15 games, and got about $140. I figured it up earlier, and had $108. Thing is, i left about 5 games here, so it should be about $50 extra. I need to go back >.>
Other than recently released games, all the values are still shit. Don't really understand the excitement.
then you go and take the extra time and hassle trading somewhere else to make a few extra bucks.

Well I guess I'm horrible at flipping then.

I understand that, but why did I get another edge card with credit on it?

i've had that happen to me too. i dont know why but their system for some reason wont let them put it on the edge card. at least thats what the guy told me. it doesnt really matter to me but i dont want to have too many cards. i like to keep 3 cards with a few hundred on each one in case i lose one of them everything wont be gone.

not sure if anyone can check into this. but with the free shipping form gamefly deal going on there can be some good flips. Marvel Allaince 2. seels for 16.99 with tax. and trades at GS for 15 that be about 6 dollar flip with your edge card. also blaublze sells 17.99 and trades for 15 about a 5 dollar flip finally call of juraez bib sell 9.99 trade for 10 about 5 dollar flip.

if someone can comfirm these games trade in vaules i might what to try this thank you.

Mario Kart DS - $20.00
Mario Hoops 3 on 3 - $6.00
Animal Crossing DS - $6.75
Left 4 Dead 2 - $29.75
Borderlands - $23.75

After bonus w/ edge - $138.03

This is such an awesome deal, haha. I got more than I paid for on both L4D2 and Borderlands, and I can't believe Mario Kart for $32 after bonuses. Awesome.

Has that guy been working there for 10+ years? does he know you on a face/name basis?

If not then it pretty easy for him not to know who you were or if this is normal process.

Some people follow the same process no matter who the customer is, because it their job on the line if they screw up and have an anal Manager.

Unloaded a couple of more old games.

TIVs (Base):

Soul Calibur 2 (GCN) $2.50
Mega Man X Command Mission (GCN) $0.70
Soul Calibur 3 (PS2) $3.00
Army Men RTS (GCN) $2.00
Moto GP 3 (PS2) $0.65

Oh he's been there for about 4 years and he knows me for a while. He's a borderline fuck ing ass hole.
Today gets better and better, my used Mass Effect 2 that I flipped today had an unused Cerberus card in it.
I just redeemed the code on ME2.com and it said activation successful or something like that.
I meant it as a good thing, after reading what I wrote it sounds like I am pissed that I traded it in with the Cerberus card, but I took it out before trading it.

I only traded in borderlands because I just don't have time for it and I know I won't for quite some time so I'm trading it in for almost $40 now and have every intention of picking it back up again some day when it's cheaper. To me it makes sense rather than having a copy I won't play till summer just depreciate in value.

They buy games for

The Saboteur (PS3)- $14.50 (I don't know how it was only $14.50 when the game is still $60.) +50% + Edge = $23.20
God of War (PS2)- $2 +50% + Edge= $3.20
F.E.A.R. (PS3)- $3.50 + 50% + Edge= $5.60

Total= $32

Bought Dark Void for $8 using my Edge Card money.
Now my Edge = $0

Nintendo just announced today that the DSi XL will release March 28th anybody think that GS will let us use the $30 bonus toward a pre-purchase of that. I passed on the DSi when it released but the XL is seriously huge I think i'll have to bite. Maybe they'll have a nice special promo for that though.

It has been a new and large problem of people stripping games from cases and returning them. I won't provide details but it can be done in 20 seconds very easily.

Is Conduit worth getting? I was thinking of getting it real soon, it looks really good to me.

I definitely took advantage of this promotion by trading in:
-Mario Kart Ds for $32, after Edge and promo.
-MW2 :ps3:, cant stand it anymore online :bomb:
-SotC - $10.40 after Edge and promo.
-KH - $6.79 after Edge and promo.
-R.A.D.(Robot Alchemic Drive) - $1.60 after Edge and promo., $1.00 before
-Raiden III - $0.65 before, $1.03 after
-Splinter Cell :ps2: - $0.90 before, $1.44 after
-Advance Wars: Days of Ruin - $2.00 before, $3.20 after

The employee had the nerve to charge me $0.75 for I suppose not taking care of my games, I can assure I do take care very well of them. But w/e it's not worth arguing with them. Paid off for BF:BC2 :ps3: and left.
