GTA heading to Wii

One of the greatest selling franchises in video gaming history is heading straight to the Nintendo Wii. Random Newz has word from an inside source. They claim one of the employees of Rockstar (The creator of Grand Theft Auto) has told them some juicy information.
Nintendic is categorizing this as a rumor for now, but the site seems to be confident with their source.
This is straight from a dev source within Rockstar. The Wii will be getting a port of GTA from the past titles that have hit the PS2. It looks like Reggie has struck gold and Nintendo can finally shed some of that “kiddie” image from the past.
Check back for more details in the next couple of days.
It finally looks that Reggie got his wish. Maybe this news will make the Wii more appetizing to the hardcore crowd as at current time, Nintendo arguably looks too kid-friendly to some people. Everyone knows that GTA is a console seller. Whether in the past it was for Sony, or currently it’s for Microsoft; GTA makes people want to play.

This news will no doubt make its way around the internets and get people a little more excited about the Wii (Not that the Nintendo needs any help right now selling their new product). The Wii will be the only console where you can play all Nintendo first party exclusives such as Mario Party 8, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and Grand Theft Auto all on the same system, and that’s a pretty big deal to some people who haven’t and will not buy more than one console.

Personally I'm weary of even putting this up here but I think I may as well get it out that apparently the GTA games on the Wii will be ports. Hmmm.... Still letting everyone know ahead of time that this could be bullshit.

If they port anything other than Vice City Stories...hell, if they even port that. fuck your ports, I'm not buying them.

Such a *massive* letdown for a franchise Reggie has been very publicly courting.

EDIT: Yes, GTA sells consoles; however, the franchise isn't doing amazing things for the PSP, and those aren't even ports. Let me be quite clear: nobody is going to buy a brand new system because Grand Theft Auto (III, VC, or SA) is on it. Thanks for nothing, assholes.

I'd be interested to see how they adapt them to the Wii. Who knows, if they do sell well, which they probably will for most people, then I'd hope for an actual brand new individual game or spin-off of the series.
Might pick it up. I haven't played a GTA since #2, but I don't exactly have a hankering to pick up a 3D version any time soon. Unless we get a significant number of games in one package or a seriously reduced price, I'll probably just ignore this.
there is the double pack with GTA III and vice city for like $20. And last I heard they are making a triple pack with san andreas in it for $40. THis is on the ps2 and xbox though.

Actually, this reminds me of when Resident Evil went "exclusive" on the GameCube. They re-did the first one and all everyone could say was how it's redefining Nintendo's kiddie image. It didn't seem to sell that many more systems. People said that by that time, Resident Evil's time had pretty much come and gone and the series was winding down, anyway. Here we are five years later with GTA. Sound familiar?

And all we have here are ports of the original GTAs with some kooky Wiimote functionality, right? I'm guessig. I hope to see some all-new GTA game for the Wii, though, that'd be cool.

If they port SA, but have really awesome Wiimote functionality, I would buy it. Keyword on awesome there, if they pull a farcry, then I will not buy it and be fucking pissed.

It would be nice, but I think Rockstar either has to be in love with the Wiimote or the ports sell.
Honestly if this did come out on the Wii, I wouldn't buy it.

It's not what I bought my Wii for.
Bingo.

First a port of Two Thrones and now a port of GTA. Nintendo really should do something about this. Soon every company will start thinking a port of an older game will be ok for the Wii.

not interested in rehashing those games anymore if they wanna be onto something how about an exsclusive gta game for the wii in a new city.

Id buy for that.

Meh, I was mildly amused by GTA III and I'm still trying to convince myself to play GTA VC, San Andreas and Liberty City Stories even though I bought them centuries ago....

just seems a bit unnecessary for everyone involved. the wii-only households are usually a younger demographic, and anyone with other systems would most likely buy it on them instead. that, and japan has little interest in the franchise, which removes a huge chunk of the installed base. we'll see though, i wouldn't count it out entirely.

the mainstream market is completely different from the people who visit cag.

like someone said earlier, unless its vice city stories i dont care. ive played gta, ive enjoyed gta, but i have no desire to rebuy an old game with some new lame control scheme.

honestly, i dont think gta is realistic for the wii, not because people wouldnt buy it, but rockstar is developing gta for next gen consoles, and porting that to the wii is just unrealistic. the wii isnt part of the "next gen" and this is a consequence of that. not that i mind,

in any case, unless rockstar takes the time to build a gta from the ground up for the wii, then i really have no interest in buying a gta for the wii.

I want Lucasarts to announce an Indiana Jones game already. Just think of using the Wii Nunchuck as whip. Hell, I don't care if they announce a port of an older Indiana Jones game, just as long as we get it.

what? i wasn't talking about CAG specifically, i was just commenting on the gaming populace in general.

My miscommunication. I was saying that this go round, it isn't just the kiddies that are getting the Wii.

I bought Wii for Zelda: TTP & couple exclusive titles from Nintendo. As for myself GTA is average action title (i am not huge GTA), at least i got all of them on PS2 version & GTA double pack at Target clerance for $7.48. No way i buy Old GTA games already released on PS2/XBOX unless GTA 4 or new sequel.

This will just turn into one of those publisher self-fulfilling prophecies. "Hey, no one bought our port of a 5 year old game that anyone who really cared about has already played. I guess these types of mature games won't sell on Wii, good thing we found out before putting a lot of money into it!"

Good point.

This sounds totally unverified anyway. It's "unreliable news source 12-c heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend's uncle!!!"

I always thought it was weird the Gamecube didn't get a port back in the day. That would have helped them back then.

I don't care either way, as I dislike the games. Unlike the shameless clones, GTA at least has a sense of humor about it and knows what it is, but it's still kind of vile to me.

The best put together was Liberty City Stories on the PSP (haven't played the second one yet), but even though the gameplay was finally pretty functional, I just got turned off by it after a while. Quit after I was supposed to mow down a priest or something.

I don't want to play the bad guy. (Liberty City Stories is still a million times more appealing than the completely thuggish rip-off Saint's Row though.)

You know, since this is a rumor from a developer I'm going to assume that the GTA part is correct, but that the direct port thing is far from settle.

GTA Advance was supposed to be a port of GTA3 (in top down view), but Rockstar wisely changed the story after the basic engine was laid down. I doubt they would shoot themselves in the foot just to waste money.

If a game does materialize on the Wii it will either be a compilation like Metal Slug or a new story based on a modified GTA3 engine.

Heck yeah, I'm going to get it. I tried playing them on the Playstation, but I just couldn't get into the Playstations controller. I dont mean to bash the system, but the controller was difficult for me.

Oh, and I'd wish they'd port Bully over. That looks like an interesting game.

Good point. Could be a "Stories" like game where it uses a lot of the same assets, but has a new story, and maybe some Wii specific stuff thrown in.

It's not the controller, the earlier GTA games had hideous on-foot control. Liberty City Stories has massively improved control, making it almost average :D
i'm buying it! killing hookers is fun.........
Can you imagine killing hookers? Bludgening them to death with a bat, and all the while you're making the motion with the wiimote? Amazing.

Also, does anyone else think that the release of a port is being used simply as a gauge of interest? Telling Rockstar whether or not it's worth it to develop a Wii-specific GTA game?

A port? fuck that...

I'm glad GTA is coming to the Wii but come on, they have enough money to make an original title.

That might cause a little bit to much controversy for even Rockstar to handle.

FTW. I'd be mildly interested in something built from the ground up for Wii but that's it. I want an Xbox 360/PS3 graphically awesome GTA4 with the fucking controls fixed for once - especially the aiming. Hopefully nothing as big as SA.
