Guild Wars...is it any good?

I was thinking of picking this up, but I need a new video card to play it. Is it worth it to buy one just to play this? It looks awesome....oh, if anyone has/ knows about a cheap Radeon 9000+ or GeForce4 card for sale please, let me know.

It's not that bad. There's no monthly charge which is a plus. Graphics for it is decent. There's cpu people if you can't find someone to quest with.

I played it alot when I use to play it, but MMORPGs aren't really my thing. Now it just sits on my computer not being used.

It's ok, but you would need to devote a ton of time to get anywhere good... 3 games plus an expansion coming very soon all to set up Guild Wars 2 was too overwhelming for me.

Yes it is a good game, but I agree with Rufus: you'll want to get the expansions for the full (and real) experience, otherwise you'll pretty much be in the dust.

Yea... I think at this point, anyone who hasn't started playing it might as well wait for Guild Wars 2, unless they've got a good deal of money to burn and a lot of free time.

Well I think its pretty good, and as for it taking a lot of time...lets just say in the first game Prophecies, you can easily reach max level within a day. You would be missing out on all the side quests and a fair number of story missions, but if all you care about is reaching max level with the best gear, it can easily be done in a day.

As for Factions and Nightfall? Unless you're into PvP Factions was not very good IMO and Nightfall was only good due to it introducing Heroes (customizable AI henchmen that you can party with if you don't want to play with other people), but the henchmen that were available before heroes are more than capable of beating the game.

It is alright, as far as MMORPGs go it is not high at all. To compare it to others I would say it is in the middle. The worst thing about it are the instanced areas. You only meet people in towns which just makes it seem like a single player game with a multiplayer component. It also is boring, the story is alright. Nothing to get excited about.

The gameplay is alright. There is not variation in things you can do. You also only carry 8 skills around at any one time. You can have 80 skills but while you are out of town you can only use 8. This really sucks in my opinion.

I got tired of it fast, I have Factions and Prophicies. They are just so plain. They do not feel like MMORPGs.

The 8 skill thing is comparable to Magic the Gathering. You have to build a good "deck". The instanced thing is good IMO because you don't have to worry about people stealing your drops/killing all the monsters you're trying to kill/killing you when you're minding your own business.

I bought Guild Wars when it launched and played it steadily for about 3 months. Then once I beat most of the stuff in it I quit. I have actually been considering playing it again, I bought Factions but didn't play hardly any of it. I really liked it a lot. It was my 1st "MMORPG" and I really liked it. I can't bring myself to pay the monthly fees that MMO's requireso it was a great substitute. You can get GW and the expansions for cheap now so I highly recommend it. I wouldn't wait for Guild Wars 2, that game is well over 1 year away from being released. I say go for it and just buy Guild Wars now, I don't think you will regret it.

P.S. I think this game is one of those that is 10X better when you know people that play. Playing with friends on this game is sweet.

I have it as a casual game that I pick up and play again every few months. There are always a ton of low-level people and noobs so it's a good game to pick up and play for casual play.

I'm not big with MMORPG's and I don't believe in paying for such services (WoW, more) so I'm happy with what I have - the last time I created a powerful deity-level character was in an old text and ASCII based MUD/MUSH called Pandora's Box. I had HERO leveled Knights, Crusaders, Warlords, etc. I spent much of my free computer time there while in high school...

I see what you mean but I disagree. I like the WOW model better. You have several trees and you cannot excel in all at once but you basically get a whole tree or two of skills for that character and then you mix and match by choosing. You can redistribute skills by paying but at some point it becomes way too expensive and you have to decide.

Here is my example of why the 8 skill thing is not so good. I am mainly a necromancer, and I like summoning minions a lot. But if I want to summon minions I have to not include my skills that do damage. So in many instances I am unable to perform properly unless my team is killing enough people. But somethimes they can't becuase I they need the damage that I am supposed to be providing.

The points you make about item stealing and mob killing are all true. The item thing is not that important though, most games tie the item to the person who killed the monster. But I still would like people wandering about. The world just feels so empty. And I never really had the problems you mentioned to such an extent where I wished I was alone with NPCs. It just feels bleak.

Another reason I do not like GW is becuase to get the end game stuff you need an incredible amount of money and resources. You are basically left grinding. Oh, and to just buy the end games stuff you have to run a large lenghty mission with 7 people just to get to the vendor. I am talking about Factions, BTW. I am left with nothing to do except run about and get money. In most MMOs you spend long amounts of time leveling up to the next level but in this game and in Factions more then in Prophecies you level up so fast that you are left with nothing to do. Every body is level 20, and skill points do not matter much at all. I have a couple of nice elite skills but they are not that much better than regular skills. And there are not that many skills I want anyhow. I have over 50 skill points left with nothing to spend them on. Experience is just annoying, becuase I know that I am not using it toward anything.
