I bought the gf GH3 for the ps3 for xmas, and I bought her the Encore Rock the 80's as well for ps2.

But the wireless controller from the ps3 bundle wont work with the rock the 80's

Is there a patch on the way to fix it or do I have to buy her a seperate guitar?

I haven't kept up with this, but I don't think there is any way to play PS2 GH games on the PS3 with a guitar controller. There are some adapters, but I seem to remember that they are sketchy at best.
Currently as far as I know there is no way to play the ps2 guitar hero's on the ps3.
That's true. There was an old thread explaining this. If someone tries using the guitar for a PS2 guitar game, it isn't recognized. Part of this is because Activision/Red Octane wanted to protect the PS2 version from unlicensed guitars which used the traditional PS2 controller port (also made sure they did not work via USB so an un-licensed guitar could also not be made on PS2 using USB). It's a complicated situation.
So then whats the best route to go so she can play rock the 80's?

Get the ps3/ps2 adapter and get a third party guitar?
no, because when you use the third party adapter, there's still problems.. one, it wouldn't detect your guitar.. and two, if you get a wired guitar, there's still problems, it won't show the fret you're holding down on the screen.

Ok.. I purchased two. I have 1 wireless guitar and 1 wired guitar as well as both the games. Reading the instructions, I was said to see that the wammy bar does not work with GH2 (you have to use the select button.) Anyway it did not matter. Guitar Hero 2 does not work with it right anyway. First the Wireless guitar is not even reconized by the adaptor. Secondly, the fret buttons do not work hardly at all. What is the use. I verified that everything was set up correctly, it just did not work. The adaptor has a switch to take it from normal to GH2. So I flip the switch. The guitar came up in GH2 first guitar mode. When trying to play, the adaptor switch modes to second guitar. When I looked that instructions again, you change modes by holding a fret button and using strum. I do not know about you but when I am playing a game, I tend to do this, so BAD call on that one. Overall, since I can't even play GH2 with it, it is totally useless in my book. I am taking them back tomorrow.

also, hammer ons and pull offs do not work with the adapter.

So, unfortunately, your best option is to take the 80s edition back.

We already opened it though.. it was an xmas gift.. got it at best buy.. i dont think theyd allow us to take it back and give us store credit or anything.

I only have the Original guitar and it works great with the Pelican adapter. However, this is wired guitar, not wireless. There's an option on the adapter for GH2 wired controller, but I dont have that guitar so not sure if it works or not.
I just got GH3 game and will try it out tonight to see if it works with my GH wired guitar. I think it should as far as I know.

if they're smart they'll open the new game up and give it back to you so that you can't do this. at least thats what targhetto did when i was there.

Well, GH3 wont work using GH wired controller through Pelican PS2 adapter. Now I need to find a way to get rid of the game, if I can't find anything I like at GSl to exchange for. Craigslist here I come!
