Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
The Metal (by Tenacious D)
My Name is Jonas (by Weezer)
Knights of Cydonia (by Muse)
Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss)
School's Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper)
Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat
Cult of Personality (by Living Colour)
Barracuda (as made famous by Heart)

Notice the lack of "as made famous by" for most of them. This is going to be sweet.

paint it black and my name is jonas FTW.

Living Colour is an amazing surprise, and Paint it Black is easily one of the best Stones songs to want to include in a GH game. So far, so good. I'm ready to sell my 360 version and play my PS2 versions instead using the GH3 controller (for PS3).

Yes. Those two songs make this an easy release day purchase for me!

There will be a "new button color design" as well. fucking ASSHOLES. Can't just let people buy the game, you have to make sure everyone is forced to buy the guitar again as well.

Well forget that, I'll just deal with it. Don't need wireless and I'm sure not paying for it just because the orange button is now the second fret or whatever.

Not exactly a thrilling lineup so far but it's pretty diverse at least, and the amount of original tracks is encouraging. First person to try to tell us that Tenacious D rules gets pantsed and hung upside-down from the flagpole until your taste in music is corrected.

That fucking sucks.

I'm sure as hell not buying another guitar again just for GH 3, when the guitar I have now works for GH 1, 2, and the upcoming 80's expansion.

Surprised the Muse is in it, now it's defintely a must buy purchase for me. This is shaping up to be a damn good songlist. Now I just need to get a PS3...

Isn't this also coming out on PS2?

Are you fucking kidding me? Seriously? It take a long time to recognize the colors on the screen and where your fingers should be - you know, like learning an instrument - and they are screwing with it? I don't give a shit about spending $30 extra to get the wireless guitar but I do care about having to retrain my brain. Whose stupid ass idea was this? If they want to make sure everyone buys the guitar again just dont sell the game separately or add something to make it unique to GHIII but don't fuck with the core gameplay. Douchebags.

That list is incredibly awesome for me. I love most of those songs. The only one I'm not familiar with is Knights of Cydonia.

I hope that they're able to keep a lid on the "surprise" songs this time. Freebird would have been an incredible surprise/bonus for the GH2 if it hadn't been leaked so early, which just led to people being disppointed that there wasn't a big surprise of Maiden or Metallica once it launched.

Seems like they could easily give users the option of which fret button color scheme to use in the game, if they so choose (assuming this rumor is true).

This is not the greatest game in the world, this is just a Tribute.

:D

Loving the track list thus far. I hope the rest stays this strong.
Not exactly a thrilling lineup
Y'know, with songs like:

Paint It Black (by The Rolling Stones)
Cherub Rock (by Smashing Pumpkins)
Sabotage (by Beastie Boys)
The Metal (by Tenacious D)
My Name is Jonas (by Weezer)
Knights of Cydonia (by Muse)
Rock And Roll All Nite (as made famous by Kiss)
School's Out (as made famous by Alice Cooper)
Slow Ride (as made famous by Fog Hat
Cult of Personality (by Living Colour)
Barracuda (as made famous by Heart)

...only the Tenacious D song and the Muse song seem to fall into the "lame for Guitar Hero" category (and only the Muse song b/c I don't know it. I don't see how you get off trying to start some sort of "musical taste" banter (even if we agree that Tenacious D is like Spinal Tap without the good) when you dare claim that the Stones, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Kiss, Alice fucking Cooper, Foghat (face it, you do wanna play Slow Ride), Living Colour, and Heart is "not exactly thrilling."

What in the world would be thrilling? Somea'them Peppermint Patty-haired motherfuckers singin' their drippy-eyeliner inspired "woe is me" contemporary wanker songs? More Fall Out Boy? Is that what you want?

Shit. By the way, let me officially declare that this game needs L7's "Pretend We're Dead." A *lot*.

I seriously need new pants

I am also lead to believe that the Rolling Stones, Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, Weezer and Muse song are by the original artists?

That's what it looks like to me. If they were covers you would think they would have the "as made famous by" language tagged to it.

I'm hoping by GH5 we don't have to endure any covers - I appreciate the talent the guys have in recording such accurate covers (for the most part) but getting your original song in the newest GH would seem like easy money for any band and record label.

I actually agree with you on this.

More metal is needed: Metallica, more Iron Maiden, and I know this is probably never going to happen, but how about some Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates? And Cradle of Filth. I would *kill* for some CoF.

Also, Faith No More. Those are the bands I would love to see on GH III.

Something else taken from the press release:

Gibson Guitar's Les Paul model will be the battle axe of choice, and an industry standard for all rock gods on the Xbox 360(TM), PLAYSTATION(R)3 system, and Wii(TM). After much anticipation, PlayStation(R)2 system fans will also be receiving a new exclusive shape as well, the classic Kramer guitar, also a Gibson brand, popularized by hard rockers and known for its body design, pickups, electronics, and construction for furious finger fretting.

So the Les Paul will be the next-gen guitars, and the Kramer will appear for the PS2. Dunno what a Kramer looks like, but I'll google image it.

I'm pretty much sold on the strength of that short list alone. I'm dying to see what else they've got lined up now

COOOME TO MAH WINDOOOOOOOOOW~

Just kidding, of course.

Wait a tic

There's also a "new button color design" to confuse anyone thinking about sticking to their old axe.
We're going to be FORCED to buy the new bundles?!

...well, with that list of songs, I'll do it.

They usually reveal the worst songs first..

..i'm really hoping they got Metallica on board. "Seek And Destroy" F T M F'N W.

It seems people need to download and listen to "Knights of Cydonia". Everyones task: Go download the song than come back here with your thoughts on why this song is going to be killer for this game.

Also that whole lineup is amazing so far.

OK, I need this RIGHT NOW. Holy crap, those are great song choices. If that's the teaser, I cannot wait to see what else they have coming down the pipeline. Makes up for what is, for me, a pretty lackluster 80's edition line-up.

God damn you, now I'm gonna have that fucking song stuck in my head all day!
Well, then, I *DEMAND* "Hot for Teacher."

Yes, Indeed. Hell, I'd settle for Panama.

Man, I was just calling for Living Colour in the GH 80s Edition thread. As long as I can play it in a GH game, I'm happy.

For those of you that don't think Tenacious D is a good fit for GH, just listem to "The Metal" and you'll realize it will be kick ass to play.

Forcing us to buy a new Guitar is totally bullshit, though. I'll probably be picking up GH3 for the Wii or maybe 360 (if I buy one this summer) so it may not be an issue for me - but it's still shit.

Jesus Christ.. Red Octane is getting as bad as EA in raping their customer base. First they let loose a bunch of buggy guitars and put out a patch that bricked consoles.. next they're going to tell them that the periphial is outdated. They're really milking this thing for all its worth... and they know people will pay for it.

At least the track list is getting better. Hopefully we'll see a Highway to Hell (Bon Scott version of course)... or even better, "Let There Be Rock" or "Whole Lotta Rosie." Anything with a good Angus solo would rule. And if there was ever a Stones song to have... they picked the right one.

Maybe by Guitar Hero XVIII they'll have made enough to talk Page/Plant into licensing a song (still doubtful it'll happen though :) ). They should also put any song from Beck's Sea Change on there to add to the depresive mood of having to fork over nearly $100 for each new version of the game.
The setlist needs more "Rocket Queen"
I like the way you think. Though any more GNR would be pretty fucking awesome. Especially if they could get the original recordings.

The new controller thing kinda sucks, but I don't mind too much since I'll probably get this for 360 and I didn't bother picking up GH2 for the 360 since I already have it for PS2 and don't like the current 360 controller. Part of me is hoping they'll offer a full size controller too. The SG for the PS2 has just started to feel too small to me when playing for any extended period of time.
the kramer looks like a big peppermint, heh
I don't really care how bad/good the guitar looks, i'm
looking at the screen anyway :)
That was just how Van Halen decorated his guitar. I don't think any other ones looked like that.
That was just how Van Halen decorated his guitar. I don't think any other ones looked like that.
Right. That was a custom paint job - note the "5150" on the end of it.

Any buzz I had when I entered this thread was instantly killed upon learning about the 'new button color scheme' rumor. It is depressing to see how many people are ready to eagerly acquiesce on Day One if that ends up being true. Not surprising, mind you, but depressing.

If it's true, then I'm passing on this* and lighting a candle for Guitar Hero to 'jump the shark' and veer off into the realm of 'passing fad' as opposed to 'Madden-esque institution'.** I'm sure to hear about my righteousness, as probably every other person reading this is, as Shawn Elliott (as "Whiskey Nerd") put it, a "man-baby" who jumps at the chance to rebuy and rebuy DS Lites when new candy colors are offered.

*--Maybe in late '08 when GH IV is released and I can get at least two games out of the price of one guitar--if that'll even be possible anymore--I'll reconsider. Maybe.

**--Scoff all you want, but you have no idea how the zeitgeist will go on this game in the long term. To me, it seems like a franchise that's ripe for the fickle public to turn on it two or three years from now, as it'll become something "that was so '00s". Maybe Rock Band will kick its ass. NO ONE KNOWS. Yet.

No. fuck you. I already own 2 guitars. I want to play GHIII, but they can lick my balls if they think I'm buying a 3rd guitar for it.

There had better be an option to use the old guitars. There's no reason for this change other than to bend the user base over and shove a Kramer up our collective ass. fuckin class act.

I think the idea is that you don't HAVE to buy the new guitar but when the button on screen is purple and you are supposed to press yellow on your old controller things will get confusing fast.

From the press release (courtesy Kotaku, at least for this post):

The exclusive Gibson guitars will include innovative features such as removable faceplates that will allow fans to later personalize their guitars and make it their own, and a new button color design that will be integrated for an even greater authentic feel and rock experience.

For me, that strongly implies that they've tweaked the core gameplay mechanic and control scheme just enough to mandate that you buy the new guitar if you want to play. I hate press releases, as corporatespeak always raises my blood pressure and gets the bile churning.

EDIT: jayeryh, please note it's "color design", not "color scheme". Kind of insidious wording, methinks. To me, it suggests that it's not just same buttons, cooler colors.

If I wanted you to buy a new guitar controller, I wouldn't just make the 1st fret purple (or whatever), I'd make it trigger a different button (X, A etc.).

I had not even been considering Rock Band before now because of the considerable investment I have already made in Guitar Hero (GH 1 bundle, GH 2 bundle - PS2, Red Octane wireless guitar, and GH 2 bundle - X360), but if I have to buy all new stuff just to play GH 3, it makes Rock Band much more appealing.
