IGN has a first look at Guitar Hero IV.

I for one am glad I decided to pass on Rock Band for this.

The new guitar looks sick!

And the new drum set is supposed to be the best one yet.

And thank the video games Gods - we've got DLC, but still waiting to see how it will work

You'll be able to save up to 100 songs of your own creation locally, upload five at a time (you're free to swap your favorites in and out of GH Tunes), and download up to 200 tracks others have created. Activision was quick to point out that the Wii version will have the same features as the PS3 and 360. You can create songs, upload them, download them, and purchase famous downloadable tracks on Wii.

It sounds better, but the DLC for Guitar Hero has been lackluster compared to the stuff Rock Band has been putting out. Hopefully, they'll step up and put out some better DLC.

GH gets bonus points for adding the character creator though, that's a feature that might sell this to me over RB.

The touch sensitive neck on the guitar looks interesting as well, and the fact that I already have a GH guitar is also a plus.

The track list and DLC will make or break this for me, I'm passing on RB until I get a PS3 or 360.

The article does say they're looking to ramp up their DLC and even full albums, so maybe!

I still think it sucks that the Wii versions need a Wiimote to power the instruments. Now you'll need a remote for the guitar and for the drums too! Extra instruments will probably cost the same as their counterparts for the other systems, which makes it even more of a rip off because they're just expensive shells. I wish they'd make standalone instruments that don't need a Wii remote to be plugged in.

They do look cool though.

Wow, after replying and serving to all the complaints that wii users have been dishing out, DLC, SD cards, online play, there's still RELUCTANCE?

I know Im getting this.
Here's an actual interview interview with Vicarious Vision about GH4 and all the details about DLC

I'm all over this
Nice!

I love this quote: "I know there has been detractors who say the Wii can't do DLC for various technical reasons – and they are dead wrong. The system is quite capable. " Ya hear that, Harmonix?

The more I read about this game, the more I want it. I'll be there day one, unless the set list takes a major crap. But damn. 85 songs? There's gotta be something in there to satisfy me.

Hmm. Basically $10 extra for the Wii version of the guitar and drums, as the full kit price is the same as the 360 and PS3 versions, but the game only is $10 cheaper ($49 on Wii, $59 on 360/PS3).

If they end up coming through on all of their promises, I will support the game though.

Have yet to pick any music game up for any of my systems... nice that I get to look around and choose from a lot of them. Cant wait to see how this fairs.

Terrific that older guitars work with Guitar Hero IV, but it looks like the experience is fully realized with the newer guitars.

Looking at the drums, I just don't know if I could ever play those well. Folks who've played Rock Band, how is the drumming experience?

Yeah, that looks much better than I was expecting. I'll definitely be getting this, probably the full band set too even though it's expensive. This looks a lot better than the pathetic Rock Band Wii at the very least.

I can't afford this + extra guitar shell + 2 more Wiimotes. That's more than the Wii itself cost. :/

Good luck to people getting this. Hopefully they'll fix the online play (GH3 for the Wii left much to be desired in this area. Terribadly hard for me to find a game. >

So...anyone else get this yet? I haven't had a chance to play it yet (just picked it up this afternoon, didn't feel like doing it at midnight) so was wondering what the available DLC is on release day. I'm assuming (hoping) each track is only 200 Wii points.
eugaet let us know how it is...im intrested in getting
OK, I'll post some initial impressions tomorrow. I'll probably only get to spend a couple hours w/ it tonight. And I only have two guitars, both from GHIII. I got the GH:WT game only, not the bundle. Couldn't justify buying more fake plastic instruments...although I'm planning on buying the drums later (maybe). Might see if the RB1 mic works with it.

Interesting: IGN gives it 8.8, but the 360/PS3 version gets 7.9

Wii: http://wii.ign.com/articles/923/923891p1.html

360: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/923/923873p1.html

Rock Band 2 takes the prize for this generation, due to some odd band-making issues, interface problems, and general continuity that World Tour just doesn't seem to have out the gate. I personally agree with those issues, but when you step into the realm of Wii, things change in a big way. Yes, World Tour has some definite things that need changing, and if it was about your 360/PS3 experience, I'd suggest you at least try to transition into Rock Band as well as Guitar Hero - even if you're like me, and a long-time Guitar Hero supporter - as there are a few things in that game that outrank Activision's latest offering, but on Wii specifically, Neversoft had a wildcard, and it's name is Vicarious Visions.
To me, both Rock Band and Guitar Hero are still different enough to validate multiple purchases (though on Wii that's more of an issue, since the hardware still isn't fully confirmed to work between both games; something Rock Band 2 is trying to change by allowing the new Guitar Hero guitars to work in MTV's game), and the main reason is that Rock Band 2 is a stronger party experience, while Guitar Hero is still the hardcore music gamer's challenging, breakneck speed music offering, now taking it one step further with a full creation mode as well.
On the software side you've got all the modes you'd expect from the "next gen" SKUs of Guitar Hero World Tour, and also a new Mii Freestyle mode that's a nice, simple take on something like Wii Music. It's a blast to play, though it'll take some serious skill to make anything that sounds good, so parents beware; it's basically a noise maker mode with more depth that younger players may never find. Still, if you're picking up World Tour for a few hardcore gamers around the house, Mii Freestyle is a great add-on mode that - at least in this reviewer's opinion - is already more rewarding than the whole Wii Music package by Nintendo.
[The music creation mode] for me though, was just too complex to really get into, and I've been playing musical instruments for over a decade, and have used actual professional music editing software for years. The combination of guitar control for trying to scrub and edit, along with the lack of keys to input musical notes (since you've only got five frets, and need to change up what notes are assigned to them constantly) I'd much rather have a sequel make use of an online or downloadable program away from the game itself, where players can use a full-blown Mac/PC program to make their music, and then upload it to the same bank of songs from a computer, rather than having to make the music using a guitar controller.
Interface is lame, star power is shared, band mode isn't really unique, can't tell how close you are to failure.

During the project's life, Vicarious worked with Nintendo to open up the SD card slot for additional use in-game (the reason SD will also be opened up for other games starting as soon as early next year), and the result of that hard work is an awesome package on Wii. For the first time ever on Wii, players can auto sign-in to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection when booting the game, and remain online in an Xbox Live-like experience for their entire play session. That means you can check online friends at any time, go to the music store and download tracks, play online with random players or friends at any time, or go to the music store all seamlessly throughout the game with no other sign-in at all. Once you boot the game, you're in, and the team even included an option to auto sign-in from boot every time, meaning that for the first time ever on Wii, all online work is done automatically; awesome.

tl;dr version: band elements feel tacked on, interface is bad, PS2 graphics, over 80 tracks, harder than RB, superior hardware, Mii Freestyle and persistent online rocks, SD card transfer is automatic, music creation could be better.

I'm still planning on buying RB1, then picking up RB2 and GHWT software for the CAG experience (cheap).

From reading that review, it sounds like the only things they really like about GHWT on Wii are the freestyle mode, and the fact that it opens up the SD card slot. So basically as a game this thing sucks, but it's got a nice technical achievement that will help other games, some of which won't suck like this one, and a non-game mode that works. That warrants an 8+ review rating?

OK, so with 2 GHIII guitars, GH:WT is pretty much...GH.

Only thing that threw us for a loop was the purple bar crossing the bass 'highway'...you strum w/o holding any fret buttons down. And there was a new 'long note' thing where you hold one down, but then strum to add another button and then sometimes a third button to the long note.

Also, I don't recall it being so bloody hard to throw star power. Usually I can set it off w/ just a small jiggle, but I couldn't do it in this version w/o the guitar damn near vertical...and sometimes not even then. I going to look for some sort of star power sensitivity setting.

Didn't mess w/ much else. Wife messed around w/ the character creator, but just to change Casey's clothes. Tried Mii Freestyle, but I think we'd really need the drum set to make it worthwhile, so we didn't get a good feel for that...although, based on reports, I'm glad we didn't get a first-issue GH drum set. There's been more than a few complaints.

So far, it seems pretty easy. We played one song on medium and then immediately punched it up to hard to keep us awake.

Oh, we couldn't get the RB1 mic to work (w/ or w/o the RB USB hub)...so maybe it's not just a standard USB mic? Damn you, Harmonix...

Anyone get the new peripherals?

EDIT: Oh yeah, DLC. Slim pickins' right now. There were maybe 9-10 songs available. It looked like the 3 from the Metallica 3-pack (from Death Magnetic), 3 from the Neversoft Pack (which were listed as free), 2 (I think) free guitar duels (Ted Nugent & Zack Wylde)...and I think that's it. Paid DLC is indeed 200 Wii points per song.

I should be getting my kit sometime tomorrow or on Wednesday. I'll have the drums, mic, new guitar, and an old GH III guitar, and an apartment full of roommates ready to play. So, I'll also post my views on the game probably on Thursday.

So how do the drums play? I have a Gh3 guitar and if that works w/ RB2, I'll probably just pickup GHWT game only, then add the drums later on. Otherwise, I probably won't bother with either.

All Standard USB Mics will work, BUT you need to have a Wiimote unattached to any instrument on and synced to the Wii, the Vocalist needs it to navigate menus.

I got a full band kit. The guitar is great, really really great. It's like they took in all the best parts of the LP, and the Strat, and made a whole new awesome guitar. I only had the LP, and it was totally worth the money for me.

My drum set is awesome, the pads feel great, bouncy, quiet(er)....but the cymbals don't work. over 50% of the time, they don't respond. I'm going to open them up tonight to see if I can fix em, otherwise back to BB they go. =(

Also, there's two free DLC songs, real ones, in addition to the Guitar Battles. I haven't played one of them, but there's one by An Endless Sprodiac (of Impulse GHIII fame), and it's really awesome.

I'm going to try it again tonight, but this time register a third wiimote as the vocalist. Will post results.

Kind of makes me wish I'd picked up one of those clearanced Logitech USB mics way back when at Target.

I've heard a lot of complaints about the drums, but thankfully mine work fine. I'm terrible at drums right now and can barely play on medium, but the set works.

Having read that IGN review, and having not played Rock Band yet, I'm afraid of just how easy Rock Band must be. If the instruments are compatible, I'll likely get the Wii version of RB2 once it's released and find out for myself I guess.
GH WT is definitely an easier game that GHIII for sure, though there are still a few songs that are giving me trouble.... BYOB comes to mind, but there are a couple other tough ones near the end too.

The game is great though, I'm glad I got the full set.

DLC up right now is:
200 point songs:
3 Metallica songs from Death Magnetic(200 each)
Foreigner- Hot Blooded
Boston- Rock and Roll Band
Blind Melon- No Rain
Rick Springfield- Jesse's Girl

Free Songs:
Ted Nugent Guitar Battle
Zak Wylde Guitar Battle
Sworn- Electro Rock
An Endless Sporadic- Anything

It's not much, but it's a start. And the online parts of this game are handled better than any other Wii game I've seen. The DLC in World Tour is set up in a much better way than the somewhat difficult to find DLC in Samba De Amigo for example, and the auto connect option when you turn on the game is very nice. Nintendo could learn a few things from this.

I got the kit tonight, rushed home so that my daughter and I could play. We are big GH fans so this was a big deal for us today.

So we are putting everything together and really excited. we both sit down, she on drums, I'm on guitar. NO DRUMSTICKS!!!!

I tore the boxes apart and nothing!!! wooden cooking spoons just don't feel the same.

C'mon, c'mon, didn't anybody else get this? I'm trying to decide whether or not to get the Wii version or wait until I get a PS3 to get that one.

I do, but don't have Rock Band so I can't compare. In fact, I was wondering if I could use my World Tour instruments to play Rock Band. I know there has been a lot of discussion about using Rock Band instruments to play World Tour, but what about the reverse?

Anybody else having a problem finding this in the store? I've been to every major retailer in my area and have only found guitar kits, no complete kits - for ANY of the systems. From Gamestop to CC to BB to Target and WallMart I've got nothin'. Did they pull them from shelves becuase of the hardware problems or something?

I have the Wii version. It's great and all, but although the GWT got a better review for the Wii than the 360 and PS3 versions, doesn't mean it's a better game. The only thing I see that sets apart the Wii version is the Mii freestyle mode which is stupid in my opinion.

Aside from that, the Wii version does get gimped once again. The character creator and song creator are gimped versions compared to the 360 and PS3 versions (not that it bothers me since I don't completely care for those features. But if you were looking forward to those features, then pick up 360 or PS3 versions). In addition, though I haven't checked for myself, the Wii is being gimped on the DLC as well. Apparently not all of the Death Magnetic album is available to us, but it is availble to PS3 and 360 owners. No word if that's going to change though.

Aside from those qualms, it's essentially the same game. If you've enjoyed the previous editions of GH series, then you'll like this game. There are a few new kinds of notes and slapping the notes are interesting. It's fun on the whole and me and my apartment mates are having a blast. So, I'm not upset that I bought the Wii version instead waiting to get the 360 version when I get my 360 soon.

On a side note fo anyone who currently owns this game but is having issues with drum sensitivity. Red Octane has released a program that allows you to change the senstivity. You need a USB-to-MIDI cable, if you don't have one, you can request one from them for free.

The more I think about it, the more it bothers me that the Wii version (except for the game only) has a $10 "Wii tax" tacked onto it.

The game only is $10 less on Wii than the other platforms, but the Band Kits are the same price? It doesn't make sense.

I guess they figure what is 10 extra bucks when you are dropping $190 for one game? It really doesn't make sense though. It should be $180.

OK, I got the RB1 Wii mic to work in GH:WT. Apparently, the Wii's not plug 'n play...it only worked when I already had the mic plugged in before powering up the Wii. Interesting that you can plug it in while RB1 is running and it works fine.

I've read that the Wii RB1 drum kit will also work with GH:WT (source is the same person who said the mic needed to be plugged in before turning on the Wii...s/he has both RB and GH:WT for Wii). I'll try it out today and report back.

I'm surprised there's not more talk about this game - I started playing yesterday and it's just as fun as any of the other Guitar Hero games. Still not my favorite game in the world, but it's nice to have some new songs and the vocal option is fun (I never played Rock Band). The Mii Freestyle mode is fun but I think I'll still spend more time with Wii Music for that kind of experience. I haven't bothered with the creation tools yet.

Haven't had any luck getting the RB1 drum kit to work. Tried both hot-plug and pre-plug. I'll have to go back and look for more confirmation that it should work...but I wouldn't be surprised that it just won't. So I may be buying the drum kit separately in the future.

EDIT: Also, the font for vocals are crap on a standard TV. Very hard to read.

Picked up the game earlier this week, and my girlfriend and I have definitely been enjoying it. The songs seem more fun to play this time around (even for bass) though the text for vocals, like eugaet said, seem squished together on an SDTV.

I picked up the mic for Rock Band, but my Wii didn't recognize it. I ended up taking it back and getting the Logitech Wii mic and that worked like a charm. I can't really see the Rock Band drum set working, mainly because the Guitar Hero drum set needs the Wii remote to work.

EDIT: any word on when they start shipping out individual GH drums?

Kind of off-topic, but seems like something eugaet (or someone else in this thread)might know... Is the Guitar Hero III guitar compatible with Rock Band? I always avoided Rock Band but we're having a lot of fun with World Tour (just wish there were more songs right off the bat).

The GHIII guitar is supposed to be compatible w/ Rock Band 2. If it is, I don't see why the Aerosmith GHIII guitar would not be compatible, either...but they have it marked 'no' on the following chart:

LINK

The GHIII guitar is not compatible w/ RB1 Wii. Not that I've tried it myself...I'm just going off of anecdotal evidence.

You know about the unlock code, right?

I'm still torn as to whether to buy this on the Wii or on the 360. Those of you that have played or seen both, are there any major differences? Other than the Mii freestyle part or whatever?

Wii is my first choice, as I have a GHIII guitar already, but I'm a little hacked off by the guitar kit and band kit costing basically $10 extra.

And since it's the same price, if the 360 version is better, I'd seriously consider picking it up.

I've only downloaded the free stuff, but prices for Wii DLC are 200 Wii points per song. It seems like songs take up around 180-ish blocks and you need at least that much free space to download a song to your console before you can send it to an SD card, it doesn't directly download to SD.

The game keeps track of any DLC on the Wii and SD card, and you can transfer between the two in-game. Songs loaded from the Wii have barely any load times, while SD card songs take a little bit longer, but not much. I'm surprised at how well it works, given the usual headaches involving storage and DLC on the Wii.

I haven't gone online with the game yet - what free stuff is there?

Off the top of my head, the free songs are:

Anything by An Endless Sporadic
Electrorock by Sworn
And both the Zakk Wylde and Ted Nuget guitar duel songs

There may be more currently, but that's all I can remember without being by my Wii. I do know that they just released three Oasis songs from their new album this week.
