Guitar Hero

That’s right, during Activision’s conference call on Wednesday, CEO Mike Griffith stated that Guitar Hero will be making it’s way to the Wii:
The key difference in our strategy versus the prior cycle, is that in addition to full support on Sony and Microsoft platforms, we will aggressively target the Nintendo platforms consistent with our multi-platform strategy and Nintendo’s expected growth. In fiscal 2008, we will double our offerings on the DS and the Wii, including Spider-Man, Shrek, Transformers, and Guitar Hero.
No other details were given during the 60+ minute conference call. Since the announcement was given by the President of Activision, I think the chances are high for an official press release in the future. If you wish to hear the announcement for yourself, check out the conference call below and skip ahead to around the 28-minute mark.
No love for Spider-Man, Shrek, and Transformers?
I'm sure Transformers coinciding with the Michael Bay release will probably suck, but if by some chance it doesn't, I'll be excited. More excited for a guitar attachment for the Wiimote. :D
I'm assuming they might even hook up with Nintendo and get some Nintendo themes into there.
That would be awesome. Could you imagine some minibosses or neskimos in there?

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how they do that. I'm assuming that the Wiimote will lock into the guitar in some way to transmit the button presses, etc., using Bluetooth. Maybe the guitar itself will be cheaper because of it?

I doubt the guitar controller will use the Wiimote.

It will either be blue tooth and just synch up (if Nintendo alllows them to do that--MS wouldn't let them use their wireless tech) or it will just plug into a GC or USB port.

The Wiimote will just lock into the base of the guitar, essentailly make the guitar like a nunchuk that envelopes the wiimote. It'd be stupid to do it any other way, the remote can already sense the tilting of the guitar, get you all your buttons, and no need for wireless tech. $20 guitar? Sold.

minibosses or neskimos would be freakin' great! as long as the contra level music is on there, that's all i ask...oh yeah and the zelda dungeon...

Yeah I see it like a giant nunchuk that you mount the remote onto the bottom side. As you swing the Wiitar around your character mimics your motion on screen. There could some be some levels like the ass-thumping dance game in Wario Ware. It would be sweet.

But do you think Red Octane (or whoever is doing GH now) wants to sell a $20 guitar when they could make more profit with the same type of guitars they have on the PS2 version?

I agree that makes sense, I just don't see it happening as the profit margin is higher on more expensive items.

I don't think the controller that just plugged into the Wiimote would be $20 anyway. The wired PS2 ones are $40 and it's the exact same technology, only difference here would be the lack of a cord to plug into the console. That's not going to knock the price in half as wires are cheap.

Definitely could charge as much as they want irregardless of the wireless tech. The key is that they're going to set the price that maximizes sales... I'm sure they have some idea of what the Wii market can bear.

The same as the PS2 Market where Guitar Hero has sold like hot cakes. Look for any GH bundle for the Wii to be $70-80.

Did you also envision the same thing for the CC?

I'm not sure I'll be willing to invest in another version of the game and controllers for mucho $.

Actually I wager Red Octane would split the difference and use the Wiimotes built in functionality and sell the Guitar for less than the 360 or PS2/3 versions and yet make more profit because their costs will be less.

But why sell it for less, even if they can reduce the costs? Unless they felt like they could sell significantly more guitars at a lower price, why not just charge the same price and pocket the bigger margin?

It will all depend on what their marketing data suggestions, plus what Nintendo will allow.

So you are correct, in that its possible it will be the same price.

After all, wireless may be built in, but I assume the current Guitars are actually fairly similar between the PS2, PS3, and 360 versions. In that the wiring inside the guitar is the same and the only change is the interface with the system.

They might well end up spending more to develop the interface with the first Wii game.

Who knows... I'm thinking off the top of my head regarding anticipated R&D and manufacturing costs.

The silly question I have is, what will Wii Dance games end up looking like? Will the dancepad connect to a Wiimote or require use of the Gamecube ports?

I'm fully planning to have a PS3 by next holiday season, so it really comes down to two things:

1. Will either version let me just use the guitars I aready have?
2. Will both versions have downloable content?

#2 is much more important than #1, in my book. If Wii doesn't allow for additional songs for download, and the PS3 version does...well...sorry, Nintendo.

*edit* The Wii guitar will be wireless and unique-looking, but will not attach to the Wii Remote. You can take that prediction to the bank.

I haven't played either Guitar Hero yet, I was really close to buying it today as a matter of fact... but I think I should just wait until I have a 360 and to get that version. Even though they don't have the first game on that platform.

1's the most important for me, as I've spent $150 on GH and GHII and two controllers, so the less I need to spend to acquire the next games the better. Future PS2 GH games will be of the highest priority right now. #2 just adds to the list of concerns for #1. If we get the ability to use USB to PS2 connectors for the game, that'll make the purchase a lot easier.
When do we get a song list?
When it's actually announced.

This isnt entirely on topic here, but I'm really glad Guitar Hero sold well. Its kind of strange, because Guitar Hero wasn't doing that well for a while after it was released... but all of the sudden it started selling like crazy. I wonder if this had anything to do with a lot of stores putting it on display... which seemed kind of odd they did that after the game had been out for a while.
how do you know?
Finding a good way to attach the Wii Remote would be much more of a hassle than slightly altering the plastic casing and producing their own guitar.
a port of a ps2 game?
Another piss-poor attempt at trolling the Wii boards?

On topic, I'm really excited about this, and I hope it comes pretty soon. If they could get the licenses for some classic Nintendo tunes in addition to the regular track list, that would be amazing. Metroid Metal would make some awesome tunes.
Downloadable tracks like the 360 version would be appreciated too, although I can't see Nintendo supporting that at this point in time.

Konami did so with DDR: Mario Mix. Though I doubt Nintendo will be publishing Guitar Hero, so I don't know if that changes things.

Any one here about the release date for this game yet? I have to play frets on fire because I need me guitar hero fix.

It hasn't even been officially announced yet.
