Hack and Slash games on consoles?

Ok so my wife has been playing deathspank and is totally in love with it. She has never been much of a gamer. Before meeting me she had a genesis as a kid but only played with it once or twice a month and only had a few games. She played a few random games like Spyro or Kingdom Hearts to help her little bro out and got sucked in, but never really got super in to gaming. Since meeting me she has slowly started to expand her horizons and slowly is playing more games. Deathspank though is the first that she has come home every night and confiscated the TV to play straight through.

She has now asked me to help her find similar games to play. I asked her what she likes and dislikes about the game and she said she liked just running around completing quests, that the game was not too hard and that she could just slam on the buttons to attack. Instantly my mind popped to Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance 1 and 2 which she may try, but I want to give her more to work with. I mentioned Diablo 2 and Torchlight which she had always made fun of me for playing thinking she may give them a chance now, but she said she does not want to play on the computer because the controller feels more natural and has less buttons. She said the same was true of World of Warcraft and other MMOs and that they were too big and intimidating.

Anyone have any other suggestions for hack and slash games or maybe games that are not hack and slash games but she may be able to transition to? I was thinking maybe Dragon Age would be good since I wanted to get it anyways and I have heard the console version is for "the braindead button mashers" vs deep stratagy like the PC version. I know she did enjoy exploring a bit when she played WoW before, it was just a bit too much. That again makes me think Dragon Age may work for her.

I should mention I do not own a 360 but I do own a DS, PSP, PS3 and Wii. I also have a controller for my PC if there is a PC game that supports it.
I've heard Sacred 2 is a great hack and slasher
*found it to be very buggy* Thanks for the suggestion though! O and I should mention I do not own a 360 but I do own a DS, PSP, PS3 and Wii. I also have a controller for my PC if there is a PC game that supports it.

I will mention it and see how she acts but I think she wants at least light RPG elements. I also think the gore would be too much
What about Castle Crashers?
Damn fine suggestion! I will mention that to her right away. I could totally see her going for it. I am hoping Castle Crashers wins the PS3 contest for best game of last year or whatever it was. 50% off would be a good reason to pick it up even if she dislikes it(I had and loved the 360 version).

Muramasa for Wii is an excellent hack-n-slash RPG, the visuals are also very cool looking which is something she'd probably appreciate.

The combat is pretty involved though, may not be for new gamers. Torchlight is good if you haven't played Diablo II.

Dragon Age's combat would piss a lot of people off.

And tell her Diablo II is literally played with one button. Maybe she'll be more interested.

Though it's not exactly hack n slash, I'd recommend Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, a nice lil co-op beat-em-up. It has enough RPG elements that help give it depth and since the principle of a beat-ep-upis similar to a hack n slash, she might get a kick out of it.

If she does get into the Baulder's Gate or Diablo style of games, I'd also recommend Marvel Ultimate Alliance since it carries with it a similar vibe.

That is why she does not want to play Diablo. She thinks games like WoW have way too many buttons and places to click but she thinks games like Diablo are just click click click click click....well to be fair even if D2 is possibly my fav game ever its kind of true ;)

Torchlight is out on XBLA soon, so don't rule that one out just yet.

You mentioned she liked Kingdom Hearts, and KH 2 is one hell of an awesome game.

She would probably like Zelda and Zelda-like games, so I'd consider Beyond Good and Evil (Out on XBLA in a week or so.) and Okami too.

And if she really just wants to hack and slash stuff, get her a Dynasty Warriors game. Not much else to 'em.

It's too bad you don't have a 360, the Fable games would be perfect, hell those were basically gateway games for my wife. She was a giant sci-fi/comic book nerd when I met her, but wasn't really into games until she played Fable II. She plays lots of different ones now. They are a bit older but if you can grab the X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance games, those are good examples.

I'm so sorry I missed a part of his big block 'o text, immaculate one. Since you never make mistakes and must know everything, why don't you make the perfect selection to meet his needs, instead of linking to a gigantic list.

Well forgive me for providing full details to try and get her the best recommendation ;)

I guess Dynasty Warriors / Samurai Warriors / etc Warriors would work. Bladestorm is also similar but requires a bit more strategy in troop types. I personally love the games you basically grab a horse ride to a pack of enemies and start hitting aaaa b aaa b, lol. It's fun.

Was reading an interview with the dev that a large base of DW players actually are female.

And aside from certain builds being extremely weak high end game, Sacred 2 isn't as buggy as people make it out to be. It's litle things here and there, just like any game (even AAA titles nowadays), but nothing gamebreaking.

You found Sacred 2 to be buggy? For what system? I recently got it on 360 ( also available on PS3 I think) and its not buggy at all. It crashed on me once.

My wife and I are playing through it coop and she loves it. We both played through and enjoyed the Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance and Champions of Norrath games on the PS2 and Sacred 2 is the closest you can get to that on current consoles. Plus you can get it for $20 or less.

Since you can do coop you can play with her and help her with the confusing aspects (for a new gamer) like upgrading weapons and spec'ing out your characters.

Oh right. I'm ill, so excuse me =P

For :ps3: Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, both Marvel Ultimate Alliance games and Sacred 2.

Also, the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection has some RPG's on it from that gen, so you may want to look into that as well.;)

Untold Legends is not much fun, and very repetitive IMHO but does meet the hack and slash co-op critiera. You get maxed out about 40% thorough the game and it really becomes a grindfest with little story. I would skip that game.
