I haven't played HL2 at all, cause i don't have a PC that supports it... anyone else looking forward to this or seeing any reviews? So far word is that it looks good but framerate is questionable. I can live with an unsteady framerate, I'll be picking this up next week for sure.

I am preparing to be blown away from what the PC people have been saying about this game. I'm very very excited about the game.

it's not really that great. I think the magic comes from a combination of CS: Source and HL: DM.. with the XBox version not even having an online mode, it's a rental at best.. it's a fairly short game.

It was the best single-player experience of last year, hands down. I don't know how the Xbox transition will hold up, considering you'll be playing with a controller as opposed to KBAM.

I played it at E3 and checked it out at Digital Life last month and it just looks awful on Xbox.
I remember Wombat putting down the controller in disgust after about 30 seconds.
I am suprised its actually being released on Xbox on not on 360.

Hopefully, the versions I saw were far from finished.

9.4 from IGN... not that I trust their reviews much.

According to the review the final build runs much smoother(30 fps) most of the time, only slowing when a bunch of stuff is exploding onscreen. They also commented that it looks much nicer, with little or no aliasing.

I really hope this is accurate, but I'll definitely wait foe gamespot's review(among others) before even thinking of buying.

Well if you don't have a pc that can run Half-Life 2 then I would say buy it for the xbox. Overall from the screens and such it doesn't look that bad. Sure it doesn't compete againist a high-end pc but still looks good for the xbox. Plus all the physics seem to be there.

My pc was able to play this game and it was one of the best single player experiences ever and I think everone should play this game at least once.

I don't really see the point if there's no Live play.

It'd probably be a good buy once it drops to $20 or $30 as a result of nobody buying it.

I'm definitely interested as I've heard nothing but good things about the pc goty but seeing as how there's no Live modes or anything outside of campaign I can afford to wait for a drop as there's plenty of other stuff to play.

I'm sure it will do well with reviews.
it's a rental at best..
Renting Half-Life 2 is like renting Ocarina of Time.

If you don't buy it you have no right to calll yourself a gamer, you casual pussy.

I'm not really interested after reading that there is no multiplayer, that the frame rate is bad, that the load times are bad, and that the graphics can't compare to the PC version. Funny how these are the exact issues Half-Life on Dreamcast had.

man people really have no idea what kind of a technical feat this game is on xbox... It's just whine whine about how a $150 piece of hardware can't run it like a $1500 peice of hardware does... I'm eagerly awaiting this game.. and all I want from it is to be playable. I don't need all the bells and whistles.

I've not played the final yet, but these are some of the highlights of the review..

"Originally requiring five times the amount of RAM available on Xbox"

"Half-Life 2 on Xbox runs better than an average PC computer with high particle physics on, but without the high resolution graphics dialed all to 10. The texture maps are clean and the detail is there -- But it's not equal to the best running PC."

"Improving on the PC version, the initial load time into the game is shorter, and the load times between sections are also shorter. Each one is only 15 seconds. "

Also there's the negative-
"There are sections in the game, like in the PC version, where a chain of exploding barrels hurls thousands of polygons into the air and bodies -- and the framerate does suffer. "

Looks entirely playable and I will be picking mine up first day!

It will be a definate BUY... of course at the Platinum Hits price....hahahaha. Diehard fanboys of HL that don't already own it will buy and Xbox fanboys don't even have it on there calendar due to the 360 launch; no offense Scorch.

true neudog, kind of bad timing with the 360 launch. However, it is backwards compatible.. so it'll look even better on 360.

I put a preorder on it today at EB and paid it off in full. Will be picking it up Wednesday before work. I am a big fan of the original HL but I haven't gotten the chance to play HL2 yet (due to my stoneage PC). I'm very excited to be able to play it.

Pre-ordered my copy back in August.

I'm glad it doesn't have Live support. Big name FPS with Live support always bring out the garbage.

But since EA is handling the release, I'm fairly certain it would have had shitty servers to begin with.
I'm glad it doesn't have Live support. Big name FPS with Live support always bring out the garbage.
Yeah, it's better for them to not include a crucial component of a FPS.;)

I'll rent it if it BB has it, but I really don't think I'll buy it.

I don't really consider the on line portion of FPS games crucial unless a company is going to spend some major time to do it right. Plenty of decent on line modes have come out, and not one of them has been good enough to pull me off of Halo 2. I'm looking forward to Half Life 2 as a single player experience, but I can wait for a price drop. I'm glad I'll get to play it in 720p on my 360. I'll be tied up with a couple of 360 games for a little while, so hopefully this will drop in price by the time I get to it.

I prefer single player FPS over multiplayer. Most FPS games fail to deliver anything new in the multiplayer section. You play deathmatch in one game, you've played them all. The only online FPS games I've played recently that are worth a damn are Halo 2, FarCry Instincts, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Counter-Strike, and the Battlefield series.

Multiplayer gameplay is a crutch for bad story telling. Without it, it forces a developer to create an experience that'll keep a player from shelving the game.

Case in point, Halo 2.

Well, seeing as I still haven't bought the PC version, I'll probably just buy this one on the cheap. I'd prefer the controller anyway, I can't use a keyboard & mouse worth a shit on any FPS.

That's a rather large sig.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Half-Life 2 because I don't play games on my computer and the fact that it is backwards compatible means that I'm more likely to play it right away. I've had this game on pre-order since the summer and I can honestly say that I would never get around to playing this game on Live even if it did have online play. That's generally how it works out for me.

Comparing Half-Life 2 to Ocarina of Time is asinine.

And I bought the collector's edition of Half-Life 2 the day it came out on PC.

I'm interested. I just bought an Xbox for 75$ from a friend and I'm thinking of either buying this or Gun this week. My "college" computer wouldn't be able to run it at my high graphic standards so it sounds like a good deal to me. As to the whole multiplayer thing... I heard you have to pay monthly to play online with the Xbox, so it doesn't sound like it makes sense to put multiplayer in. PS2 was free online, but more importantly thats what the PC is for. Its like those damn MMORPG's that charge you monthly.. what a rip.

Having played the first 20 minutes of the PAL version, I can tell y'all that the graphics are not bad in the least, and so far the farme rate has held up, though I have yet to experience any full on combat. I'm not a PC snob at all and have never even seen HL2 running on one, so my little virgin mind will be blown.

So far, it looks better than Riddick and Doom 3, the other 2 FPS graphical masterpieces on the system, and I'm really fucking excited to find out what's up with City 17.

Well, I'm about to go hook it up to my widescreen and see how it looks in 480p.

I'll post some more impressions in this thread later.

Meh on the XBox version. I wish they would have just waited and released the sucker on the X360.

Yeah. With a map editor (and Live, of course).

just got done playing for about an hour and a half. It's really obvious where they cut corners-- it's got a weird frame rate, for one thing and the physics are just plain odd (kinda like Max Payne physics, where things more or less float around with no sense of weight or friction.) I take back what I said earlier-- I still think Riddick is the best looking xbox game.

it's kinda fun so far, started off great, but Route Kanal is a bit boring, so I hope it picks up. I probably will just wait until I have a good PC to play it on.

GameSpot Review

8.3

The Good:
Epic single-player campaign; strong visual style with cool environments and cooler enemies; physics engine lets you manipulate the environment in cool ways; top-notch voice acting and storytelling; a highly immersive experience from start to finish.

The Bad:
No multiplayer gameplay whatsoever; the frame rate struggles most of the time, and downright dies on occasion; nothing to differentiate the xbox game from its pc counterpart, save for its flaws.

An overrated - but good - PC game. The reason the PC game stands out is just as much because it comes with CS and is usually the engine-of-choice for popular mods; obviously that's not a factor with the XBox version. The single-player is fun, but those who only play the XBox version will probably walk away with a "THAT was the best game of last year?" look on their face.

Still, for those who haven't played through the PC version, it's a very respectable last hurrah before MS dumps 95% of their support for the system and leaves those not wanting to dump $400+ on their new toy in the cold.

No multiplayer really hurts it, even if it they just threw in HL2: DM it would have been nice. Their excuse of "well, Counter-Strike is already on the XBox" was an amusing cop-out.

on second thought, the game seems more like a "just to see if we could" experiment. It runs decently, but nothing to spend $50 on.

I also don't find the game play to be all that fun or intense, at least in the first 2 hours or so. maybe it picks up. seems like they just wanted to see how far they could push the hardware, not make a good game. Valve gets their cookie-- it ain't pretty, but they shoved it all in there.

just my opinion

I dunno what you guys are talking about but I'm loving it. I played maybe 10 min of the PC version total ever before picking up the Xbox one and I am not dissapointed. The physics and detail and action and charachters are so awesome. A great game. That is, if you haven't been spoiled by the PC version first.

It seems pretty good to me as well. There are some frame rate issues, but it's definitely one of the best looking games on Xbox. The gameplay is fun, but there's something about the way it controls that you can tell it was a PC game first.

Has the framerate been as bad as some people are saying? I have played the PC version but kind of thinking of picking this up w/ some trade-in credit. Always wanted to play HL2 again and putting it on the xbox may be what I need to get started again. However with Gamespot saying how the framerate just "dies" sometimes I am not to sure.

the thing about the framerate is that in areas where there's 7 combine soldiers and 4 of your antlions running around with barrels exploding and the physics going nuts, yes it does get choppy. But never to where I feel it's led to cheap deaths or unplayable situations.

The main framerate issue is immediately after loading a game or loading a new area, for about 2-4 seconds, the framerate is very bad. After that the game runs as normal. There are just these areas of hesitation that don't bother me becuase they're immediately after a loading screen and there's no enemies to fight or anything.

I just bought the game, and I am a bit disappointed. The graphics looked about the same as 600 X 400 resolution on the PC with all graphical options turned off. If you move too close to a wall, you can not tell what you are looking at. I hate that.

Overall, I am going to enjoy the game for the experience. The sound design is really amazing. In the early level, you are told to get to the rooftop quickly, and you hear the boots of the soldiers racing up the stairs towards you. Quite intense.

Wow, I can't believe the lack of an online mode is keeping so many people away from an amazing game. Does no one play single-player games anymore? If that's the case, you're missing out on a lot of great games.

It's not the online mode that is keeping me away from it, it's the issue of framerate problems that everyone is talking about. I would rather stick with the superior version on my PC then a dumbed down version on the Xbox.
I would rather stick with the superior version on my PC then a dumbed down version on the Xbox.
I heartily agree. I consider the Xbox version to merely be an alternative to the PC version, for people who don't have that as a feasible option.

I find it kind of disturbing that console ports of FPS games are overtaking PC ones in terms of sales - I can see some of the factors why - cheaper hardware, less hassle in setting up, but if the sales difference becomes significant, then FPS's will be built from the ground up for consoles, rather than PC's, no longer around precision mouse/keyboard.

Calling Half Life 2 over-rated makes me ask you a question: "What would you consider an appropriately-rated game".>???<

Half Life 2 deserves all the kudos it received....

The reason the PC game stands out is just as much because it comes with CS and is usually the engine-of-choice for popular mods; obviously that's not a factor with the XBox version. The single-player is fun, but those who only play the XBox version will probably walk away with a "THAT was the best game of last year?" look on their face.

YOu may be shocked and awed to find that alot of us ONLY value the single player game. Multiplayer is always the same. Run and Gun. Single Player and storylines are what its really about for FPS's, and thats where HL2 delivered. An interesting storyline, and LOADS of content.....lots of varied maps, and environments, and plenty of levels. Its one of the longest FPS's released in recent memory. Thats what won it game of the year, not because it came with counterstrike Source (which is, just counterstrike in the new engine).

No multiplayer really hurts it, even if it they just threw in HL2: DM it would have been nice. Their excuse of "well, Counter-Strike is already on the XBox" was an amusing cop-out.

Well I do agree that not having ANY multiplayer was a bit of a surprise...even if it was just with bots...or just local....not live...something...would be nice.
