A week or two ago I got these coupons in the mail from Half Price Books, which is a national chain in several states that sells new and used books, cds, DVDs, and video games at 50% off retail. I sometimes find good deals at this store on vintage console games, new PC games, and strategy guides.

I don't know if they'll accept scans or not but it doesn't hurt to try. I received the coupons in the mail, but they do e-mail them out as well. Be sure to add yourself to the mailing list so you can get future coupons:

The coupons are:

40% off a single item - Mar. 26-27 only
30% off a single item - Mar. 28-29 only
20% off a single item - Mar. 30-31 only
50% off a single item - April 1 only

There's a store local to me that has some decent but overpriced PSX games like Tactics Ogre that are worth using the 50% off coupon for.

Also, this chain is a great place to find cheap comic books.

My HPB is alright, the selction is low. But, I did find a FFVII for $35 and MGS1 for $6.95, about four months ago. Of course I bought them and ebayed them for much more. My originals were in better shape. But, sometimes they have good stuff.
I will check it out. Are the guides found in the same place as games? I didn't know they had games til awhile ago and have only been back once to check for games. Great place for college books for western civ lol

thanks for scans

*edit* not sure if it's the mac on I'm (probably is) I open the .doc file in mac's doc viewer and it's a table w/ a bunch of html it looks like, all txt haha.. I'll try when I get to a comp w/ Microsoft Word.
The scan is in Microsoft Word format. I don't have a graphics converter - if someone have one, please repost to a jpg.

I found the guides near the games or sports section.
Christ, where is this store? The ones here in Dallas practically never have any good console games, though I did get guides for Xenosaga II and III a couple of weeks back that were in great condition.
They got stores all around Dallas. The biggest one is at E northwest pkwy & 75, across the 75 from NorthPark mall. Console games are iffy but they have a good collection of strategy guides like a Kingdom Hearts 2 I saw two weeks ago. Its YMMV in every store - take a tour this weekend.

Here is a list of store locations in the US:

I love HPB. It's almost like going garage to garage sales, you never know what kind of cool stuff you are going to find.

I was there last week and bought Rise of Nations for $0.99. Also i saw Battlefield 2 there for $8 or $9 bucks. My box can't run it now but I am hoping to build a new one in the next few months. Are lots of people playing BF2? If so I may use the 50% coupon on that.

Trust me, I know where they all are in Dallas. You can travel in about a 6 mile radius from my apartment and hit 3 of them, and since the big one you mention is right on my route home, I stop by at LEAST once a week. I hit the one in Lewisville every time I get an oil change (free at my dealership in that area), and there are two in Arlington and one on highway 183 that I visit every time I go to my Aunt's house, probably once every month or two.

Even though I visit them all constantly, I basically never see anything outside of PS2 games no one wants (though I did see a $14.99 copy of Ninety Nine Nights just yesterday at the big one) or the same old PS1 games they've had for a year (I'm looking at YOU, Frisco store).

I am a freaking Half-Price addict. :D

Regarding PC games... Anything inventory they get in bulk (at least around here) is the same as what's in Big Lots. So, something that is $10 at HPB is $4-$6 at BL. Of course, you will save overall with these coupons, but I just wanted to put this out there for you guys.

Has anybody had success with the coupons, or have they been asking for the email that it was sent in? Found something today I may want to get ahold of and 50% off would be pretty nice.

Might be time to snag a DVD set or something. My local HPB never really has any good games. They never get any trade ins on The Wire seasons either :(

They don't ask for that. At least last time they didn't ;).

My fiancee and I went last night to use the 40% off email coupon and I just printed off two sets of the coupons and we each used one. The coupon didn't scan but he just typed in some numbers and it went through just fine. I got John Grisham's new book for $8! woohoo! Although it'll be $1 in 2 months time...

I used the 50% coupon Zygote posted and got the Ultimate Matrix Collection on HD-DVD for $30 in St. Louis Park. They also had the Matrix Trilogy (HD-DVD) for $25 with the coupon if anyone is interested.

I bought the Blu Ray edition of Planet Earth (the BBC version) for 24.99. I wonder if the 5.00 off a 20.00 purchase would have stacked or not. Ah well.
I was going to hold out for a deal on a HD-DVD version, but I thought I might as well bite since it's the BBC version. And plus I can avoid the "LOLLERCOASTER YOU BOUGHT A DEAD FORMAT" comments.

Using coupons at two different stores, I picked up a greatest hits copy of Final Fantasy 7 (great shape except for some cracks in the case) for $30 and a Collector's Edition Twilight Princess guide for about $7. Not too shabby.

FF7 at the full $60 isn't all that great of a deal. Half off of that is. :D
Their trade-in prices are horrible. Worse than EB/GS or any other chain. I mean, they sell games pretty cheap usually and pricing tends to vary from store to store, so I imagine trade-in prices vary from store to store as well. They also will refuse to take your stuff if they're overstocked on something or just don't want to trade with you for whatever reason.

I know for stuff like comic books, they pay by the pound, like a few cents a pound, but then they sell most of their comics for 50 cents each and they tend to sit and collect dust even at that price.

HPB is a chain where you should buy, never sell or trade, the exception being if you get a big box of new release, popular hardcovers (Steven King or something) for 10 cents each at a garage sale and want to sell them for a quick 25 cents each. Even then, you're better off just putting them on half.com or Ebay.
50 cent comic cooks at Half Price Books? Ha! Not at the one here in Lexington, KY. First, all of the trade paper backs are sold at half off cover price, meaning I could get them brand new when they come out for only slightly more from Amazon. The individual comics are sold based on their "book value." I wanted to buy a few Web of Spider-Man comics there, but each one was priced $1 below the Near Mint book value. I could find better deals at a real comic shop.

Oh, some HPBs have HD DVDs? Well yeah I guess people might trade them in... interesting. I didn't think about that. I should of thought about that, seeing how I'm sure some people dropped off their 'dead' technology for dirt cheap... though those people are silly. Maybe I'll stop there this evening. Maybe I'll stop posting in 'stream of conscience'ness format. Is that even how you spell that? I ought to google that before I post it... naa I"m too lazy. Anyone still reading this? I'm sorry.

Today is the last day for 50% with the coupon and each store is open till 10PM, mainstore at 11PM. Some HPBs have HD DVDs and Blue Ray now. If anybody wants it I saw a Bioshock at Frisco for $30 - half off would be $15. That was on Friday.
Well, this scan is for the year of 2007 not 2008, not if sure they take this now. Just to let you guys know.
