sold 2.32 million copies on NOV 9, over 125 million dollars

Halo 2 came through for microsoft and bungie as the future of the xbox rest on it, as many articles states.

As you know, Halo 2 was released on November 9 (two days ago). Peter Moore, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President, made what many thought was an over-confident prediction in the morning. "I'm calling a $100 million day on Halo today," he said.

Well, it turns out that, if anything, he was under-confident. According to Microsoft, 2.38 million copies were sold on Nov. 9, which translates to about $125 million made. If those numbers are correct, that's the highest one-day earnings of any entertainment-related product ever, even surpassing the highest weekend gross for a holiday movie, though obviously not as many people are enjoying said entertainment ($50 game vs. $9 movie).

I was at a friends house last night playing some Halo 2 on XBL. It was good, but not great. I was tempted to take one of the 6 spare Halo 2 LE's he had sitting around, though.

hes talking about "oppion".....im assuming it was meant to be "opinion"....which you clearly spelled out the same wrong way twice....which makes it look a lot less like a spelling error or a typo (see below)

Not to crap on anyone's parade for the game or anything, but it's essentially been on sale, through pre-orders, for, what, 2 years now, at least? Give any hyped series title, a Final Fantasy for example, enough run up time and it will produce similar numbers. If you want to be impressed about something, pat the production facility's back for producing that many copies in so short a time.
Well is $9 for two hours of entertainment with no resale value worth more than $55 for as much entertainment as you can get out of it?
No. I paid $40 for LE Halo 2 and I'm happy. :)

if the biggest company in the world could not produce enough copies of a game they knew was going to sell through the roof, there would have been a major problem. they had a solid month to make enough copies.

That's counting all the pre-orders, which I'd guess accounted for the majority of its sales. It didn't sell that many in 1 day, it just rang up that many in 1 day. It's not that impressive.

Well I think it's pretty good. Better than when you released your game, CaseyRyback Extreme Bass Challenge, and were only able to craft that one cd you made out of balsa wood.

I think the "2.32 million copies sold the first day" record speaks for itself--you are clearly wrong. It is a great game!

I've no beef with the game, but that logic hardly holds water.

by the way, if we start equating "quality" with "quantity" as EvilE did, then clearly the Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls were the best bands ever in the late 90's.

I know Halo was a great game, and and a QUALITY game, and so far Halo 2 has gotten rave reviews, and everyone I know who has it loves it--it is no "spice girls" or "Backstreet boys". The Halo series will go down in history more like Pink Floyd, IMHO....

You're missing the point. The point is that sales number or popularity does not always equate to quality, therefore it is a poor arguement that something is great because it sold well. However, in this case, popularity and quality are holding hands and having a beer.

Are you making it your mission to crap on Halo's parade?

It doesn't include every single preorder. It only includes preorders which were paid for in full and picked up. It doesn't count preorders which were not picked up yet.

As for the comment about "give any game enough time". You can preorder any game you want now. FF7 had huge hype and huge preorder numbers. This is not the first game that you could preorder, and its not the most hyped game in history either. Please, whatever you think of the game, just admit that these sales numbers, in the context of the video game industry, are impressive.

You know what made a lot of people preorder? The "limited edition" packaging, they made that look very attractive. Brilliant move by MS.

See, but quality is still a matter of opinion. I certainly wouldn't think people who bought Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls albums thought they were horrible but bought it anyway. The people who bought it most likely enjoyed that music and probably felt it was great and quality.

While I'm not endorsing either band, as I think they're garbage myself, just because WE don't think they're worth buying, doesn't mean the people who bought it feel the same. Same case here. Obviously the millions of copies of Halo 2 went to people who wanted them, while others stand around and say, "I don't like it, but a lot of people are buying it, so it's just another case of low-quality, overhyped, overrated garbage."

I think that's the point.

Well done Banky. :applause:

True. So then, Enter the Matrix is a great game then, huh?

All I'm saying is that popularity doesn't always equal quality, though obviously quality is not something that can be easily defined, which is a given.
True. So then, Enter the Matrix is a great game then, huh?
I know as a huge Matrix fan, I thought it was a great game. I'm not saying it was perfect, but I got my money's worth out of it and completed it twice. I'm sure there are others who feel the same way. I'm not trying to convince you it's a great game, because you're entitled to your opinion, but I bought it and I enjoyed it.

Thanks for proving my point.
All I'm saying is that popularity doesn't always equal quality, though obviously quality is not something that can be easily defined, which is a given.
And all I'm saying is that popularity doesn't always mean something isn't quality, since quality is inherently subjective.
I think we are agreeing actually.

And I probably should have prefaced my first post with "I'm totally an elitist music snob."
Yeah, we are, I just felt like exercising some more legitimate posting skills for once rather than the usual "PWNED" and "LOWL!"

Heh, and believe me, I completely understand the elitist music snob slant. ;)

I haven't touched on the game's quality, so I'm not saying anything one way or the other about it, so no, no parade crapping, unless you're dumb enough to judge the quality of it on sales.

Yes, it has the sales numbers, just not all on one day like you want to believe. Post me up some concrete numbers as to how many of its sales were from people just walking in and buying it. Last I heard it's preorders were well over a million. Those count as sales for months ago as far as I'm concerned, not first day sales.

As for the limited edition, I suppose that was smart, though horribly inaccurately named.
As for the limited edition, I suppose that was smart, though horribly inaccurately named.
Well, in the end it probably won't be completely inaccurate. While currently still in abundance, I doubt the LCE will be unlimited in supply, but who knows.

True. I guess a million-billion of them is still finite. Though that makes every version of every game ever in history limited too.

wow some folks just want to say anything to prove halo 2 is crap. Halo 2(by professional review sites have Gave it nothing but rave reviews, pretty much game of the year(my opion). I dont believe the nuimbers prove anything except lots of people wanted to give this game a go, and probably succesded in most cases. I know I am enjoying this game more so then any other xbox games.

Sales are stunning+Rave reviews(GOTY contender)= success finacially and criticaly.

but yet some people still call it MEDICORE, and saying that halo 2 was overhyped and garbage, and forgot to say that thats their opion and only that. Because the only thing it boils down to is the numbers to Microsoft, and their dancing in our hard earn cash right about now.
Yeah, there will probably be a Halo 3 now!
Actually, in GI they said that Bungie no longer has Xbox dev kits. Instead they have started development of Halo 3 with their new Xbox2 kits. I'm sure Halo 3 would be a great launch title.

Also, I don't trust GI since they are retards. However, this information may be true. Or not. Take it as you will.

How can you prove a game is crap? Just because it didn't sell as many copies as you thought the first day doesn't make it bad. Like I said, I haven't touched on the game at all, just the sales, which were inflated by preorders.

PS: GOTY is Half-Life 2's alone. If Halo 2 makes it over HL2 it will go down as one of mankind's most awful crimes.

If it's true, I wonder if that's the cause of Halo 2's abrupt ending or if Bungie had it planned like that all along, because that would make 2 Halo games that had flaws because of MS's shoving at that point. 3 if you count Halo 3 likely getting rushed to be a XB2 launch title.

I'm not touching quality, so lets put that completely aside.

I'm just saying that these sales numbers are extremely impressive. You know what? I don't care how many were from preorders. You know whY? Because you can preorder anything. Tons of games that were just as hyped and available for preorder for just as long didn't do nearly as well. The GTA's had hype, a long advertising and preorder period, and a much larger installed base, but didn't have these numbers. Great numbers by any standard, but not like this. There were 1.4 million preorders as of October 15. 2.4 million copies sold on the first day. Does it matter if it was preordered? You put down $5 to preorder, you don't buy it 6 months in advance. You can cancel preorders. Preorders do not diminish the staggering numbers this game has, at all, and if anything they make it look even better. So many people wanted it that they took the time to preorder.

BTW, did I just play in a game with you on XBL, jmcc? Nice game :p
