Halo 2 Vista - Gen. Discussion & Info.
Game looks the same it did on the XBOX 1. WTF did they actually do to make this better?
halo 2 for vista = people buy MORE copies of Vista to play this game because of the halo craze...meh
Well they need to keep a lot of legacy code in because they want to make sure the stuff that works good in 2000/xp will work just as well in Vista.

Anyways I have windows Vista home premium full, which I bought at 50% off from the Compusa close out. Am I planning on installing it? Yes, but not now... not until the next system upgrade which will include a core duo/quad core and a Direct X 10 card and of course when MS releases Service Pack 1 for Vista.
Actually no, the reason DX10 is only in Vista is because there is no legacy code in it. Waiting until you have a new computer to install Vista is a very good idea, but you don't need to wait until service pack 1 because it's already extremely stable. (and 90% of the service pack is just adding compatibility with Server 2008 anyway)

If I wasn't an achievement whore I would have no interest in this  Will be getting it this week but won't be able to play it until next week since the expected delivery date of my new PC is June 5th. Of course that doesn't mean it won't show up sooner or later but still I think it will be sometime next week.

My current PC could run it as well but is still on XP and no point upgrading the OS when I will have a new computer with Vista. I could have just upgraded this PC since it isn't even 3 years old yet but there was so much I was wanting to upgrade that I decided it was better to go totally new.

i've read a lot of problems with people upgrading over there previous xp system, instead of doing a fresh install. That's why I am waiting for a cpu/gpu price reduction in July (I am gonna get a phat paycheck that month anyways)

I don't know of anyone who is upgrading to Vista just for Halo 2... most of the PC forums I go to, people have 0 interest at all in Halo 2 and it is mostly just a big joke, especially with Quake Wars: Enemy Territory so close.

I think the Halo craze only affects those on the 360, because I don't know anyone who is saying "Damn, Halo 2 is so awesome, I need to go grab Vista ASAP!!"

I did a fresh install of Vista, and the only thing that has given me trouble is Battle for Middle Earth 2, but I found a fix. Other than that, it works like a dream.

I heard that with halo 2 for PC, you can play against xbox halo 2 players... is this true?
I heard that with halo 2 for PC, you can play against xbox halo 2 players... is this true?
No. The first game to do that is ShadowRun with more to follow.

I don't get all the bashing on this game.

1) If you don't have Vista quit bitching and GTFO.
2) This game has improved graphics over the xbox version.
3) This is still the halo 2 everyone loved before.
4) Mouse and keyboard users have something to be happy about (I myself will be using a 360 controller)
5) 2 new multiplayer maps
6) a multiplayer map editor meaning for limitless possibilities for multiplayer maps.
7) and added achievements for us xbox live nerd point whores.

1) I already have it but waiting for CPU/GPU price drops before doing a system upgrade and installing vista
2) from the gamespot.com review video it looks the same... halo 2 in 1280x1024..big whoop. Looked fine on the xbox.
3) I never loved halo 2, I just got it because my good friend who had an xbox said to get it when I got my xbox last year so we can play online.
4) meh.
5) big whoop...2 extra maps.
6) well someone done the road would have made one anyways....
7) big whoop.

I will wait til the title reaches 20 bucks ...that should be by the end of the year since its not worth 50 bucks. Now if they included stuff like oh the soundtrack, a making of the game, interviews and all that good stuff..then sure..but since they didn't oh well..

the problem I am having with this comparison is that how do they get a good screenshot from an Xbox game?!?! Putting a camera to take a picture of a tv screen does not do justice.

You will never convince any pc gamer with a halfway decent rig that Halo 2 has decent graphics in this day and age.. they would have to overhaul the entire engine.

Halo 2 should bomb just like Shadowrun will bomb... any hype I've seen on any pc games message board is nothing but negative.

And keyboard / mouse control is sluggish anyways, even at the highest setting it has been said it doesn't work right - and achievements and Live Anywhere are just gimmicks used to get 360 fanboys to buy a subpar overpriced port. Bonus maps and a map editor? Decent, I guess, but you'll never see any mods out of it so any sort of longevity is sapped right away from it.

I'll save my $50 for Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, but you all enjoy Halo 2. Halo may be a big craze for 360 owners, but it really doesn't make a blip on the radar on the PC side of things. I was mildly interested until I saw it was full of glitches and bugs, they took out features (no co-op play, for one, Live Anywhere is more like a beta version and doesn't work right all the time, for another), and Microsoft was trying to get $50 for it.

Picture was probably taken with a capture card... I don't think anyone is pointing a camera at a television anymore

And I know someone will say "lol you put down Halo 2 but are playing Jade Empire", well, Jade Empire is how you take an Xbox game and *properly* port it to the PC, and I'm all for supporting that.

Yeah, we had far better graphics than that back in 2004 before Halo 2 even came out. We've had far better gameplay than what Halo 2 has to offer for a hell of a lot longer than that.

Not saying halo 2's graphics are the best, but come on I still play halo 2 , just played it a few weeks ago anyways, so to get a newer version with way better graphics, I am happy.

And just asking, but what did jade empire do to improve over the xbox version?

I played through and beat the xbox one.

Wow, utter shit, now in higher resolution! Neato!

I hate how, thanks to all the marketing buzz about "HD" these days, people seem to think that higher resolution = instantly better graphics. I can run Quake 1 at 1600 x 1200, and it still looks like ass.
And just asking, but what did jade empire do to improve over the xbox version?
From wikipedia:
Changes from the Xbox version includes increased resolutions up to 1600x1200 (1920x1200 in Widescreen), new special effects and redrawn textures, two new martial styles named iron palm and viper, a new rhino demon transformation, new monsters, new high level weapons, an improved AI, with enemies able to take cover more often; a new "Jade Master" difficulty level, with ability to import savegames; a new world map interface; and keyboard and hotkey support.

Unimpressive. The graphics are far better than the Xbox version, yes, but when compared to PC games from 2005 and up - no.

Besides, the graphics aren't really the problem; it's the gameplay. Halo 2 was designed from the ground up for a controller. It feels, and controls perfectly on that platform. However, when compared to FPS' on the PC the game plays terribly. It is slow, clunky, and just mediocre. When I played Halo 2 on Vista, I was using my 2000DPI mouse. My look speed was hella fast, but I was running walking like I had just came out of the E.R. To me, that doesn't translate to fun.

Also, the maps are rather primitive due to hardware limitations of the Xbox, and are now dwarfed by maps in modern FPS games for the PC.

Is Halo 2 a great console game? Yes.
Is Halo 2 a great PC game? No. There are just too many FPS games on the PC that wipe the floor with it in every way for there to be a real place for Halo 2.
ok........so who's right?
Uh, maybe the people who own the game and have confirmed you can only play against other PC users?

Maybe Microsoft for claiming the game would only be playable against other PC users?

Halo 2 Xbox wasn't built for the Live Anywhere service, it was built for the old school Live setup, Shadowrun was built with the new technology in mind, therefore it can enable cross platform play.

Smartest thing I've read in this whole thread. A crap port is a crap port. I wich people would stop trying to turn everything into something it's not.

amen

I'll vouch for this game, I enjoyed it more than I did the regular version, could tell the difference graphically. And I had a lot more fun using the 360 controller than the mouse and keyboard. Again I'm a classic console gamer over PC so I am more comfortable with the controller.

I'm confused as to why ITDEFX is in this thread when he seems to hate everything about this game and could care less.
I think that is why he is in here, to hate.
well to answer your questions, this was a hyped up game for the xbox, but to be honest many other fps are better then this. When it was coming to the pc, some people thought it would be a descent port with at a cheap price but MS slapped us in the face, twice! First time... saying REQUIRES VISTA , second time 49.99!!!!!!!!!!!

Outside of Live constantly kicking me off, its been an okay affair so far. The game is still solid enough, its just a shame Game for Windows Live is weak right now. The controller scheme feels a little slow to me, so I've been relying on mouse and keyboard.

I agree there are plenty of PC FPS games out there that are better than this. Either way This is still a solid game, and being a fan of the other halo's in the series I am glad I bought this. This may not have the fancy graphics of current PC games, but the online experience can't be beat.

Just sorry to hear you don't have vista to run this.

If this thread was only posted in by people who are genuinely interested/pleased by Halo 2 Vista, it would be less than a page long.

There is no reason whatsoever to pay $50 for a mediocre three year old game. Especially one with such a slack port that people would rather use the controller to play it. If I want to be called a $$$$$$, and be informed of who my mother slept with last night, I'll just use my 360.

If some poor soul still wants to spend their money, Circuit City, the week after next, is giving away a free Shadowrun with every purchase of Halo 2 Vista, and Halo 2 Vista is $40 to boot.

Still not worth it to me, but maybe to someone else.

oh I have Vista Home Premium....... its still sitting in the box next to my alarm clock. It's not going to be installed til SP1 comes out OR my next system build.

Anyone pick this up with the CC Shadowrun deal this week? I enjoyed playing Halo 1 on the PC more than the Xbox, so if the game is stable, $20 per game is the price point I said I'd probaby get them.

Incidentally, I also want Compnay of Heroes and the Age of Empires expansion, so CC is getting all my spare $ this week.

so ive been testing my machine with vista x64 on a diff partition since yesterday....

im almost satisfied enough to fully upgrade to vista... drivers seem to be doing better and havent had any software probs yet..

i tried halo 2 trial mode and just briefly went through the first level.. graphics wont blow me away but halo 2 was still a fun game.. cant wait to play for achievements and try out the new maps

finally started playing... liking it so far... cool to see the live interface on the pc...

i think some ppl on here were being too harsh on this game...

i beat it on xbox but i dont mind playing through again in higher rez and with achievements..

gonna start playing with the map editor
