halo 3 for 49.99

Sorry, this might be a stupid question. I've never preordered anythng before. So, if I preorder this game, does it ship on the release date, or will it be shipped in such a way that I receive it on the release date?

I mean it's possible that some retail outlets will have Halo 3 for $49.99 on release date, so I wouldn't want to have to wait for it to arrive to me when I could run out and buy it and play it when it first comes out, and miss out on my friends co-oping and so on.
 
I might do this. Can anyone give some feedback on the site? Or have a superior alternative? Thanks.

I pre-ordered Blue Dragon from Familyvideo and they shipped it out on 8/28, which was the release date. The game arrived today. It does take a few days with the $.99 shipping.
 
OK, I figured as much. That might be fine for some games, but games like Halo 3 are the kind most people will want to have on the release date. With 4 player coop I'll just be missing out while every else I know will probably beat the game. I think I'd rather buy it in a store.
 
I've heard a ton of horror stories about Familyvideo.com & Outpost.com (aka Fry's).

They're not too good at getting a game to you in the first week it is released unfortunately.
