Has anyone heard any results on the AMD Spider platform?

A little bit ago I heard about AMD has made a new PC platform called The Spider.

It uses the all AMD/ATI chipsets and all the components work together more efficiently. Its the new Phenom Quad core processors, the Radeon 3800 series, and AMD 7-series chipsets. I was just wondering had seen any performance results on it and how well it ran when compared to some of the Intel stuff.

I haven't seen too much. The phenoms have been a real dissapointment and are slow compared to even the slowest of Intel's CPUs. The new GPU's are supposed to be pretty good and can hold their own against the 8800GT. It's a little slower, but also costs a little less. As horrible as Phenom is turning out to be though, I'm sure that Spider Platform is likely to get killed by anything Intel has.

That too bad I like AMD and was hoping this was going to turn out to be good. O well looks like Ill be staying with Intel for a while. But I think Im gonna get one of the 3800's from ATI.

It's not quite that cut and dry. The Phenom 9500 was on par with Intel's Q6600 in Crysis benchmarks. That's a big deal considering the 9500 is a $190 chip and the Q6600 is a $275 one.

In Oblivion the benchmarks show the 9600 ($240) on par with the Q6600.

In HL2 and UT3, the results are heavily in Intel's favor.

Basically this situation is coming down to price. Intel lacks any quad core CPUs under the Q6600's $275 price tag, while the Phenoms have the potential to mine the more mainstream market. We can only hope that AMD prices the upcoming Phenoms competitively. (So far only the 9500 and the 9600 have been released.)

Here's the Anandtech review of the Phenom chips (however, note that the prices mentioned for the Phenom 9500/9600 have since dropped).

Yeah, the phenoms are somewhat competative in GPU intensive applications. That's really a great way to sell it. If you look at the rest of the review in every CPU intensive application the Phenom 9900 was either get beat or barely keeping up with the Q6600. Since the 9900 is the Phenom's top processor, not released yet and will cost way more than the the Q6600 it's proving to be just what I said, the Phenom is a major flop. Especially if you consider that by the time the 9900 is even available there will be reasonably priced penryns available that will simply just kill it. It's pretty bad when your top CPU struggles against your competitors last year model when the new competition is ready to be released. Let's face it, AMD is underperforming and is in serious trouble here.
