Hastings $100 giftcard with PS3 purchase

Didn't see this posted yet, and not sure how many people have Hastings store nearby, but for the next week they're offering a $100 giftcard with the purchase of a PS3. Combine that with the recent mark down to 500, and the 5 free Blu-Ray movies, and you've actually got a decent deal on a PS3.

Any idea what would happen if you bought it, got the free gift card, then returned the PS3?...... I mean, they can't exactly force you to give it back, can they?..... what if you'd already used it?

www.gohastings.com is their website. However, the PS3 is in-store only. Go to their weekly store ad on the website and you can view the deal.

Edit: It appeas on the add that the PS3 is 599.99, however when I went in today it rang up as 499.99. Mkernan, I have no idea.

Boy, I have some bad timing, lol....I bought mine from Hastings LAST week. :p Stupid trade-ins bringing temptation....

Score!

There's one twenty minutes away from here.

Unfortunately I'm doing some cooking this evening.

If you look at the receipt, is it glaringly obvious that the gift card was free with the system? Just wondering how feasible it would be to return it and keep the gift card. I know from first hand experience (working there years ago) that their POS system isn't very advanced; just wondering if it would even tip them off.

It is OK to get in on a deal, heck great. But to scam the store? Come on... That is just plain wrong. If you want the $100 gift card and want to keep it, keep the playstation 3. They are already giving you a great deal and you want to pound them in the a@@?
hopefully this deal comes to cc's and bb's black friday
Yeah I'm hoping for something like this on blackfriday..

Its not *really* a scam if they _let_ me do it....... I'm not saying its on the up and up, but it sure would be nice. Unfortunately, the PS3 is still a little too rich for my blood, otherwise I'd totally jump on it (and keep it).

Returning the system and using the card later sounds like a scam to me. But your internal conscience might vary.

Anyway, hoping that they still have some for sale when I get a chance to check.

I guess I'm just curious whether they adjust the price of the PS3 down to $399 to compensate for ringing up the $100 gift card?..... What's your receipt show?

I'd imagine, that like most stores, if you don't return the card in full, or use some of it and return it, they take it off of the money that you get back when you return the system.

When a store offers some seriously legit deals, why do you guys even think about ripping them off? Rip of the asshole companies, not the genuinely awesome ones.

626, 637, and 693...

The number of miles away the 3 closest stores are to me :(

I'm hoping for some kind of deal like this at BB around the holidays (I have some giftcards there).

hmm. 80 miles for me. 160 round trip. That's about $15 in gas plus at least 2 hours. With tax at around $40 that gives me $45 free on the gift card. Is that worth 2 hours? probably.

here is an idea. if the gift card is given at time of purchase. buy a system and get the card. leave send your wife in with your gift card. buy a system using your card. (might be obvious might not) when she comes out take her card and your ps3 back in and return it.

ps3 for 399 and no gift card bother.

maybe a little shady but no theft involved. I dont feel bad buying something twice when they offer a better deal but wont honor a price match and returning one with the first reciept.

oh well. good luck if someone wants to try this. let us know if this works for anyone. my closest shop is 80 miles away and probably not worth this trouble.

Just got one of the PS3s from Hastings for 499 plus a free 100 dollar gift card here in Indiana. The gift card has to be used on a separate order from the system (i.e. can't use the giftcard for extra $100 off the PS3). Hooked it up to the projector with HDMI playing Ninja Gaiden and it looks wicked sweet. Got the 5 free Blu-Ray discs coming as well. Great deal for anyone close to a Hastings.

If you look at the receipt, does it show the price of the PS3 adjusted down to $399 to compensate for ringing up the gift card or anything like that? Does it look like there is anything on the receipt that explicitly ties the gift card to the sale of the PS3?

Nice deal... tempting, esp. with the 5 free movies. Just bought an Elite.... MUST RESIST....

Damn, if there was a single PS3 game I wanted to play (not looking for a flame war, just talking my opinion), I'd be there.

this is so tempting!!! i just found out (thx to the store locator) that there's one 36 miles from here. even though there's no games i'm interested in atm, one of the blockbusters around here has blu-ray movies in-store for rent.

I work at Hastings, and most returns on hardware over about $50 or so is usually given to the current sales manager to deal with. Returns on hardware are only allowed within 7 days, and only for the same item. You may not recieve your cash back unless you really bitch and moan, in which case they'll look up the sale and contact the store manager -- and then you may have a very small chance of it. But most likely they would require you to bring back the gift card. Or they'd just cancel the card, since they can see the ID # of the card on the receipt & sales transaction.

Sorry to burst your bubbles

This deal has actually been going on for a few weeks now, and I've yet to see a PS3 sold in that time. And my department is the Music/Video Game department, so I'd know.

So couldn't you just spend entire balance of the gift card, return the PS3 (unopened obviously) for a refund, and tell them to just cancel the giftcard because you forgot to bring it back in?

mkernan maybe you should be looking for a deal on a "life", because it looks like you need one you scamming retard.

not worth driving 1 hour each way for this thing..

hastings stores are typically located out in the sticks

It comes out to 499 + tax (about $540 here in texas) and the giftcard can only be used at hastings. Net price is $440 + gas for initial trip + gas for subsequent trips to use gift card....ugh.

for the PS3 says 499, and the giftcard is rung up separate (on the same receipt), then discounted as a promotional deal.

This deal sucked me into getting the PS3 today. Drove 70 miles round trip (all highway miles.) Fortunately traffic wasn't too bad and my 12 yo son and I had a chance to chat.

It seemed a decent deal if you're getting a second controller and a game anyway. We basically got the PS3, extra controller and Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion for $510 + $50 tax = $560 total.

FYI - The receipt shows:

Gift Card $100
Auto Coupon - $100
PS3 Sony System $499.98

So they add and then subtract the gift card on the receipt.

With the recent price drop and word out that future PS3 won't have the emotion chip this deal seemed like it might be the best around for a while. If you live far from any Hastings you should really use the $100 gift card while there to save later hassle.

Now I'm off to pick the 5 Blu Ray discs : )

You'd have to have the receipt to get a refund, and the receipt would have the card # on it. If they went into the screen where you cancel the card, it also shows the card history -- meaning it shows when it was issued/by who. It also shows the amount remaining on the card, and where and when the card was used (store # or online).

Though I'm sure you could slip past someone if they weren't quite paying attention, or didn't care. But really, you need to find a past time rather than trying to pull a quick one on stores like this. If you put the effort you do into trying to come up with scams, you could probably make more money than you would by pulling a quick one on someone.

Wish I had known this...the Hastings I bought it from the other week mentioned nothing of the sort, and I just exited with a $500 PS3. :p (Only bought it there because of some in-store credit from a trade-in, lol)
I probably would've bit, if they hadn't closed the Hastings in town down a few years ago! :bomb:
They closed the Hasting in Normal? That was the only Hasting I ever been too.. :( sad.. brought back the memories :(

If anyone has a Hastings in there town, Best Buy will price match them plus you would be entitled to reward zone points. I have not bought mine but the 100 dollar gift card is tempting me to get one.

An employee who had just seen me buy the last one today didn't realize that I had re-entered the store to spend the gift card and he proceeded to tell me about how I "missed out" on the deal. It was printed on the 1-day sale flyer for Saturday, but it very clearly said that it was valid until the 28th (or something).

I would've turned around and spent it on their last Wii (yes, they had one), but I didn't want to risk finding one with a D2C drive chip or a D2B chip with cut legs. My personal Wii has been secured since launch. ;)

I've tried to PM things like that and been shot down. I thought they just didn't do that, so I chose not to try even though the Summer of Entertainment promo is going on. So, has Best Buy ever PMed a "free _ with purchase" deal for you? Did I mess up?

hmm only 2757 miles to the nearest one. i better start paddling..haha
but really too bad theres not one around. i probably wouldve bit considering the ee being taken out soon.

Not at all! There are difficult and impossible to mod Wiis floating around. I made a data cable for my Wii to connect to my PC and patch the drive code so I imported Mario Strikers Charged a couple months ago. Unfortunately, it actually has VERY low import compatibility and most compatible games will require you to dump, modify, and burn them. The firmware updates on the games do not check your region and can cause problems (a newer game with a newer US update on the disc will fix the problems)! Hell, the chips to do it without a PC only cost $5.99 in packs of five (I've got two left).

That's not to say that the Wii is rock-solid. My launch unit died within nine hours of my friend Zelda Twilight Princess (I had a 12hr shift at work that Sunday). It no longer read discs and would lock up when launching any channel.

Yeah, it was the only one I had been to as well.

The only good that came of the closing was them clearancing out a lot of stuff. I ended up with a ton of PS1 games (Rival Schools!) and some DVD's.

CZRoe,

Best Buy's policy at there website states they can price match. If they have problems, please speak with a manager. Here is what I found at there webiste.

How do you handle a price match if the competitor's price includes a rebate, gift card or other promotional offer?
The competitor's net purchase price is calculated by deducting instant discounts taken at the register such as instant rebates. Mail-in rebates and other deferred savings are not deducted from the competitor's purchase price.

What this means is they should ring up the console for 399.99 and sell you a gift card for 100 dollars. Best Buy can't sell give you a card for free on the receipt but it still rings up for 499.99 either way.

That statement does not saying anything about they not price matching. If they still give you problems then call the main phone number for Best Buy. I have called my Best Buy and they will. It really depends on who you talk with but do not take no for an answer.
