The thing is SEGA is not even trying when they put Phantasy Star Online. What is so great about PSO is the game itself plays like a Regular Phantasy Star or even Zelda. PSOffline is the Phantasy Star equivelent to Zelda: OOT.
Phantasy Star Online dosen't play anything like the Phantasy Star games. A lot of people, myself included would really like a real Phantasy Star. (Although maybe not, given Sega's recent record of destroying great series.
It depends on how narrowly you define it. Even if you include things like Diablo II and Phantasy Star Online as MMORPGs, they're clearly not the same thing as World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy 12 or Everquest.
Personally I don't think Diablo II or Guild Wars or Phantasy Star Online count as MMORPGs, as most of the gameplay is just standard online, not a large world you're exploring with other people. It's basically a chat system integrated with a normal multiplayer game.
Huh? I think most people would disagree with that. They're not really even the same genre, but WoW is just amazing compared to anything I've seen in PSO.

On the topic of MMORPG's there is no such thing. It is an RPG or not an RPG. PSO did the job of a MMORPG very well. Where you can just hang around and chat, play ball in the ball room, raom the world of PSO, gain various items, and even build a relationship. Yes going into a game is limited to a party of four but at least it is diffrent everytime you go.

WOW, FF11, and EverQuest is a joke when compared to PSO.
