Have you guys ever make a profit off a clearance?

By profit I mean maybe bought a game at a KMart clearance where you got maybe a game for 8 bucks and then sold it to a person or a store like gamestop? I been looking at these deals and been wondering if there was a way to make a profit.

No way. It also does not have the nickname "flipping", and making profits off of cheap items definitely do not have whole websites dedicated to the act of "flipping".

Excuse me? I really didnt get what you said. Are you saying this site is against anyone who tries to make a profit of a cheap game they bought at a clearance?

Absolutely.

i believe he was using what we here call "sarcasm". Remove "no" and "not" from his post to unlock the magical truth.

Wow didnt realize that, But I dont see what the fuzz is to make a profit off a game you bought at a clearance? I mean I could understand if you stole the game or something. Isnt this what the stores do to us. Buy products at cheap prices and sell them to us to make a huge profit.

No way. Stores barely break even. Especially Gamestop. Their trade-in values are fair and just and they don't make a profit at all on used games.

Doing this and talking too much about it is frowned upon here at CAG. To answer your question some of us do flips. I use to do it all the time but I stopped because it gets time consuming plus you will end up spending more time flipping then playing the games you were out trying to get.

You haven't been here long enough to get a crash course in the easy way to do this. You need to be able to contribute for a while before getting a breakdown on how.

I always laugh when people new to the site always try to find out how to do this when they first get here instead of just enjoying the deals they can partake in.

There's nothing wrong with it, and it's perfectly legal. However, some stores (like BlockBuster) will ban you from trading in games if you're trading in massive amounts.

Also, some Gamestops won't let you trade in 2 of the same game for the same system depending on the trade promotion.

Yeah, like new games with 50% trade-in value and 95% resell value.

Fuzz?

At the last B2g1 free sale at Gamestop you can do it in-store:

Pokemon Plat $29.99 ($53.99 for 3) ---> $18TIV $27x3=$81 ($9 profit)
GTA Chinatown $29.99 ($53.99 for 3) ---> $20TIV $30x3=$90 ($12 profit)
NSMB $29.99 ($53.99 for 3) ---> $17.50TIV $26.25x3=$78.75 ($8.25 profit)
Prof Layton $26.99 ($48.58 for 3) ---> $20TIV $30x3=$90 ($13.81 profit)

Couple that with the fact that some people (flippers) are making numerous stops at gamestops throughout the day anyway to buy stuff they can effectively clear ~$42 at each store if they can find the above games in quantity. Also the fact that most flippers buy solely on credit it's essentially free money by working the system. I would assume a flipper could hit 20-25 stores on each day and probably do this at maybe half the stores (because you can't buy the same games you trade-in for the most part) and your looking at risk free $500 profit each day, plus all the flips that they would buy anyway (which they would probably earn 40-50% margins depending on the title) and it adds up for a weekend's worth of work (plus the time to sell it).

I've never tried flipping before but if I did I could see making $3000 to $4000 for the weekend (fri, sat, sun) when it was all said and done (after selling it all). It would be nice to know what all the flippables are, is there a list on CAG? I mean there has to be some people on this board that flip games???????????????

I've never flipped. I personally enjoy buying games when they get to clearance and playing them. When a new game comes out I don't run out and buy it because my backlog is so huge I just can't justify adding to it. I think I still have games over 2 years old I need to play.

I personally think hoarders and flippers should be burned at stake for taking all of our good CAG's clearance games. If you get multiples, they should only be used to help a brotha out. :) Plus ebay's fees are way too high, but CAG's trading forum has no fees.

I used to hoard. My records show me making a lot of money for eBay, Paypal and the USPS. If I had made as much profit as any of those three, I'd probably still be hoarding and making enough money to quit my day job.

I'll go back to reselling stuff for a profit in the near future, but it won't be video games with their puny margins.

I've never tried flipping that way. Working the stores like that would feel really trashy...I'd probably give up half way through and feel pretty slimy. Selling to people who are willing to buy on ebay is providing a convenience to those who are willing to pay, reselling to a store for profit would get you banned. There's no way you could hit up stores all over town without them catching on to you.

Hint: employees at stores in close proximity, even in the same region, are all friends, and they all talk about customers, and if you're a regular, they know you and they talk about the bizarre pick ups you make, which are obviously for ebay/flipping. They don't care about that, but you'd get banned from every store in the area if they knew you were scamming them.

anyway, for basically the past 5 years or so, I've heavily supplemented all my income with flipping. Using deals on this site, as well as stores and sales that I hadn't told anyone about, I've been able to make at least a couple hundred a month, sometimes a grand or more. Sometimes a couple grand around christmas time. I've been fortunate to have flexible work schedules so that I can hit places early (target, sears.) and good enough at it to not need a regular job at times (while at school.) I'm selling my last batch on ebay and amazon this weekend, then I'm done, since I'm moving to the city, and don't feel like hunting down flippable games any more/won't have a car there. I'm getting too old and lazy for this. And everybody is a seller these days...there aren't nearly as many flippable games as there once were. The industry is better about reprinting and the market is crowded, and finding older PS1 and SNes games at decent prices is tougher in my area. But its been fun and profitable! and I've hardly paid for games at all really since joining (on my original account.)

Thanks CAG :twisted:

Once there was a massive clearance at Toys R Us (games up to 90% off meaning many were $1-2) that coincided with an EBgames promotion that had a bonus $5 store credit per trade-in. You do the math :).

I found a sandwich in my car and I thought it would have gone up in value but unfortunately it had only become moldy.

The conservative sandwich heavy portfolio didn't pay off, zoidberg

When I was at TRU and saw people trying to buy up every game we had in stock that was on sale I always told them that was all we had but left a half dozen of each in the stockroom for the guests who wanted individual copies.

yea i think gamestop had the deal that trade in 3 games, and get fight night round 4 free. I don't like fight nights anymore, b/c i like MMA. SO i traded in FNR4. So i traded in games that i would have got 10 dollars for from gamestop, but in stead i made a profit of 30 dollars, NICE!!!
