Havest Moon, how is it?

CAGiversary!
Hey, I'm thinking about buying another GC game, which I haven't done for almost a year. I sold all of the ones I used to have, except Animal Crossing, so now you know my taste. So now my question: is Harvest Moon any good? I heard it was like it was like AC, and then I heard it wasn't. But even if it isn't, it still looks like I'd like it. So could yall explain just how it plays and if it is like AC?

it is like AC in some ways, and unlike it in others. it is a good game and I have cows and chickens and ducks and goat and dog and child and wife and fruit, and hobo caveman best friend, and horse, and tall trees.

Harvest Moon is great, and although the concept may seem similar to those who don't really envelope themselves in this type of game, they really aren't too similar. Sure, you live in a town, interact socially with those around you, and try to "make it to the top" so to speak. In Animal Crossing, you accomplish such by collecting all there is to collect, and by participating in the special events. The same could be said for Harvest Moon, and despite the "cutesy" exterior, at its core Harvest Moon is an economics sim. Upgrading your farm and your tools yields more successful results. [Note:I am explaining this as though you have never played a Harvest Moon game before, so forgive me if I am breaking it down too far].

In Animal Crossing, you don't really have very many consequences for unaccomplished tasks. You take your time, do what you feel like, and can spend an entire day digging holes looking for treasure. However, in Harvest Moon time is your enemy. Your goal is to create a successful routine and balance your time evenly. You have crops to tend, animals to take care of, and even a family to raise. Spend the whole day watering your crops, your cow may be pissed and give you poor quality milk. Too focused on your animals? Miss too many watering cycles on your crops and they will wilt away.

Then there is the matter of the family. Not only do you have to tend the crops and take care of the animals, but you have to keep the wife happy and make sure you aren't neglecting your child. Harvest Moon is a series based on timing and taking your real life away. What I am trying to say is that it is very time consuming. Just because you like Animal Crossing doesn't mean you'll like Harvest Moon, but you'll be more open minded to it. The game has a slow start, but once you get a solid routine going, learn what crops grow in what season, learn recipes, how to cross-breed seeds, throw in some fishing, take care of all your animals, pace yourself and make sure no one gets sick, you are golden. It takes a lot of good balancing skills =)

There is a ton more that could be said about Harvest Moon, but I am trying to be brief, and if you have any other questions I'd be more than happy to answer them. It's a good game, good series, and definitely worth taking a look at...but it's not for everyone.

But it's not in real-time, right? Cuz there's no way I could keep up with all that everyday in real life, no way.

when this game goes cheap I will pick it up. A local shop has the GBA version with a beat up box for 19.00. when it get marked down a little I may pick that up before the GCN version

Well, I was thinking about getting this game only for GC. But is the GBA ver. worth getting? And what are the connectivity exlusives like, or are there any at all?

Its not real time.. If you saved at xx:xx o clock on day x It would load as that.

This is a very great game.. Although it is very complicated for a harvest moon game.. Not too complicated tho..

Apparently the Harvest Moon series has become more complicated since HM3.. >_<

Harvest Moon is a great game imo.

IMHO, the GBA version is definitely worth getting. It's what got me hooked on the GBA on the first place. There's tons to do in your 24 minute days. (My only problem with it is that it has a bunch of random typos, but it's not a big deal, just weird.) And there are some extra perks by connecting it to the GC version (though I don't know what they are since I don't own that yet). According to descriptions, characters from the GBA and GC version can go to each others worlds and extra events can happen, etc.

I was initially talking about the one for GC, but I didn't think of the PS2 one till now. The GC version got slightly better scores at gamerankings.com, but the word of the ppl would also be a good reference. Which do yall think is better?

Avoid the PS2 version at all costs. The n64, the snes, the PSX, the GC, and the GBA versions are all vastly superior.

Just more proof that gamesranking scores are a stupid way look at video games.

I am a true harvest moon fan, since the snes days and this game is a bit of a let now. The graphic are amazing the characters and setting are perfect. But the animal system is a little weird, like the cow system. The game is broken up into 6 chapters, each one spanning a certain amount of years, after the first chapter you get married automatically which is a bit of a let down since theres no challenge in getting a girl. You can buy just about everything in the game by chapter 2 with a tree trick that isnt a glitch, after this the game becomes fairly repetitve like most harvest moon games. You might enjoy it since it will be more difficult for you not having played a harvest moon game, but overall you will feel the repetitveness soon enough. This is in no way like animal crossing by the way.
