Having problems joining your friends games on XBL? Click Here to Fix it! V1.1

Weird for me that when I created a static IP address and port forwarded the XBL ports I got Moderate NAT, but if I used DHCP and UPnP I got Open NAT. Oh well, if it works...

Okay.. I tried to change my NAT settings to fit the 360. To find my IP address, I just went to "Edit Settings" in the Systems Blade and looked at the IP Address. I went to put that in the NAT UDP/TCP, and it said "Server IP must be LAN Address"

Any help? Am I using the wrong IP address from my 360?

I assume there is no need to do this if you do the Test Connection and your NAT already comes up as "OPEN" and everything else is confirmed fine?
Any answer to this? I don't want to mess with settings if I'm already good to go.

Ok, I have decided that this is my final chance. I am trying to connect my Modem to the Netgear router, and either the Xbox 360 directly, or an old Linksys BEFSR41 router I had lying around. The Netgear router is connected by Coax cable. I remember my old Linksys router used to be able to be hooked up via Ethernet on the router. My question is if it is possible to do the ethernet connection to one router and Coax to the other router at the same time?

UPDATE: It detect an IP address from the Linksys router, but fails at DNS. Anyway to get it to work? My computer plugged into the Linksys router also cannot connect to the internet.

If your NAT is already Open then don't do anything. If it ever becomes Moderate or even worse Strict then you will want to do this.
Still need answer to my Q. My NAT was Open, then it turned to strict.
IP address are forever changing. One day it may be Open the Next Strict or Moderate. You need to setup a static IP on your 360 so it doesn't change and will always use the same IP Address.

Okay, I have a small problem. Whenever I test my Xbox Live connection with Automatic, and then check the IP, it is always something like: 192.168.0.250. It always has that "0" as the third group of the number. Anyhow, my computer IP is 192.168.1.2. So, I set my Xbox360 connection to an IP of like 192.168.1.100. Now, I then go to my Router's settings and then set the Ports all to this ip: 192.168.1.100.

Now, whenever I go to test for Xbox Live, it says my IP failed. Any reasons as to why?

Since it didn't work, I just changed everything in the Network Settings back to Automatic. Then, I tested xbox live connection again. I got the IP that the Xbox360 got and then tried to put that IP in the boxes for the Port Forwarding. It told me that it can only connect to a LAN IP or something.

I was having no luck whatsoever in getting my NAT to be "Open" even after following the procedures in this thread. I was able to get it to "Moderate" from "Strict" by doing the static IP address. I assumed it was the router because it wouldn't even let me VPN into work from my house. So I went and swapped out the router that was installed with the pre-wiring in my house and lo and behold, NAT is now Open without having to configure a static IP address and the VPN connection works fine. My router was an OnQ/Legrand/Grayfox which might only be used in this region (Western Pennsylvania) by this installer, but it shows you that sometimes the type of router you have can screw everything up regardless of your settings. So if you continue to have problems I suggest picking up a new router and trying that out.

We just moved & now have DSL Pro from AT&T. We have a 2Wire Wireless Gateway that will not recognize my Xbox 360. I can not pass the IP Address test. How do I get the gateway to recognize my gaming adaptor? I have a Linksys Gaming Adaptor that is properly hooked up just the way it was before I moved. We used to have cable. Can someone help me out with IP, DNS, & other stuff that is involved with this internet stuff? Thanks in advance.

Maybe you need to check to see if the DHCP setting is correct on both your modem and router. They should be set so that the router/modem automatically assigns an IP address.
You should try posting in the 360 thread. You might get a few more reponses.

This really should be stickied. I'm going to have to try this out. Every so often I can't connect and when I test it's because my IP address failed. I never understand why.

I'm just afraid I'm going to try this and nothing will work and I'll be w/o a connection for a day or so  I just have that kind of luck :whistle2:(

Here is the quick and dirty:

The 2wire has no UPnP so you will have to open the following ports in your firewall: UDP: 3074, TCP: 3074, UDP: 88. You need to type in http://192.168.1.254 into your browser to access the Firewall Rules (you may have to use IE vs. FireFox). If you are using the wireless leave your encryption off while you are configuring the router. Have the Xbox 360 search for available networks (by default it is called 2Wire -- Change it to something else if possible). Once it finds it connect and test your connection through the Xbox system blade. If all is dandy, enable your router security (use the option with WPA AND WPA2), and create a password (PSK = Pre Shared Key). Now find your network again via the Xbox 360 and it will ask for your PSK. Once it is saved you should be up and running.

Later,

Alex
Hello CAG's. I know some of you are having trouble joining friends while on Xbox Live. The reason? Your ports may not be open. Here is a simple guide on how to fix this slight problem so you can enjoying gaming with your friends without any of these "Connnection Problems". This guide is intended to make your NAT on your Xbox 360 go from Moderate or Worse to Open. Open being a very good thing.

~*~Making a Static IP Address on your Xbox 360~*~

Ok here you will need a some info from your computer. Go to Start

Got a few problems w/ xbl and my network setup. I used to use a WRT54G and everything worked fine w/ upnp. That WRT54G died and I replaced it with a cisco871w that i used for labs.

Problem 1: When I try to connect to xbox live right when i startup, the xbox it fails to connect. I have to run through the "Test Connection" and then I am able to connect. Annoying but whatever it works.

Problem 2: When I do Test Connection NAT shows up moderate. The router is running cbac with these configs...
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 cuseeme
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 ftp
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 h323
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 icmp
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 netshow
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 rcmd
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 realaudio
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 rtsp
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 esmtp
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 sqlnet
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 streamworks
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 tftp
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 tcp
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 udp
ip inspect name INSPECTION1 vdoliv

And nat to the xbox looks like this. If anyone knows any more ports to forward or a certain protocol to inspect tell me because its annoying not being able to connect to 15-20% of games that aren't hosted by me
ip nat inside source list 1 interface FastEthernet4 overload
ip nat inside source static tcp 10.10.10.200 3074 interface FastEthernet4 3074
ip nat inside source static udp 10.10.10.200 3074 interface FastEthernet4 3074
ip nat inside source static udp 10.10.10.200 88 interface FastEthernet4 88

Thanks in advance.

Are you able to stream music/video to your xbox 360?

I can see my xbox on wmp 11 but my xbox 360 can't detect my computer.

My xbox live works ok, it works ok on auto, i can't get it to work on manual ip. So i think that might be the cause with the ports.

i called xbox and they're saying belkin is incompatible and there should be an update coming from them. who knows when thats coming.

i'm using xp home sp 2 and windows media 11 with this exact router.

thanks

God I remember this. About 2 months ago I got completely fed up with the Belkin router being complete garbage and bought the Zyxel Router instead. It's amazing. It does everything without configuring anything. Straight outta the box it amazing. Do yourself a favor and shoot the Belkin.

In other news I have a Belkin Router for sale.... $30? Anyone? Damnit...

dangit, i have a belkin :(

I still never got around to selling my other one on Ebay. Not sure how much I would get for it anywho's. Will accept trades for it. Prolly only worth Barbie's Horse Trainer for the Wii or something...

I've spent over an hour now trying to get this thing to work on three different xbox consoles with no luck. I am copying all the settings from other connected wireless devices that are having no issue connecting (psp, ps3, wii, ds and laptop). I've copied the settings verbatim (except for the IP address). I've tried two different WEP keys. It connects to the router but always fails at the IP test. I don't get what I am doing wrong. Any ideas?

I had the exact same problem. I solved it by switching to the wired connection, because I'd recently moved my router into the room where I keep my games anyway. I was having my problem with an old-school original XBox wireless adapter, so I was guessing perhaps it was because that was an 802.11b or maybe even an 802.11a device, and I wasn't entirely certain whether in either case it would be compatible with my new Belkin N Router. Also, I have Comcast, which was providing me with a terrible connection around the time things were acting up, so that may have been the cause of my problems as well. I know my fix of plugging into the router probably won't help you, but perhaps you've got something in common with one of those potential problems and can do something with that info. Good luck.

Not that it makes any sense what-so-ever but I had this same problem with my Linksys wireless bridge (WET11) that I use and I had to reset and leave the bridge name as the default "Linksys" (I was trying to use meaningful names like XBOX, Consoles, etc)....I told you it made absolutely no sense but it was 100% repeatable even after firmware update and connecting to a Linksys wireless router (WRT54GS).

2 things either share:

1. A name
2. An IP address
3. A DNS

find out which and change it on the router and you should be good to go (prolly DNS)

also..make sure the light on the wireless adapter is green when you turn the console on
Thanks again PimpInc...I had to dig this thread up since my router had to be changed out...worked like a charm.
No Problem. Maybe we should sticky this thread ;)

I have it linked in the OP of the General FAQ's thread. We already have too many stickies as it is. I'm going to see if I clear the clutter within the next few days.

I have a NAT question. My NAT goes between open and moderate randomly.

I have a static IP set up and the 3 ports I needed are open UDP 88, UDP 3074 and TCP 3074.

Am I missing anything else I need to keep the NAT open?

Does your router have a DMZ option? If so, place your xbox static ip in the dmz. This will place it outside your firewall, and your NAT will remain open.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does, will doing this put me in any particular security risk?

Theoretically, no. It is what most people use to make sure your Xbox has a direct net connection. There is always a bit of a risk leaving anything out in the DMZ (non protected) part of your network however, so it is not guaranteed.

Other options are available here:

Thanks. I'm going to test out using the DMZ thing, but like I said it seems random when it moves from open to moderate.

Does anyone here use this? I just installed it on my new linksys wrt54g router. After hours of tweaking, reading guides, and more tweaking of the settings I finally got it to work...sort of. I can connect to xbl, but after a few minutes I loose connection and than have to log in again. If anyone can help me set it up properly I would greatly appreciate it.
I'm having trouble staying connected to XBL also. Maybe your set up is ok and it is XBL that's going in and out.
ohh, maybe. I hope.

Yeah XBL is having all kinds of problems this week, I wouldn't bother messing with any router settings until it gets back to normal.
