Looks like Best Buy has another whizbang promo for next week:

"I just got the heads up on next weeks promo. The 360 add-on will be selling at its new price of 179.99 with the remote, King Kong, and a free copy of 300. This coupled with the five free movies offer should hopefully entice many of the fence sitters to jump on board. "

Not sure how reliable this is but its worth mentioning...too bad Speedy couldn't give us the heads up this time

Wow, nice....maybe this is some new promo soon. Amazon is selling a similiar bundle (with the ELITE though). So, it's not THAT similiar I suppose.
Is the King Kong promo still so widely available or is that part YMMV?
Apparently you don't know anything. King Kong is/was bundled with the HD-DVD player in box. So no it's not YMMV.

Apparently, you don't know how to read. That sticker says "Limited Time Offer."

So again, is the King Kong part YMMV?

I believe all the HD-DVD drives still have King Kong and the remote. There should be a sticker on the box if you buy it in store.

To my knowledge and store sightings, there hasn't been any HD DVD drives seen or sold without King Kong. So its safe to say, its not YMMV

Every HD DVD drive I have seen has included King Kong. So $180 for a HD DVD player and 7 movies is a pretty good deal. Even if you don't like 300 (like me), you can still sell it for about $25 or so here or on Ebay as MSRP is $35. Not too bad.
Argh, if a reward zone 12% off coupon pops up, I just might get this...
I don't think those work with the Add-ons...Do they? They are not 'hardware' but in a sense they are. I guess it would be YMMV. It does say 'Not valid on HD DVD Players' though.

even the restocks in my area have had KK and the remote

i was kind of hoping there would be a new batch with a better movie actually, but i dug through a big stack at Fry's and they were all the same.. down the ones on the floor

this is a great damn deal, btw

every time i decide not to jump in to HD format land yet, something like this pops up

*bo-oing*

They may have changed their coupon from a while back, but I used a BB 12% off coupon when I bought mine for $200.
Anyone think they will pricematch there deal if you bought it early? I know CC does but not sure if BB would and i want 300 bad.
Oh good idea. I will definitely try this. I dont see why it wouldnt work. I got in on the $149.99 price mistake there too so makes the deal even sweeter.

Great deal, almost as good as the $150 "mistake", except for the fact 300 is a combo disc. I'm not sold on the quality of combo discs after having trouble with a rented 300 (I know it was a rental but the disc was in good shape).

I'm just not that excited about purchasing HD-DVDs with the studios dragging their feet on managed copy, plus because how much they burnt me on re-issues on DVDs. At least I skipped VHS for the most part. . .

This is a sweet deal!

I want to get it but.....

what is going to happen if blue ray wins and we are all collecting hd dvd's?

and vice versa??

My plan is to just netflix until whoever wins or whatever happens happens. Free DVDs on the other hand I am fine with keeping.;)

Nothing...its not like your HD DVD's will stop playing...you can always view them in their HD glory.

Don't forget you can use the 20% TRU coupon this week to pick up the 360 HD-DVD drive for $144 + tax. Then pick up 300 for $34.99 at best buy or cheaper at amazon, if you really want it.

I was just about to try to switch over to Blu-Ray and then this comes along. Maybe if I can find a coupon, I might jump on board, even though I just bought 300 on regular DVD.

However, I'm having a problem deciding if I should make the leap to HD. Right now I have an upconvert DVD player with an HDMI cable and the sales rep. at Circuit City told me that with my TV (Polaroid 32" HD), I wouldn't notice a difference between HD and what I have now. I find that hard to believe. Anybody have further information about HD format VS upconvert with HDMI?

To anybody thinking of jumping on this deal, consider selling the free DVDs on Ebay. Each one (even Dukes of Hazzard) goes for at least 15 bucks, although with more and more people buying HD for this deal, there might be an overstock of these DVDs online. Either way, though, you should be able to get at least 50-75 dollars for the movies.
Blah. Nevermind.

I wonder how much money you could get by selling all 7 DVDs...Unless King-Kong doesn't come in an actual case.
It does come in an actual case. But the market is already quite flooded with HD DVD's of king kong.

King Kong does come in an official HD DVD red case, its got no UPC code though. I'd say you can get about $15 per HD DVD...so around $100-120.

Most people are getting $15 for each of the 'free' HD DVDs. Kong will get you $12, 300 maybe $25. Factor all that in to your decision.

I have a 32" Vizio. You won't notice a huge change, but the picture looks very clean.

I have a 32" Samsung, I used a HDMI upconverting DVD player and my HD DVD add on and the difference is uncanny.

why would someone in a retail store discourage you from buying stuff? then again, it is circuit "please don't post our ads so people will come to our stores" city. i've got a Sony Bravia 32" lcd and the diffence between upconverted dvd and hd-dvd is incomparable. one example being hot fuzz. the dvd side of the disk, you can't read any of the signs unless its way close up. however on the hd-dvd side, you can read the names of the stores a block down the street in the outdoor scenes.

With deals like these, does anyone know when they actually hit the stores? Will 300 be packaged with the HD DVD player? I'm assuming there will be quite a lot of interest in this and I would like to get my copy before any sold out issues.

Great deal, is this for only next week though? The bundle of king kong and 300 deal.

But I have a really n00b question. I don't have a LCD/HDTV yet, plan on getting one in the winter time. Would this look any different on a SDTV? Thanks to anybody that humbles themselves and answers this.

Depends on how far you sit from it.

Depends on if it is 1080p or not.

Depends on how important the better menus and content on HDDVD are to you.

If I could pick any 5 movies I want Id definately buy one but I just looked at the list and its a bunch of stuff Ive owned on dvd for years.
Woot. Just got 10-12% coupons.... $160 for player plus seven HD DVD's....
Where did you get this? I wouldn't mind getting a hold of one of those =)

Any chance this works online...since there is free shipping on that player? I haven't been able to get it to work.
damn, I don't have a 360 or a hdtv yet, and this is still pretty tempting
ditto. I would consider getting this deal and then waiting for the tvs and xbox360 to drop in price but by the time they do drop, then the the hd dvd add ons and all the hd dvds will be much cheaper as well.
Where did you get this? I wouldn't mind getting a hold of one of those =)
CAme in the mail yesterday., I think it's good for three days that week. Like, 21st-23rd or something.

If you do some searching online I found a coupon for 10% off that worked on the hd-dvd player when I got it last week. That plus the dvd 6000reward zone points(plus $5 I already had) brought my out of pocket cost to 40$. The box looks very nice without its UPC sitting next to my copy of The Matrix Trilogy I picked up for $20.

heh, deals like this make my efforts to sell my own HD Drive kinda pointless. to match the value of these deals I'd have to sell it for like $80
heh, deals like this make my efforts to sell my own HD Drive kinda pointless. to match the value of these deals I'd have to sell it for like $80
Well, i sold my used one - without UPC, without King Kong for $140 on ebay. This was after I went and bought a new one at BB 8/1 for $150 too, so 5 free movies were applicable.

I called and spoke with the manager at BB and asked them if they accept CC coupons to pricematch. He asked what the coupon was and I told him$40 off of a $200 purchase with certain restrictions. The manager said as long as what I was purchasing wasn't excluded on coupon he would honor it. I walked out with the HD-DVD player, 300, and some disney movies for my son to get my total at $200-$40-$23(returned 2 disc edition of 300)-$20 in RWZ coupon-$100GC + tax=$32 out of pocket. I was very happy.

Hrmm...well, today's announcement pretty much has me decided to get the HD-DVD add-on & be format agnostic (already have a PS3). My local GS has a couple of them used for $129.99. Take off 10% for the coupon that's floating around, and 10% for my Edge card (assuming they stack) and that should come to about $105. I'm also going to trade in my Ninja Gaiden Sigma w/ the bonus coupon before it expires, so that will take another $43 off the price ($30 + $3 Edge + $10 coupon). So just over $60 for the drive + tax.

Question is, is there any reason I wouldn't want to go this route? I know I wouldn't get the 5 free movies, but then none of them really appeal to me anyway. I wouldn't mind King Kong, but I've seen it used at local EB's and it's dirt cheap if I recall (should be, since it's the pack-in). The remote might be nice...but then, I've been meaning to break down & get a Harmony at some point anyway. So do the drives have any kind of failure history that would make buying used a bad idea? Or anything else I haven't thought of?

Ok, I have a dumb question. Does the 360 have to be on when I play the HDDVD player? The 360 is already fragile enough, I don't want to over work it by playing the HDDVD player...

Yes, but AFAIK is just idling - THe HD-DVD player does the work and uses the xbxo video outputs.
