The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

Dude, Toshiba loss 95% for q1 2008..lol..i doubt it will ever make it!!!
i got my hd-dvd 360 add on in late February and still haven't received my free movies. i think its coming up on 8 weeks now. how long did it take for you guys to get yours? is there a #/website i can use to see if its coming? thanks.
It takes forever, I also just got mine 2 weeks ago and I sent for them in December. The worst part is, they substituted 4 of the movies--4! I got Bulletproof , Serenity, Doom, and HP Order of the Phoenix instead of Pitch Black, Charlie & the C.F., the Frighteners (lesser of 3 evil choices), and Darkman. WTF? None of those movies were even options...it's like somebody in the warehouse just grabbed whatever was near and threw it in an envelope. All the UPCs were scratched off as well, as if I could return them somewhere. When I got my 5 free blu-rays with my PS 3 not only did I get all my original choices, but they were pristine as well...Oh well, guess I'll head over to Newbury comics and snag Goodfellas HD for $11 (used).

I picked up my hd-dvd xbox 360 drive last night at Target for $45 on clearance (not as good as the Kmart price, but still). Now I'm finding that HD-DVDs are gonna be a bitch to find offline (I'm hoping that some of the local Blockbusters still have movies for sale). Extremely late to the party it seems....

I was thinking the same thing. I want to fill put my collection a little more, but the inbline prices are not that great. Any B&M stores still stocking HD-DVDs?

Fry's if you have one near you still has a TON of HD DVDs. I am slowly filling mine up.

It really hasn't worked out the way many of us hoped, I think. I picked up my 360 drive when they hit $50. I envisioned having a very large collection, thanks to clearance sales. So far, I have about 20 movies (still waiting on my rebate movies), and I don't see it getting much larger. They are quickly disappearing from shelves, either because stores are shipping them back or rubes are buying them at 50% off retail+. Then, online, many of the movies I would be interested are no longer available at places like Amazon and DeepDiscount.

My Walmart still stocks a few newer titles. They have American Gangster for $17. I was hoping they'd get I Am Legend in for that price, but no dice. They don't have it at all.

I've been slowly finding movies here and there for pickup, though nothing like we thought it would be. Nothing since mid-Feb has been at retail, before that, it was only B1G1's.

Besides the Bourne Trilogy set and the Ultimate Matrix Collection, all I have really picked up are some of the ~$10 titles that have showed up on Amazon and DeepDiscount. Most certainly great deals, in my opinion, but still disappointing that we haven't seen some big clearance sales somewhere. I'm just hoping the stock of some of the online retailers stay big enough that there will be at least a few decent movies to pick if and when they finally decide to firesale them.

Received my 5 free HD-DVDs today sent in the form at the end of January. Received The Italian Job, Swordfish, and Black Rain as requested. The Thing was out of stock and was replaced by The Departed and Firewall was also out of stock and was replaced with Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
The only combo disc was Fast Times at Ridgement High and was the only disc that has a hole in the sku. So everyone that bought a 360 add-on at the end of Feb. has about month to go before they receive their discs.

Ultimate Matrix Trilogy was picked up from DD during their 20% off sale, and Heroes S1 was picked up from a CAG. Smallville S5 & S6 were picked up from BB when they went down to $40 each, and one was $30 due to a in-store pickup error.

Nailed some of the higher-end stuff on Amazon.com as they were available and cheaper than retail. I think I ended up with 60 or so movies, including my 5 freebies.

Thats my hope too. I've gotten a few good deals(a bunch using Blockbusters 2 for $20 deal), but nothing like what I was hoping for.

I went to Play & Trade and picked up the Bourne Trilogy used for $30 before I came home yesterday, which I think was a good deal, and I might jump on some of the hd's in the "Trade your HD movies" thread on here and a couple on DDD eventually.....but I'm starting ot think I definitely showed up to the dance too late....

Its at the point now that I showed up and the janitor is helping the band load the last of the equipment and housekeeping is finishing sweeping up the floor.

quick question for someone who might know... How rare is Bee Movie on HD?? a local used dvd store that does business in MO called me today to tell me they had a used copy ( I put it on my wish list never thinking i would actually get a call) They said they would hold it for 2 days for me. Should i call back to have them ship it???

The HD-DVD version of Bee Movie was recalled. If they actually have a copy, you could probably snatch a ton. A new "copy" went for like $400 the day it was suppose to be released. The reason I say "copy" was because the auction was very suspicious. A number of us were following it here that the day it was posted.

hmm... Thanks for the quick reply. I'll call them back 1st thing tomorrow morning to make sure it was the HD version. if so it could help me buy the ps3 i've been wanting

Picked up what I considered to be a good deal today:

I took Casino Royale, Chappelle's Show S2, Bourne Identity and Swordfish (all SD - I picked up Swordfish, Casino Royale and Bourne on HD/BD recently) and walked out of MovieStop with Ocean's Trilogy for $16. And since I already had Ocean's 13 on HD, I took the one out of the case, plus 11 & 12, and Layer Cake in SD and got Layer Cake on BD for $9.

Right around $8 a movie, I can live with that. Even if it's technically double-dipping.

Don't call them. Just go and get it. And please share with us pics of the HD release of Bee.

okay you guys have convinced me.... i'm taking a ROAD TRIP!!!! I'll post back here tonight with some pics (hopefully) columbia,mo is about a 4 hour drive from Wichita

How pissed are you going to be when it's the SD version?

I think I would see if they'd transfer it between stores rather than waste...$70 worth of gas?

they won't transfer it between stores, but you can call the store to have them ship it for a small charge 3 or 4 bucks

called this morning, didn't have the HD version.... didn't want to waste that much money in gas for nothing, my explorer gets horrible gas mileage
Let me remind everyone that craigslist is a great place to find cheap HD DVDs. I just scored 5 brand new movies for 20 bucks.
Good to know.

Just got my HD DVD drive in the mail today from amazon. Can't beat 25.99 for a PC drive that is new/retail.
My mail in for 5 movies was returned saying the address was invalid....
did you use the tmnt one? Same thing happened to me, had to remail it out.

According to the people mine finally shipped on April 25th!!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Recieved:

Firewall

Got:
Blood Diamond
Bulletproof

One out of five isn't bad. Too bad I already own Blood Diamond.

Got my HDs in the mail today

Selected:
Babel
Swordfish
Black Rain
Frighteners
The Hulk

Got:
Babel
Swordfish
Black Rain
Jarhead
Dawn of the Dead

The substitutions are fine by me since I don't already own any of them.

Seems moviestop here still has some HD-dvds. It's only 1 shelf of them, but they have some. The used prices are decent I suppose (picked up Serenity for $10 used before edgecard, and most are $12.99-$14.99 used).

I'm tempted to ordered Fear and Loathing from DeepDiscountDVD for $12.30, which seems to be the norm for alot of hd-dvds on there...

I'm getting both Shrek the Third and the Bladerunner 5disc set from a lady on craigslist for $25 shipped, which I think is a good deal, although movie stop has tons of Shrek 3 for $10 used.

Ugh, got my 5 free HD DVDs today & the 3 I wanted most got replaced while the 2 I didn't really want, I got. I wanted/selected Darkman, Frighteners, Hulk, Babel, & Swordfish & I got Swordfish, Babel, Dawn of the Dead(already have on Blu-ray), Jarhead(already have), & Spy Game(could've been worse) instead.

Oh well, free is free, although I'm gonna have to decide what to do with Jarhead & Dawn, as I have absolutely no use for them.

I've been trying to keep an eye out on Craigslist for movies, but oddly enough, not much luck. I live in a fairly populated area, so I never have an issue finding something I want (whether or not the price is right is another question). I only came across one or two ads, and they obviously wanted way too much, with haggling having no effect on them. There was also a Blu-ray ad, someone who obviously just got their five free movies, and wanted nearly full retail for them. Just classic.

I may give Craigslist a look or two and see what they might have.

I'm not surprised people are thinking near-retail for the free movies, as it's likely they haven't checked eBay for them, as there's plenty of them to go around. Damn Internet amateurs. :D

I finally got my free movies in but only two were ones that I ordered (first two listed).

hddvd:
swordfish
aeon flux
fast time in ridgemont high
jarhead
spy game

I wouldn't mind acquiring Jarhead from someone, but I'm not likely to pay what people are asking for it. I mean, damn, it was free for you. I'm not about to pay you $20 for it.

I'm still looking out for Ultimate Matrix, and a couple of single titles, but I think my HD days are coming to a close. In the world of 'consoles that play HD media,' I'd much rather use my super-quiet PS3 over the 360.

Just got mine. Can't remember what I ordered anymore, but its not what I got. I received:

13 Monkeys (didn't order)
HP: Order of the Phoenix (didn't order)
Bourne Supremacy (didn't order)
Italian Job (didn't order)
The Mummy (didn't order)

I am happy with those however, with the exception of the Bourne Supremacy (which is the only one of the three Bourne movies I already have)
Anyone that got the $50 HD DVD add on get their HD DVD's already?
Me, I just got mine today. I bought the player a few days after it hit $50..so, end of February.

If it makes you feel any better, you don't have that Dawn of the Dead on Blu-ray. The original is on blu-ray, the remake is on HD DVD.
Dawn of the Dead(already have on Blu-ray),
are you sure? i thought the old romero one was on blu

not the new one from 2004

I guess I'll keep that one after all.

I got my five free HD-DVDs today. I sent in my form on February 27th right after buying the 360 add-on.

Asked for:
Babel
The Thing
Full Metal Jacket
The Frighteners
Darkman

Received:
Babel
Blood Diamond
Casino
The Mummy
Chronicles Of Riddick

I was really hoping that I'd get FMJ and The Thing, but oh well. Considering I either own or have no interest in these, look for a trade thread once I get back from vacation next week.

Aaron

I've been getting HDs off of ebay lately at decent prices I think:

Justice League New Frontier $14.75 shipped *sealed*
Full Metal Jacket DELUXE and Babel $10.72 shipped *both sealed*
U2 Rattle and Hum $6.25 shipped *sealed*

and off of Craigslist I got:
Bladerunner 5disc collection $14.42 shipped *open *

Hoping I didn't get ripped price-wise. I need to hit up MovieStop starting in June to see what I can find for $12 and less.
