The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

shoot! i couldnt wait anymore and got the Add-on for $45. and bought like 3 movies, so the total is $65 :D

but im still curious.. anyone can tell me why the stand alone is a better choice.. for a used Toshiba HD-A3

The A3 upconverts (the 360 will if it has an HDMI port) and can internally decode TrueHD tracks.

A stand alone is always better then an add-on.
I'm sure ppl have noticed the thread. But for those with a Moviestop near them (there is a location list in the op of the thread). Moviestop is running a 40% off HD-DVD clearance. All movies are $3.60-$8 and all boxsets are $3.60 (Nip Tuck)-$18 (Sopranos, Ultimate Matrix, Planet Earth, Heroes, etc). There is also a B1G1 unlimited coupon, making 2 hd-dvd boxsets as low as $1.80 each.
I don't have one around me. Damn.

For anyone with a Moviestop around them, could you pick me up some HD-DVDs? I'd pay for the DVDs, shipping, and of course throw in extra for your troubles. Trust me, you'd be well rewarded.

I've found in my experience that the add on is much less fussy about disks and plays pretty much everything....also faster start up.

I don't think it is.
(edit- I cant remember what I was trying to say here. I'm confused, heh. ultimately i think getting the 360 add on is riskier than the hd-dvd standalone but the standalone tends to be a better value).

I bought an HD-D3 from costco for $95 after tax. Ended up being free due to the costco rebate voucher I get as an executive member.

1- Your 360 is going to fail eventually and when it does, the A3 (or d3) will still playback HD-DVDs. The add on drive will work on a pc but without the right software it's not all that helpful. I use mine as a USB hub.
2- If you lack VGA or HDMI connections in your 360, you can upscale DVDs on the A3 and not the 360.
3- Not relying on the 360 to play HD-DVD alleviates stress on the 360 and makes it less prone to RROD.
4- The A3 may come with 300 and Bourne Identity. The 360 add on comes with King Kong and a remote. If you already have a remote, that's less helpful. 300 was better than King Kong IMO.

To date I've not had an issue with the D3 playing back HD-DVDs except for forbidden planet (which mightve been dirty or scuffed). I have had some problems with some dvds but I believe those discs were also dirty/scuffed.

i got my RROD already so hopefully.. ill never get it again! thanks for ur input, damn shouldve got the A3 then!

I finally purchased the HD-DVD drive from Fry's for $39.99 (I was already ordering something and this caught my eye).

I picked up Casino, Jarhead, Mission Impossible Collection, and Transformers (all new) from inetvideo.com for $55 and Matrix Collection, Oceans Collection, and a Scanner Darkley for $58 from DDD.

All good choices? Any suggestions for other good (and cheap) HD-DVDs?

Looks like you made some good choices to me. Jarhead and Transformers are both incredible HD-DVDs.

I'd suggest Batman Begins, The Departed, 300, Hot Fuzz and Smokin' Aces. All are good movies with great picture quality. Most should be cheap enough too, especially 300 since it was packaged with a lot of the players.

Can also use VGA to upconvert with the add-on.

Anyone know where to get the Motorhead disc for less than 20 bucks? I just realized the other day while arranging my collection that I never bought it. Amazon has it but I figured I'd see if anyone knew of a place that had it cheaper.

Does VGA look just as good as HDMI ? I have an earlier 360 so it does not have the HDMI port but I would love to be able to upscale my regular DVDs! Is monoprice the best place to buy a VGA cable?

Well, it took 6 loooonnnngg months (including the first 5 getting lost in the mail), but I finally received my 5 free movies:
-Blood Diamond - haven't seen it
-Bourne Identity - great movie, but I already own it
-The Departed - awesome movie...excited about this one
-Sleepy Hollow - haven't seen it
-Transformers - decent, but already own it (first HD-DVD I bought)

All in all, I can't complain too much. It's unfortunate that I had 2 duplicates, but after 6 months of checking out clearances, it was bound to happen.

This is why I fucking love the format war.

How much for a player and 37 movies? $100 off Craigslist. Out of all the 37 films I only needed 4 of the titles so the other 33 are up on Half.com (or available here for sale. PM me if interested).
Where the hell can I find a NEW player? I don't want any of this refurbished shit.

I have an XA1, but the shitty thing won't pass audio through HDMI, so I'm looking to get one of the newer ones that can bitstream audio.

I would have been fine with Blu-ray, until I saw this delicious shit:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1059419
It'll be tough finding a new player out there, though you might luck out at a lower-tier electronics retailer, or somewhere online.

My XA-2 was a refurb, and it was half or less than any new players I found. Works great, and I picked up a 3-year warranty on it from the vendor.

Hmm...I might be picking up the LG BH200 tomorrow from BB...$339 ain't too shabby. Now I just need to find one of those Joke Zone coupons.

eBay has some A2 or A3s for about $80 or so brand new. No retail store carries them (maybe Fry's or Wal-Mart might have a few)

Yes...you cant tell the difference (at least I can't on my 56" 1080p set)

you can get the official MS vga cable foe less than $10 if you can find it at toys r us

monoprice doesnt sell the official one although it is cheap depending on the shipping price

Hmmm... that is a good deal. Warehousedeals.com has some open box Samsung BD-P1500s for 248 that are tempting. I'd like a BRD player for Nightmare Before Xmas.

Oceans Trilogy just shipped from DDD...all that's left for me is Motorhead and I think that's it. How sad.

Yes, VGA will give you the same results.

Is monoprice the best place to buy a VGA cable?
Pretty sure you have to buy the MS branded VGA cable, so unless they sell that or an "imitation" brand one, then no.

Gizmo - very nice haul. Congrats.
My almost one year old somehow broke the remote for my A3. Suggestions on reasonable replacements? Thanks in advance.
Try calling Toshiba? They maybe able to send you a new one.

I was going to say try eBay but there is only one A3 remote up and it's currently going for $31.58 shipped :/

Picked up a few HD-DVDs from mer71. (He's got more in his TL if anybody's interested.)

Goodfellas (Best Movie Ever Made IMO)
Billy Madison
Bourne Trilogy

I don't remember the price, but it was pretty good. Now I'm up to 7 HD-DVDs. :)

Toshiba told me that since my A2 was purchased from another person (i.e. used) I had to purchase a replacement remote because the warranty was voided. They priced it at $29.64 + tax.
That's a tad high for a player who's updated brother is selling for $60 on buy.com IMO.

That is a little high for the remote when you can get the updated player for 60 however the one on buy.com is it new or used?

Also I just picked up the Samsung BD-UP5000 combo player at Best Buy today. It came out to 537.99 after tax. I don't think that was all to bad only it was an open boxed item. The LG they had was 399.99 for the "new" one and 349.99 for the 2 that were open box units. I could have saved some cash with the LG however the "new" one from the looks of things went through hell and back. At least the box did and seeing how I work in warehousing a know what hell some of the stuff I have worked with goes through. I know that it had to have been put through some shit. I know that it had padding in the box but still something that is new should not have looked like it did. I have seen used in better condition, hell even the open boxed Samsung looked to be in a lot better condition.

The video quality is nice even though I have it only with composit. I will upgrade to HDMI after I make sure the unit works correctly. So next week I will order some cables from a seller on amazon or search the thread to see what that other dealer everyone uses is. The audio is nice however I'm only playing it through the TV's speakers. I have to say that the ones on the Olivea that it is pluged up to are better then the Samsung's speakers I have in my living room.

Only issues I have with it are the load times and the fact that with it being open box I did not get a remote. I'm sure the load times will be some what faster when I updated it if it is not currently updated to the newest update. The remote I called Best Buy about and they said they had one and would have it for me to pick up. So when I picked it up all it said on the top was Bluray when the book showed it with bot the logo for Bluray and HD. I questioned this and they checked it and it does work with this player. When I got it home I found out that I was correct and it is not for this player. It is a different model number and two of the buttons are different then the one that should have come with it. I'm hoping Samsung may correct this issue and be willing to send me the one for it however with it being an open box item I'm unsure. Anyone have experiance with this or open box items where the manufacturer did replace something that was missing?

All in all it seems to be a good player. Only draw back that I currently see is the load times only I'm used to the add on for the 360 for my HD and the PS3 for my BD and they both seem to load much faster. However for an extra player and one to have for my bead room it is not bad.

So am I the only one still waiting for my 5 Free HD-DVDs? I tried calling the number on the form but they no longer have anyone answering the line.

Easy as that... and cheap as that too!

doesnt hurt to have some lying around, might as well order them.

Thanks however I think I'm going to have to go with a 6 ft cable. Amazon has one that is a 1.3 for 3.95 and the bad thing is shipping is chances are going to be about as much if not more.
If you have a MovieStop nearby, you may want to go pick up some King Kongs. Cheap way to get some extra cases at .60/piece.
Damn...they are that cheap?
Is Moviestop a separate retail store form Gamestop or is it just what they call their movie shelves inside the Gamestop?
Separate store.

Give it up for adoption and try again.

Damn wish we had a place like that in the St. Louis MO area.

WOW I never saw the film. I wanted to but just never got around to it. Was it really that bad? Also is that a US version of the film or an import?
Damn wish we had a place like that in the St. Louis MO area.
There is a MovieStop in St. Louis, at least, it was there the last time I was by it a couple of months ago.

It's by South Hanley, south of Highway 40 and north of Manchester. It's in the same shopping plaza as the new Walmart and Sam's Club.

As I check the in-store locator for WM and Sam's Club, I think it's technically in Maplewood, at Maplewood Commons.

Thanks shrike I might have to check that out. Wonder how long it will take to get there from Granite City IL. Hell HD-DVDs for less then a buck could be worth the drive. I need new cases for some due to how they were when I bought them from Best Buy.

Universal is set to announce some pretty cool titles in the near future...sadly it looks like some other previous HD DVD titles may have gotten pushed back into 2009 :whistle2:(

Just King Kong. There are a shiton of them out there because of all the pack-ins. In fact, the pack-ins are typically marked less than the retail copies, but all ring up the same price.

Other titles will still be $5.99-$32.99 (before 40%). The TV seasons are the ones at the upper end, of course. All the regular titles should be $12.99 or less before discount.

YMMV. Our Movie Stop here shipped out ALL their HDs a couple of months back (end of May I think) and said they sent them to corporate who was sending them to the "top 5 stores in the US to sell". I'd kill for some of these killer deals.

DeepDiscount still has alot of Warner Titles for $8.99-$9.99 new with free shipping. I snagged Adventures of Robin Hood, Forbidden Planet (missed out on the uber-deal on the collector's version), Appleseed Ex-Machina, TMNT and Justice League for $8.99 each a month ago.

Now for these things to pop up in a place like Big Lots for $5 a pop. lol
