The time has come to bid our preferred format farewell. An unfortunate but obvious conclusion to the HD DVD vs. Blu-Ray battle is that one of them would have to get buried in the end. I was happy to see many dual-format owners say that they preferred HD DVD, and even now the format offers some features that Blu-Ray is still catching up with.

Although the manufacturing of new players has come to a close, Toshiba will continue to support and service current players for the next several years.

The original HD DVD thread can still be found here and does have some helpful information here and there and was quite useful during the format's life. However, as it approached the 4500 post mark, it's clear that this is as good a time as any to start fresh.

Ordered all my movies on Thursday night and received them all on Monday using the free shipping option. Glad I did not pay for express shipping.
All discs arrived in excellent condition.

Went to Target that I picked up Blue Planet from for $6.26, but passed on their $24.99 The Mummy from a couple weeks ago. I found that the HD DVD Mummy copy was clearanced down to an "as is" price of $9.96. Kind of high I thought, so I passed.

Went to Circuit city today. They had two copies of Mission: Impossible on HD DVD, still tagged at it's pre-losing-the-war price of $39.99, yes thirty-nine, ninety-nine. I can't imagine where they found these? Maybe in the back collecting dust? That store hasn't had HD-DVD since ... a very long time.

Of course they were 60% off due to the store closing. Pretty ridiculous nonetheless.

[quote name='LinkinPrime']Awesome deal for those looking to get in on HD DVD or get an extra player plus these particular TV shows:

Crap I bought all that stuff at Frys tonight and It was $39.99 for the Bundle (all the same except w/out BSG) and I bought BSG Separately for $15. The deal is still good online, I feel ripped off of $5...

I did just find the Ultimate Matrix Collection on half.com for $22 shipped...Is that a good price?

I just accidentally bought an HD DVD that I bought yesterday.

Its Alpha Dog on HD DVD. If anyone wants it I'll sell it to you for what I paid for it and I'll take the hit on shipping. $5.

Not sure if thats against the posting rules, if it is let me know and I'll delete the post.

funny you mentioned this, but in my buying frenzy i actually bought 2 that i already owned if your interested we can trade movies. They are Evan Almighty and The fast and the furious tokyo drift. let me know. thanks

Has anyone ever had odd problems with their HD DVDs? I bought a copy of Million Dollar Baby from Blockbuster.com quite some time ago, and just put it in the other day. Occasionally it would skip as I was watching it, but as it played more and more, it skipped more and more. Eventually, it stops playing, always in the same spot-- right before Chapter 10. Won't play past that, even if I select random chapters after chapter ten. The disc has a few scratches, but it's mostly clean.

I'm using the 360 HD DVD add on-- unfortunately I have no other drive to test it on. Should I contact Blockbuster and hope they send me another one?

I had that same issue with End of Days. I just sent it back to DDD.com and they sent me a new one to replace it.

Sorry, I'm not interested in either title. Thanks for the offer though.

If I was you I'd do exactly as you susgested in the last paragraph - call blockbusters, I guess its within your statutory rights to do so.

Thanks

Anyone have any suggestions for a higher-end HD-DVD player? As such, I mean full 1080P and capable of playing lossless audio soundtracks. Right now I use my 360 add-on. I'm just looking to have a standalone to use for when that dies. Recommendations can include specific models as well as where to buy it. Thanks!

James,
I have several players. (Toshiba A2, A35, Onkyo 805, and LG BH200). The Onkyo 805 is exceptional, in terms of playability (got mine at shoponkyo.com), but all HD DVD players are tough to find now, unless you pay a crazy 3rd party price, or take chances with a "used" Ebay item.

If you can, try your local BB to see if they have any Open Box LG BH200 (also plays BD's) units. LG is giving out a $75 rebate, because they will not provide a firmware bump to make the player BD Live. All you have to do is just scan and send in your receipt. If you have an open box unit from BB, chances are it has not been registered). If you can live without that feature, and or/want a player that can played "locked" blu-rays from all over the world, this may be a good option. My player was $180, but I got it for $60, after GC's and RZ certs. Usually you can negotiate them down, especially if it's an open box, and if the cord or remote are missing. For me, as I am an avid HD DVD and Blu collector, it was a great purchase. CC had them a while back, but at full price, and before they went under.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions!

So Xbox add-on is not "real" 1080p? What is it then?
Sorry if this sounds stupid but I'm not really into this HD stuff.

I have already have received two $50 gift cards from BB last year. One for the 360 add on and another for the Toshiba player I purchased in 2007. So today, when I got another letter from BB I was surprised. Sure enough, another $100 GC for me!

It is times like this that make my dislike for Best Buy start to wane.

Thank you Best Buy!

P.S. I still hate that you pulled all pennied out guides locally but I am getting over it!

How long ago where the LG BH200 cleared out? Seems like a good deal for a dual format player.

I'd also love to know...I'm looking for a dual-format HD/BR player...The 360 HD-DVD just isn't cutting the cheese anymore.

I noticed one on Newegg...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136133
But I'm not sure if my videocard/monitor can support full 1080p...I'm going to cry if I ever find out they can't.

Check out your local Best Buy. I found 2 at my local BB the other day. They'll more than likely be an open box item. Plus they may or may not come with remote &/or power cord. Make sure you ask if you find one. I'm debating whether to pick one up or not....they were $260 @ my BB.

It is definitely full 1080p,that is the strong suit of the player. It does not send the lossless audio, even as PCM-you are stuck with DD or DTS(DTS at the highest bit-rate,though).

I'm trying to find a standalone player (I've already got the 360 add-on). What is considered the best of the best of the short-lived HD-DVD player? Is it the Toshiba HD-A35? They seem pretty hard to come by, but I'm finding the HD-A30 everywhere. Is there much of a difference?

The XA2 is the best standalone unit. The A35 is a pretty close second.. kind of a "poor man's XA2". It has better upscaling capabilities than the A30 (but not as good as the XA2) and 5.1ch analog audio outs, which the A30 doesn't have. Otherwise they're fairly similar, if you find an A30 cheap. (as you said, the A35s are extremely hard to find.. they're only slightly more common than XA2s, really)

I would go for the BH 200 combo from LG seeing that you have both BD and HD discs from what you said in your thread. I had the BD5000 but had issues with some discs with it but the BH200 has worked great. I'm not sure how its HD DVD playback is when you compare it to the XA2 but it works well enough for me.

Is any familiar with both the XA2 and A35? I think I can get the XA2 used or the A35 new for about the same price.

It's limited to Paramount and Universal, but traderbora on Amazon Marketplace has been a big source of titles on this board:

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1232904...e=1&me=A2Q7JFWUPSYRTJ&rh=k:hd-dvd&sort=pmrank

Just noticed that both traderbora and closeoutmovies have some new HD-DVDs listed. Picked up a few of the ones I've been looking at, and a few of those.

Sariena,

Thanks for your informative reply. :applause: I ended up getting a Toshiba HD-A30 in very good shape for $65 off Craigslist. It was advertised at $95 but I offered $65 and the seller bit immediately. No movies. Just a player and the remote. I feel this meets my needs as a back-up player for the day when I retire my Xbox 360 add-on. It has 1080P (unlike the A20 which is 1080i) and it has reasonable audio features including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD (core only).

Thanks again,
James

What are the new titles? Looking through the pages, I'm not noticing anything new added.

I know inetvideo added a bunch of new titles (which are all almost gone) but I didnt' notice anything new on traderbora or closeoutmovies. Also, inetvideo's free shipping is gone which makes getting a lot of the newer movies they have on there almost not worth it. But I did end up buying The Fountain for 9.99 (about 13 shipped) as it's hard to come by new for less than 20.00.

I could have sworn that at least Hulk wasn't on either of them...

Nonetheless, I feel that $30 is a good price for 5 movies :p

inetvideo is truly a jip now. I went to order 4 movies, $34, 10 of that for shipping...Really it's a slap to the face, shipping in no way costs them that much.

some nice prices with tradeboro..

honestly though i have too many hd movies.. dont know if i wanna keep adding to the collection.

and i see the prices on players is back up.. wow i remember when the a35 came down to the low 100s and an a30 was probably like $80.

im fine with my a2, 360 addon, and my lg pc drive

The big thing about traderbora is that it's fulfilled through Amazon, so you can get free shipping on $25 or use Amazon Prime if you have it. Also, if you're in a state that Amazon charges tax for, there's no tax for traderbora.

I've bought so many players the past 2 weeks I need to consider selling a couple. I had a hard time finding a deal on a player & then all of a sudden BOOM. It was one deal after another. I've picked up an A3, A30 & BH200 just in the last 2 weeks all in that order. Now I've got too many players(I also have a Venturer & (2) 360 add-ons).

I also suggest keeping the BH200 seeing how it plays both HD and BDs. Anyone know how the BH200 stacks up in quality to the XA2?

It's actually fairly close, from all I have heard, to the XA2. Probably not quite as good but given how much tweaking you can do, it sounds like you can get it pretty close. (both the XA2 and BH200 allow user-customization of upscaling stuff)

I don't have any way to compare, just going by what I have read. It sounds like at default the BH200 isn't too great but if you go through and make some tweaks you can get a pretty awesome picture out of it.

For HD-DVDs it may even be closer. I know I prefer the picture from the BH200 to my A35 for HDDVD...

Trust me, the BH200 is going nowhere. I had been looking for a second stand alone to go w/ my Venturer when I ran across the A3. I had been mainly looking for 3rd gen hd players w/ 1080p, but the A3 deal had a bunch on movies w/ it that I didn't have so I couldn't pass it up. Right after I purchased the A3(within a day I might add), I ran across a deal on the A30. Then within the next day or 2 I found the BH200.
Needless to say, I drove my wife crazy with all these purchases. The deals were too good to pass up but I doubt I'll keep all of them. Decisions,decisions....

btw, I watched Silent Hill the hd-dvd German import a couple of days ago on the BH200 & it looked great.

Hey guys - I'm guessing that that the last firmware update Toshiba provided earlier this year will be the last (hopefully they'll continue the support)
I love my HD A-35!

If the last firmware update supports all the current HDdvd's then why would they need another update?

Would you pay $350 for a used XA2? The price isn't an issue, but I don't like buying used. Of course, buying an HD-DVD player new for $800 is also absurd.

Is there a big difference between the A30 and the A35? The A30 seems pretty cheap to come by, but the reviews don't make it sound to good.

I absolutely love my A-30. The only problem I have is when skipping frames quickly it'll lock up every once in a while. If i just hit stop and play it'll be fine again. Not a serious issue by any means. If you find one cheap i say get it if you already have a bunch of HD-DVD's like myself.
