I thought I would make this thread to clear up some of the misinformation about HD-DVD imports and give us a place to talk about them.

I will be editing this and adding more in the coming days/weeks/months/years so if you think I am missing anything, have a suggestion, post in this thread, tell me and I'll add it in.

HD-DVD Imports & You: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I import HD-DVDs?
A: Good question. There are many reasons why you may decide to import a HD-DVD title from a different country.

There are titles available overseas that haven't been released anywhere else in HD (for example: Band Of Brothers, The Machinist, Mulholland Drive, etc.)

There are titles that are exclusive to Blu-Ray in America but available on HD-DVD elsewhere (for example: The Prestige, Silent Hill, Terminator 2, Rambo, etc.)

There are titles that are only available in America on a HD-DVD combo disc while available elsewhere on normal HD-DVD disc (for example: Children Of Men, Hot Fuzz, etc.)
Q: Will these work on *whatever HD-DVD unit I own*?
A: Yes, any import you buy should work on whatever HD-DVD unit you own. The only title I can think of off the top of my head that has some playback issues is Enemy At The Gates with HD-A1/X1 & HD-A3/A35 players.
Q: But aren't these in the PAL format?
A: No, PAL/NTSC formats are a thing of the past with HD. Most movies are encoded in 1080p24 with the signal (50 Hz or 60 Hz) determined by the player.
Q: But *my store of choice* has it listed at a Region 2/PAL release!
A: Again, there is no such thing as region coding with HD-DVD. Most of the time when a store has a title listed as PAL or some different region, it's because they just copy & paste'd the DVD info.
Q: Do these movies have their original audio or are they foreign dubs with English subtitles?
A: I have yet to hear about a import title that doesn't have it's original audio. Every American made movies should have it's English audio. Now, that doesn't mean that every import is English friendly. There are some foreign films that only have it's original audio and no English subtitles. Do your research before you purchase a movie and check this thread over at High Def Digest which is very well maintained by kannisto http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=3010
Q: So, they have English audio, what about their packaging?
A: Almost all of the time the packaging is in the language of the country you purchase it from.

Here's a photo of the back of some of the import HD-DVDs I own as an example. In the photo is The Machinist (Japan/Toshiba), Band Of Brothers Vol 1 (Japan/Toshiba), Mulholland Drive (France/Studio Canal), Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer (Germany/Constantin), The Prestige (UK/Warner Bros UK) and Terminator 2 (France/Studio Canal)

Q: How about their menus?
A: Same thing as the packaging but alot of Studio Canal movies have an English menu choice. Even if the title doesn't have an English menu, it usually isn't very hard to figure out what is what.
Q: How about forced subtitles?
A: Some titles do have forced subtitles. Off the top of my head there's disc 1 in the Terminator 2 set, Serpico and some extras on other movies. The cool thing about Terminator 2 Disc 1/Serpico are that the forced subtitles are resizeable. On the Terminator disc you can just shrink them down to sit solely in the black bar or with Serpico you can shrink it down and push it to the bottom of the screen so it doesn't effect your movie experience so much.
Q: What about this pitch correction/issue I've been hearing about?
A: Some of Studio Canal's releases have a "pitch issue" from where they corrected the PAL soundtracks to match the now normal video. The audio is 4% higher in pitch. Is this a big issue? Well, it depends on who you talk to. Some people don't even notice it, some people roll around the floor as if they have just been set on fire while screaming it sounds like Alvin & The Chipmunks. With me, I didn't notice anything was up until I got to the really high pitch noises (like the police sirens in Rambo or some of the ambient noise in Mulholland Drive) and even then it wasn't that distracting. It just felt like something was slightly off. I guess if you are a professional singer or if you have seen the movie a million times, it could be a problem for you but as always, YMMV

Titles with this issue are:
Basic Instinct
Elephant Man, The
Graduate, The
Mulholland Drive
Rambo: First Blood
Rambo: First Blood Part 2
Rambo III
Total Recall
Q: Wouldn't it just be cheaper to buy a Blu-Ray player?
A: Well, unless you are planning to buy 30+ imports, I would say you are better off moneywise just importing the movies you really want to see. Plus like I said at the beginning there are some movies that are on HD-DVD that aren't available anywhere else in the world in HD.

Some people here may think I talking out of my ass about this part but what better proof is there than my own personal experience.

Here's my personal import bill so far (including the price of shipping)

Total Recall (France) = $34.22
Mulholland Drive (France) = $35.63
Terminator 2: Judgement Day (France) = $35.63
Elephant Man (France) = $34.39
Serpico (France) = $31.44
Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer (Germany) = $40.00
Band Of Brothers Vol. 1-5 (Japan) = $80
The Machinist (Japan) = $20.75
The Pianist (UK) = $33.21
The Prestige (UK) = $33.21
Reservoir Dogs (Netherlands) = $30.02
Les Triplettes De Belleville (France) = $40.02
Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky (UK) = $32.33
The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live at Monterey (UK) = $36.50
Bridge to Terabithia (Italy) = $25.00

So doing the math, I have:
19 titles
13 titles currently not available in America on either format (14 if you count the Director's Cut of T2 that comes in the 2 disc set from France which isn't available anywhere else in HD)
$542.38 spent overall
And considering that Blu-Ray titles aren't free (using $19.95 as price point), I've only spent $163.33 extra on imports.

Of course, you guys won't be able to find Band Of Brothers or Machinist for those prices but currently I'm ahead of the game :)
Q: I'm now well informed, and I believe I want to partake in some import goodness. Where should I go?
A: Depends on what you want.

- If you are getting multiple titles from one region like the UK or France, the foreign Amazons are usually the best.
- If you are getting one title, a German title or a mismatch of titles from different regions, XploitedCinema.com (which is based and ships out of America) would be your best bet.
- Australia is worth checking out (specifically EzyDVD.com) due to their dollar being weaker than ours but they only have a handful of titles.
- If you are getting Japanese titles, it depends. For older titles, you usually can't do better than HMV Japan price-wise. For preorders/new releases, you should check out Amazon JP.

Be sure though when dealing with an actual overseas site to take in account VAT tax.
Q: VAT tax?
A: Value added tax. Most (not all) foreign sites have VAT tax (up to 22%) added into the list price. When you go to the checkout page (right before you confirm your order), it will see that the item is leaving their country (if you are located in the US) and the system will remove VAT from your overall price.

The exact amount of VAT or even the inclusion of it depends on the store/country you are purchasing from.
Q: Well, now I'm addicted to importing. Where can I find info on newer releases?
A: http://hddvdformat.blogspot.com/ is a fantastic blog that usually breaks import news or you can check kannisto's thread here at High Def Digest. He is continually updating his list with current/upcoming titles and where you can get them from. http://forums.highdefdigest.com/showthread.php?t=3010
Q: Anything else?
A: Yes, some misc things to know is:

- Most Japanese titles come in a normal DVD case instead of a HD-DVD case (although with the release of Band Of Brothers and other newer release, it seems the normal DVD case is getting phased out)
- Not every import looks like the latest summer blockbuster (mostly some of the older ones aren't fantastic but they are still better than their DVD brethren)
- Trend with caution before putting down the cash for a title. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

Damn, have to tag this thread. Thx Sporadic for getting it started. Was always curious about importing HD-DVDs, but never did it before. I doubt I'll do much, but there may be exceptions here and there. I'm looking at Crank and maybe one other right now.
That would be a pretty great deal if they shipped to the US.
Sorry Sporadic, didn't realize before you mentioned it.

So as far as imports go...I don't see anything in the next month or so that I'd want. I think that this is it for me. I gotta get all of the Resident Evil's but I think I'll be getting the Japanese releases since the German one's have unimpressive HD coding.

I just got this today
p1030083hv7.jpg

Popped in Crank and OMG its seriously one of the best looking films I've ever seen in HD...it looks absolutely stunning and the sound is incredible. This is easily one of my favorite films for the content but now its my favorite HD DVD because it makes it truly a more enjoyable experience.

I'll check out FF4:ROTSS later...

If you haven't seen it yet, Shoot 'Em Up, is even better! I want my HD DVD now!

I wanted to see it in theaters but I missed it. It will definately be a blind buy when New Line decides to release it on HD DVD:
The movie will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray formats on New Year's Day, January 1, 2008.[20] The HD DVD version of the movie will be released later than DVD and Blu-ray versions due to HD DVD lacking region coding. New Line is a format neutral company supporting both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

Shoot Em Up is not worth the buy, heck not even worth the rent imo. The biggest garbage movie in my opinion, even got rated for top 10 worst movies of 2007.

The "elite" foreign cases don't have the white writing, it has raised metal paint.

Yeah, like the Sporadic pic above...its silver. The picture doesn't show it clearly because the light didn't hit it right.

Please, if the poster likes Crank they are almost 100% going to like Shoot Em Up. People watch movies for different reasons and some times nonstop senseless action is a fun thing. Also I thought everyone knew really violent or actiony movies usually get dumped on by critics.

Oh man I love Crank...watched the whole film last night...what a fucking great movie...I like the extended scenes too they really add to the film, not sure why they cut them out. The best HD DVD I own to date.

Agreed. This is the best looking HD-DVD I've seen yet. The picture quality is incredible. The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the cover art itself.

Linkin, if you'd please finish your promising cover posted over at the AVS forum so I can replace the horrid standard one it'd be much appreciated. ;)

I'm working on it as I get time...I'll get it done don't worry.
As some of you may already know the Grindhouse six-disc DVD is being released in March... in Japan. I've been wanting it for HD DVD for quite some time and I would love to see an announcement for an HD DVD version.

The possibility of importing a Grindhouse HD DVD makes me giddy inside.
Weinstein seriously needs to get off their ass and put out some damn hd dvd's in America.

Wheres Halloween?

Grindhouse?

HALF THE MOVIES WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE ALREADY!!!

Does anyone know what was added in the RE APOC hd dvd version? It says "extended" BUt I was curious as to what exactly was added?

It's coming in Germany (not as Grindhouse but the two individual movies) but rumor has it that Weinstein is blocking their release until they release it in America.

They better hurry up though, if they keep fucking around, I'll just buy that Japanese one, make a copy of disc 5 and than sell the piece of shit. I only want to see the theactral cut since I missed the whole 3 week window it was in theaters.

- edit Amazon JP already has it up for $64.64

I saw that No Country for Old Men was distributed by both Miramax and Paramount. I see that only the Blu-ray and DVD formats are being released in the States does this mean Paramount may have distribution righst outside of the States such as the UK?

I certainly hope so. I'd be more than willing to pay import prices for this HD DVD.

Yes.

It's even possible that Showgate (aka Toshiba) could release it on HD-DVD in Japan.

Alliance Films (2007) (Canada) (theatrical)
Buena Vista International (2008) (Argentina) (theatrical)
Miramax Films (2007) (USA) (theatrical)

Almost done, just looking for feedback before i finish it up:

This is obviously not as clear quality as the final copy since I had to shrink it down in order to post it.
Looks good, but "everyone" should be two words.
Good catch...thanks for the spell check. I'll fix that.
Never mind.

I really like the cover art. Are you leaving the bottom portion of the back cover empty?
It won't be empty, I'll be adding the cast, logos, film duration, rating...etc. I might change the way the screenshots look, somoeone over at AVS pointed them out and suggested that it doesn't really go with the style of the cover.
Two questions:

1. Where can I find "The Rock" on hd dvd?

2. Whats the deal with Jurassic Park?
1. I wish...hasn't even been announced at this point.

2. Maybe CES next week will shed some info.

well i was retarded and accidentially ordered 2 copies of Silent Hill. So, now i have an extra sealed copy if anyone is interested in a trade. PQ is unreal.
1. I wish...hasn't even been announced at this point.

Thanks again prime...

I am dying for the rock and JP. Is it possible to import the rock on hd dvd at some point like other movies that are strictly on BR?

Nice job!

But can you make me one with

, please?

I'm joking, but I may end up trying to print it up myself actually. :)

There's a B2G1 going on over at Amazon UK, while there aren't a ton of great deals, you could pick up

The Prestige
The Island
and one other movie

for only £35.66 ($70.38) shipped. That's only $23.46 per movie.

Thanks for posting this info! I recently received a shiny new Xbox HD-DVD player and I HAVE to have Terminator 2 and many oter movies that aren't available in the states.
Thanks Again!
