HDTV Plasma preferably 42''

CAGiversary!
I'm looking for a good 42inch plasma TV for under $1000. I saw the other threads asking for HDTV's but none of them had really decisive answers.

So is my best bet hoping for a Black Friday deal or buying on a website/craigslist?

Also, how reliable do you think it is to buy a used plasma on craigslist?
No offense to anyone, but plasma... seriously... I'm surprised they still make those things.
LCD's advantages, no glare (unless you buy the new sammy's which have worse glare than plasma's), slightly lighter, consume a bit less power

remind me how those are huge advantages when watching tv?

burn-in is gone on plasma (not saying it can't happen but it's 99% likely not to if you buy a new one), not to mention it handles high speed motion much better (this is huge for games and sports), has better picture quality (more lifelike images and better color) and offers a bigger picture for a lower price (so a better picture for a lower price??? no brainer here)

im pretty sure when it comes down to it, the biggest thing with a tv is the picture, and well plasma's still win hands down (unless you need a hdtv smaller than 42", then you shouldn't be purchasing an LCD, even the new Sony XBR4's images don't match plasma's, even though it's the closest any LCD has come....and the cheapest one is the 40" version which retails for $2400)

people have become brainwashed by dumb ass store employees or LCD backers like sony, etc....more companies are behind LCD because there's a bigger turn-around profit for them in manufacturing LCD's as opposed to plasma's

i think best buy is selling the 42" panasonic plasma on black friday for 899.99. my parents have two panasonic plasmas and i think the picture is better when compared to a lcd. the colors especially the blacks look better...

weve had no problems with anything panasonic.

i have the 700u which is currently the top of their plasma line and i love it

my uncle has a 75x or whatever number version the 720P series is without the anti-glare screen....that one also looks very good

basically for the money i think panasonic has the best plasma's (pioneer's do look a bit better as long as you aren't close up to their 720p models...like any large non-1080p tv....but they also cost more and to me the difference isn't that huge)

That Plasma at Sears on Black Friday is my TV, it's great. If someone held a gun to my head and made me complain about it, my only comment would be that it only has two component inputs. I've run out of space because of my Gamecube, 360 and PSP video-out.

EDIT - Drnick's post just reminded me of something. The 42" Plasma in question has an anti-glare screen. It isn't perfect but it's much improved over standard Plasmas that don't have it. I don't know how well it stacks up against an LCD in that regard but it's very usable in my family room (with it's windows and reptile lights).

I have a plasma, LCD and a DLP front projector in my house. they are all GREAT TV's, but in different ways (and it depends on your viewing room situation)

the projector is a dark chip 3 DLP front projector on to a 100" screen, its GREAT when you have little to no light in the room, which is great for watching movies, but for social Tv watching it isn't the best in my opinion.

the plasma is a panasonic 42" 720p we've had for a little over a year. this thing is FANTASTIC. the only problem I have with it is the glare you get when its hit by light (a lamp in the room, or sun that comes in at times during the day.

the TV I mainly view is a Vizio 37" LCD set in my basement. this set blew my mind as far as price to performance goes (its pretty close to the panasonic as far as picture quality goes, but Panny does have deeper blacks)

if I could, I'd swap the plasma and the LCD (put the plasma in the basement where its darker) but I can't fit a 42" down there.

you really can't go wrong, if you have ambient light in your room I'd go with an LCD, they are usually a little less money (I paid about 500 for mine after shipping and rebates for a 37" you can get a 42" for probably around 700-800 if you look around on-line.

happy hunting!

Stay away from Vizio's. They suck for gaming (too much lag) and standard def on anything looks like ass. Contrast/blacks are really bad too....the only way I can see anything in Dead Rising is if I turn the brightness WAAAAAY up to the point that everything looks like a colorless, washed-out mess.

FYI LCD's aren't cheaper per square inch. They are the most expensive TV on the mass market.
