HDTV w/ Time Warner Cable - n00b question

BelieveTheHype

CAGiversary!
Okay, I'm fairly new to the HD world. I just bought a 32" Samsung LN-T3253H LCD. Now, it looks like the Time Warner HD receiver cable box thing has options for displaying 480p, 480i, 720p, and 1080 something. I forget. Anyway, the format is stuck on 480i. That's standard definition...right? Shouldn't this be higher resolution? I believe my TV can produce 720p and 1080i. I've contacted Time Warner, but they have yet to get back to me. I guess I'm just wondering if I'm getting the best that I can from what I've got. If someone could fill me in, it'd be greatly appreciated.
I'm betting you have a SciAtl box, right?
i have no idea lol...i don't even know what that means. i think i just have a standard hd box. nothing special about it. i could get back to you on that if you let me know how i could find out lol...told ya i was n00b :)

Scientific Atlanta. You most likely have a 8300HD box.

WIth TV on, box off: Press Info+Guide. Depending on software, you will be able to access the menu. Should be pretty self-explanatory from there.

He means the brand of the box is Scientific Atlanta. That's what he is asking.

is it hooked up with 5 cables or just 3 cables? If you have it hooked up through composite cables (red yellow white) rather than component (red blue green white red) than that is your problem.

Could be a pioneer box too. Either way you should have to hit menu and then A for more settings and the option for resolutions is there.

I have mine set for just 720p though you can pick as many as you want. I just hate the "resoultion switch lag"when you go from a 1080i network to a 720p one. SD is unaffected.

What's sad is I had to tell the installer how to make it show 1080i instead of always 480p.

Mine wouldn't even work with component cables before I fixed it.

I have 5 component cables hooked into the back. the guy installed it when i was at work so i didn't get a chance to ask him everything i wanted. i've tried changing the resolution on my tv...and when i go up from 480, it seems like two black lines appear on the sides, or it's not fit to the screen. but my tv does scale up to 720p and 1080i...so i don't know what the problem is. i'm at work right now, hence the reason i can't name any specifics on brand names.

Since my father works there, I know they don't train the installers do stuff like that. They pretty much show them how to connect it to the pole outside, hook it up to the box and installing in the house and that's it.

Customer Service is the one that is trained to set the boxes to high def. In fact, that's who the installers call when they have questions like that.

Just be careful OP, they have to different channels for local stations. One is standard def. and the other is high def.

Just be glad you don't live in my area right now. The On Demand stuff is only coming in with spanish audio for some reason at the moment.
Turn off SAP you nub ;)

No, it's not my box. It's something with the system. The only reason I know it's only coming in spanish is he was checking his emails at work while I was talking to him and one of the emails mentioned it's a software problem they're working on.
