Hell Freezes Over: Call of Duty 4 more popular than Halo 3

Well, looks like Microsoft was right to drop Bungie when they did (;))
Xbox 360 Top Live Titles (based on UU’s)
1 Call of Duty 4
2 Halo 3
3 Guitar Hero III
4 Gears of War
5 Rock Band
6 Madden NFL 08
7 Assassin's Creed
8 Mass Effect
9 FIFA 08
10 Forza Motorsport 2
The game everyone expected to top the charts for months to come has been dethroned. What will replace Microsoft's flagship IP now that it is sinking fast?
Sweet. COD4 might finally be getting the respect it deserves.
Yeah, I mean COD4 was just flying under everybody's radar. A real sleeper hit. Completely ignored in all the GOTY awards, you know what I'm saying?

yes, sarcasm, as much as I could lay on without suffocating

I picked up COD4 and instantly thought I would be playing it more than Halo3. I loved it! However; I got Orangebox and played through all the single player (haven't even touched TF) and now feel myself ready to go back to Halo 3. If I had to guess, a year or three from now, Halo 3 will probably be back to the top of that list. Just my opinion though.

I'm really surprised by this. I would say most 360 users own Halo 3, while not all own CoD4 (at least in respect to my circle of friends). Although, I have been playing CoD4 more lately. It grew on me...at first, I didn't like online, now I love it.

Cod 4's unlockable weapons is what has kept me playing. And it just keeps going with prestige mode.

Halo doesn't really give you much to play for other than rank.

The topper is that the sheer number of asshats playing Halo 3 > Cod 4.
I never thought I would say this, but "I haven't played Halo 3 in like... 2 months!"
Ditto. I was going to go back and play through on Legendary (haven't yet), but haven't gotten around to it yet.
maybe when the halo Auto Update comes out everyone will comeback
When the map pack becomes free/the new maps come out I'm sure it will be at the top of the list again. But unless the auto-update fixes the god-awful gameplay in that game, I still won't be playing it.

I miss Halo 2 online.

It's pathetic that in this Gamerscore Generation people need anything other than FUN to make them play a game.

Ditto. Those CoD4 challenges and weapon/perk leveling are addictive and a breathe of fresh air. Where Halo 3 is the same as Halo 1 and 2 but with new maps.

Maybe people think getting all of the achievment points in a game they like is FUN?
I want to know how the hell Assassin's Creed is a LIVE title.
It counts the amount of people playing a given game while being connected to Live, not just playing online multiplayer.
Maybe people think getting all of the achievment points in a game they like is FUN?
What I'm talking about is when people can't have any fun with a game WITHOUT Achievement points or other collectables. Like daminion. It's pathetic, really. Good, clean, quality gameplay-decisive fun has been replaced for so many people with lame, grinding, "collect em all" addiction-based gameplay. People can't appreciate good gameplay, and enjoy the experience of playing, they have to "gain" something from it. They have to feel like they are accomplishing something by playing. And the kicker is they're not accomplishing shit.

"Oh yay I unlocked a new hat!" That's a piss-poor reason to enjoy a game.

Some people might think shooting heroin is fun, but I'm still going to call it pathetic.

As soon as I started playing COD4 I noticed I lost all interest in Halo 3. Better gameplay, better maps, better graphics, just a lot more fun.

I don't think it's this generation. I've been gaming since NES, and I've always needed something to work toward to keep playing a game. Once I've beat it and/or done all the extra stuff I care to I'd rather move onto something new rather than keep replaying the same game.

Now, I'm not an achievement whore and won't do things that aren't fun just to get points or unlock stuff. But adding that to an already fun experience (like CoD4 online) does hold my interest longer and keep me from moving onto a new game for a while longer.

I don't have enough time to play all the games that interest me as is, much less to keep plugging away at games that I'm not working towards any goals in.

There are some exceptions like fighting games etc. that are pretty much endless fun of course.

Oh noes! There where more unique users for one week on CoD4 than Halo 3, Halo 3 is dooooooooooooomed!

I enjoy both immensely and often play Call of Duty 4 one night and then Halo 3 the next (or both in the same night). Even though they're both FPS's, they're just different enough to be enjoyable at the same time (in moderation, of course). I think I enjoy Call of Duty 4 multiplayer a bit more, but they really need to fix the matchmaking and other little issues before it's as streamlined and easy as Halo 3's.

My guess is it's from all the people doing single player combined with all the people who got it for Xmas. I think everyone who wanted Halo 3 already got it when or around when it came out.

Good. I haven't touched Halo since a couple weeks after it came out. I don't see how running and shooting everything blindly is fun. Call of Duty 4 is a ton of fun, but even that I haven't played in a while.

Rock Band Being number 5 is very impressive IMO.

The difference is that COD4 unlockables actually affect the gameplay. The P90 that you get at level 40 is certainly not the same submachine gun as the mp5, which you start out with.

In Halo 3, you start out with everything, and coupled with the fact that it's not very fun to be stuck in a room where everyone is jumping around like idiots and meleeing at every possible opportunity, I'll take COD4 and its incentive system.

I had a conversation with a guy on COD4 about this.
Him: "I think I like Halo 3 better."
Me: "I've got to go with COD4; I think it's more fun, and I really like the fact that I've got to keep playing to get different weapons to try out."
Him: "Sure it might be more fun now, but what happens when you reach 55 and you don't want to prestige?"
Me: "But isn't that what you're stuck with in Halo from the start?"
Him:"...good point."
Can someone tell me how Mass Effect is on the list?
i noticed the samething with assasins creed as well.. and it was mentioned earlier in this thread..

"It counts the amount of people playing a given game while being connected to Live, not just playing online multiplayer."

I know it won rediculous amounts of awards. I guess I just know too many people too busy sucking on Master Chief's dick to give COD a chance.

Seriously, some of my friends I have to promise I'll play halo with them later in order for them to come over and play COD4.

So all this means is that at one time there were more people playing COD4 than Halo 3???

It seems factually irresponsible to draw such sweeping conclusions (Halo 3 is doomed) from one snapshot in time. Though I personally prefer COD4.

And you know what Pyro, you're right: replaying a fun game to get more gamerscore points is the same as and as pathetic as using heroine.

Finally someone with some sense! ;)

And the long-term forecast now calls for 2-3 heavy rumors a year for the Call of Duty movie, with the buzz front moving in over the Internet in the latter half of '08.

Halo movie rumors will be tapering off over the next few months, particularly after Halo Wars passes through. That may be it for the remainder of the 360 season.

Seriously, someone is going to try to slap the CoD name on a 'modern war', action-heavy script sooner than later, aren't they?

What's Uwe Boll up to?

As much as I love CoD4, the multiplayer is almost too easy now. I really enjoy it and it's a lot of fun but it sometimes gets dull when you keep getting stuck on a losing team even though you're rocking a 20-7 or something the entire round.

I really enjoy Halo's MP too. It can be equally as fun when you're playing with friends. They're just different kinds of shooters.

"Oh, how you gonna say that? How you gonna say that? Don't go dere wit me, son! Don't go dere!"

cod 4 isnt as challenging to me as halo 3. Both are great games but IMO halo 3's online component is more fun.
...using heroine.
I did that once. She saved some kids from a burning building and I had my way with her for the weekend. True story.

Two weeks ago I was playing halo 3 with a friend online, and I kept using COD4's controllers, is it me or does anyone else think the controller set up is a perfect fit for FPS games?

Well, what the mainstream likes is usually the crappiest, so it's about time that came true again.

I, Personally hate CoD4 and think it's a big, overrated steaming pile of garbage. If people had any taste, they'd be playing TF2.

Thanks. Your opinion is HIGHLY valued.

Well, that's all it is, my opinion.
I don't know how many kids I've seen playing TF2 or Halo 3 that will whine and bitch about TF2, saying they can't stand it, or don't want to try it because it's a "fucking Cartoon" and all this crap. People really are stupid.

It seems to me like the mainstream opinion nowadays is that it's uncool to like Halo anymore. It reminds me of when FF7 got popular, I dunno.

I hate when people say shit like that about the graphics. When I first showed people that game, that's all I heard.

The only thing that annoys me about Halo 3 is that when you climb the ranks, all the games just get frusterating because all people want to do is duck in a corner with a shotgun. Screw having fun, let's just do that instead. Thats more fun then balls to the wall combat.

well, people are shallow, what can you expect. Most younger people and a lot of dumb older ones just get involved in anything for the image it provides. CoD4 is cooler and more hip than either TF2 or Halo with their bright colors and space aliens, so naturally it's going to have a wider appeal, especially among the "GUTTA SHOT DEM TURRISTS" middle america crowd.

More popular doesn't mean more better. And yes, this is very much like the 3-4 month later backlash anything popular gets. CoD4 is just mainstream trash.
