Hell has frozen over -- daroga bought a PSP!

Good to hear you're enjoying the purchase, daroga. I might get one again someday, and i'll have someone to ask questions of for firmware/homebrew stuff.

But it really does have the feel of a portable console rather than a real handheld system. Not that it's bad, but if you don't know what you're getting, I could see it being a problem for someone.

I still think optical media in a handheld was a horrific idea, but, as always, a well-made game doesn't suffer from it. Daxter has a bit of an inital load but from then on it's pretty darn smooth. LocoRoco loads very well too. And ripping the games to the memory card make them act like DS games.

I've got another quick question about the downgrade/upgrade process. Is it really necessary to format your memory stick? If so, is backing up your saved games as easy as just copying the saved games to your computer and then putting them back in once you're done? Will saved games work on the custom firmware?

Edit: another question. I'm trying to downgrade from 3.03 to 1.5. My psp memory stick currently has 3 folders:
MP_ROOT, PSP, and utils. Do I copy the MS_ROOT folder from the downgrader into the main memory stick folder, or do I have to put it in one of those three folders (ie taking the folders from MS_ROOT and putting them in my PSP folder)?

Any help would be appreciated.
 
I still say an announcement for a new model of this will come in July... but it's good to be an adapter now since everything other than the system is so damn cheap.

price wise, from what I've gone through so far the DS and PSP are close. The DS hardware is cheap, but the games seem to be uppity in the price range. The PSP is a bit more expensive, but the games are damn cheap.

also, like you said earlier the DS and PSP stand equally, just in different areas of gaming. I still put more time into them than my 360 or PS2.

be sure to pick up the well priced 2 gig stick for $30 at EB games.

Called and they won't pricematch it either, but I did get a $1.71 adjustment (based on the current card price) and a $5 voucher on my account. Better than nothing I guess.

--yes, it's totally necessary to do every single last thing in the downgrading instructions. the people who get bricks are also the ones who think they can skip a step or two ;) you should format your memory stick before hand.

--yeah, you can store saves and copy them back. I still have saves from when I bought a launch psp, they still work with the custom FW.

--I don't know if it's different with 3.03, but if the instructions say "store the folder in the root" it means the base directory, not the MS_root folder. It's confusing since DAX doesn't clarify what he's talking about when he says "root"

Thanks for the help. I asked the same question earlier in the day at the psp-hacks forums and got this reply:

"jfunkdpg the things that are inside of the MS_ROOT folder go in root of your MS not in any other folder.(so you overwrite the psp folder)"

Before I do anything I'd like to make sure I'm clear on a few things first. The MS_ROOT that comes in the downgrader has a folder in it called PSP and inside that folder are the folders GAME, HEN303, and SAVEDATA. So, do I replace the PSP folder already on my memory stick with the one included in the downgrader? I'm sure these may or not be stupid questions but I'd like to be absolutely sure about what I'm doing as I'd rather not drop another $160 on a new PSP if I don't have to. Again, any help's appreciated.
 
jfunk, I was in the same boat as you last week.

Yeah, when it says MS_Root, that is actually the root of the Memory Stick. So any folder in there should overwrite any folder on the MS. Don't copy the MS_Root folder to the memory stick, but copy the contents of the folder to the root of the memory stick.
 
So I've downgraded to 1.5 successfully, now I'm ready for 3.4oe-a.... almost. The readme for 3.4oe-a says: Get the 1.50 and 3.40 Sony updaters (of any region, because all are
currently the same), and copy them in the oeupdmaker directory with the names 150.PBP and 340.PBP

Does he mean the official Sony firmware updates?

Also, I found another version of the 3.40oe-a update that's just an .exe file (I think I found it at PSP-hacks) called 34oeEasy. Has anyone used that instead?

Ok, I posted this in another thread but it seems like you guys might know the answers.

First, what files do I need? It seems as though there are several different versions of things floating around. I'm running 2.71 with a TA-082 board.

I've got a few different ones:
hend
ta082down
eboot_1.50
generic_downgrader(2.71)
2.71_ta-082_easy_downgrader_0.1...

After reading some more, I need to get a memory stick (hitting up EB tomorrow), execute the executable in the easy_downgrader file,
what files do I install? Does the easy_downgrader file have options to install files? (I haven't run it yet).
"run hend" - what does that mean?
execute idstoragechange - huh? On the PSP?
execute the generic downgrader - the one that talks about HENC in the readme?

I really don't want to brick my PSP!
 
First thing you do is put on HEN-D. It's actually jsut an image you view off of the memorystick that will then reboot the machine and be "on."

From there run idstoragechange, then the downgrader, then the custom firmware. As I posted in the other thread, the things tend to turn the backlight off completely. You didn't brick the system if that happens, just turn it back on.

Ok. That's very helpful. Thanks. :)

What about using the easy_downgrader? Does that install the necessary files on the PSP if I run it after connecting the PSP to the computer? That's what the readme implies.

Sorry for the noob questions but I'm not one to mod stuff EVER but that's why I bought the PSP.

Oh reading this thread sucks! I'm trying to talk myself out of getting a PSP again, but with Syphon Filter coming back, thats hard.

I did some homebrew before, but what does 3.04 oe, (or whatever it is) actually do? I just want to run some old nes roms. not looking to bootleg psp games. So does it just emulate new firmware to run new psp games or what?

For a while, you had to have a certain older firmware to use homebrew (like 1.5) but that severely limited the number of PSP games you could play.

The only problem that I see with it is that it's always going to be at least one version behind the current firmware, and there is a possibility that Sony could eventually figure out a way to make future updates to the custom firmware impossible, which might block you from playing future games (those that require firmware that is later than what you have). So far, though, it's been great.
 
So I upgraded my 2.81 PSP to 3.03, then downgraded to 1.5 without any problems.

My question is, which is better 3.03oe-c or 3.40oe-a? Is everything compatible with 3.40 that was compatible with 3.03? I don't have a PS3 so all the remote play crap doesn't matter to me.
