Hell has frozen over... Star Wars saga coming to BR in 2011!!!

Here's a sweet comment I found under the article where Lucas states we won't be seeing the original releases any time soon:

I refuse to buy this tripe. George Lucas forever sullied his name not so much with the low-quality kiddie movies he calls the prequels as with the destruction of the original three films. It pains me that the movies I grew up watching in movie theaters with my father will not be coming to Blu-ray. Or perhaps eventually they will, so that suckers who buy these affronts to the cinema gods can then go and buy second copies all over again, just like with the DVD releases. Han Solo shot first, there are no dinosaurs in the original movie, Cloud City doesn't have obviously added digital backgrounds, and the final scene in return of the Jedi involves silly Ewok music, not even sillier shots of the galactic capital full of CGI and even worse closing music. George Lucas is completely clueless and out of touch with what the general viewing public wants with his movies. Unfortunately it will take his death and the dissolution of any holding companies after it to rectify this cinematic injustice.

;)
Come now. People said the same thing when the Special Edition DVDs came out, and just a couple years later, we got our classic editions (half-assed though they were).

You can't have it both ways, people. He can't be greedily trying to milk the franchise for every dime it's worth by any means possible, and also be completely unwilling to release a second set of Blu-Ray releases that would obviously sell like hotcakes with the fans.
But he could have done a cleanup of the original release and put that out on DVD and it would have sold. Why not do that whole thing again on Blu Ray??

There's only two things that I don't care for in the special editions. Greedo and Hayden As Anakin's ghost. Nothing else really ruins the experience like those two scenes. I can take CGI add ons.
Did I read that right? Only the prequels?
Yeah. I watched the movies in order, instead of 4-6 followed by 1-3, so the originals just feel weird. I guess I got too attached to Hayden/Natalie/Ewan/etc. to give a fuck about the characters in the original trilogy. They're even showing them right now on Spike, but I just can't get into them.
Older? Aren't you already old?
Maybe he means older as in dead. You know, like he "bought the farm"?

;)

+1...This is exactly how I feel. I think Hayden as the ghost may bother me even more than Han not shooting first, but the rest of the changes I can deal with.
I'm fine with it since it doesn't look out of place. Unfortunately, George never filmed that scene and I don't want a CGI one.
It shouldn't be that hard to wear the Fett outfit. Go to the desert, dig a giant hole and have fett come out of it and walk away...then ILM comes in and adds the remains of Jabba's sail barge and the twin suns and there ya go!
the new Jabba's Palace song makes me sick.
Jabba's Palace song? You mean JEDI ROCKS?

I am in agreement with pretty much everyone else in here..... it needs to be the theatrical versions of the movies but fatass Lucas won't allow it. Oh well, I will still buy these on Bluray IF they aren't too expensive..... like under $100 would be good.

Firefly > Star Wars...or could have been, if Fox wasn't fucking retarded.

This is a hilarious review almost as long as the movie. Don't mind the voice, you'll get used to it. I recommend watching the whole review then many of his others.
great video link that last bit was really the truth none of the characters in the phantom menace had any personality. the only good part of that film was the fight with darth maul.
So the emporer built Luke's lightsaber?
Yea, that's what I thought it looked like too.

That clip is actually from Return of the Jedi, and it's not the Emperor - it's Luke. It shows him building his lightsaber then loading it into R2D2 (before sending the robots to Jabba's palace).

i seem to remember it wasnt until a few years ago that the original trilogy came out on dvd, so it wasnt that long of a wait, and im not defending lucas but shouldnt you say every other studio/director is milking a movie for releasing it on blu after its been on dvd?

I am really going to wait for the reviews for this one. No way I am shelling out that much money for a port over of all the previous releases. Unless they spent money and time going back and cleaning up some more shots and adding stuff in again. I read the 2004 release that a company was hired to redo the saber effects.....bullshit...same shit as the OR. I will be watching blu-ray.com and highdefdigest.com for the reviews in August when they get them.

I'm gonna wait it out then. I am not worried about pre-ordering it now. I am sure BB will have some sort of midnight launch like they did with the 2004 release.

Amazon won't charge you until it ships.

At least they are letting folks buy the OT with out having to buy the prequels. I was kinda sure Lucas would make people have to buy all 6 in one mega pack. As much as I love star wars and don't hate the prequels I'm not in too much or a rush to get the set. I still have yet to pick up a PS3 and this doesn't help push me over the edge any more.

hmm..I've never pre-ordered from Amazon before. That's good to hear that they won't charge until it's shipped. Once the reviews come in (which hopefully won't be too much fanboy reviews and more on the technical side...like for example if they give the PQ/AQ a 5 out of 5 for the OT...then something is up), I will make the final determination if I am going to keep the order or drop it. Thanks shrike.

Listen to this man. No reason not to order now if you're considering it. Can always easily cancel later and the price will never go up if you order, only down. When Grindhouse first popped up for like 13 bucks a couple of months back, some people hesitated, and then it went up to nearly 30 and we had a lot of regretful people. Wouldn't shock me if this went up like 10 bucks sometime soon.

Well, at least they're including the 1997 version in Hi-Def on the disc. The only part of the newer editions that really irked me was seeing Hayden Christensen's ghost with Obi and Yoda in the final scene of ROTJ. They need to hop in a flying Delorean and go back in time to stop that scene from ever being made.

Looking forward to this for sure, ditched my DVDs last year when ditching anything I planned on upgrading to Blu eventually before moving.

Placed my preorder at Amazon.

I got an HDTV recently. I am deciding whether to buy the EDITED original trilogy or not. The only parts that bothered me in the last release is the added CGI crap on Tattooine, the new Jabba palace song scene, and Christian Hayden at the end of Return of the Jedi. Maybe Greedo shooting first also.

The day will come when all the movies will be on one disc... That is theoretically possible the way that BR is heading towards..but the tech is still expensive :(

Nothing theoretical about it. There are already protypical optical media formats (the same physical size as a CD/DVD/BD) that hold 1 terabyte (that's 1000 gigabytes, versus Blu-Ray's 50).

I wasn't even aware that they changed all this business. Then again I don't think I've watched the movies since the early 90's. Definitely among my faves though.
