Well I have been out of the PC game market for years. The last games I played are the old Sierra/Lucasarts adventure games. I am returning to college in January and would like some decent games to play on my laptop. The computer isn't spectatular, its a 1.8 GHZ AMD with 512 memory. I tend to like simulation type games like the original sims, viva pinata, animal crossing,etc. I want a pretty deep game that I can play for some time. It can't be too new or it probably wouldn't run well on my computer. Any suggestions for some cheap games?

If you were into the LucasArts games, you should definitly pick up Grim Fandago and any of the Monkey Island series you missed. Another great adventure game that is newer is Fahrenheit aka Indigo Prophecy. Might check up on the specs, but I think you could get it running. And of course, the new Sam and Max series which you can buy online and download right away (Google it if you're interested).
As far as sim goes, theres tons and tons of stuff to choose from. 'Sim' is kind of a wide genre. Have you tried Civilization 3? Its a turn-based "civilization" sim letting you run a country from the stone-age up till today. If you're looking more for a business type sim, the Roller-Coaster Tycoon games are pretty solid and fun. If you want something more focused on war and battles, the Total War (Rome Total War, Medieval Total War, etc) are really fun but you need to have a certain ammount of hard-coreness about you.
There are really tons of good PC games out there, and 98% are backwards compatable! If none of these really appeal to you, let me know what you'd be more interested in and I'll get you some titles to look into.

I second Civilization 3 (or Civ 4 if your PC can handle it). It's a turned based strategy game - and offers loads of replayability.

I just got Galactic Civilization 2 - it reminds me a lot of Master of Orion 2 - but seems a lot more complicated/overwhelming - I just need to spend time listening to the tutorial and reading the manual.

If you like LA/Star Wars, I would recommend picking up Jedi Knight II. I believe it can be found in the Best of Star Wars collection that just came out. I would load that onto my laptop and play when I travelled, and it was a lot of fun, and it's an older game.
Other old games that your comptuer could probably handle:
- Blizzard Games: Warcraft/Starcraft/Diablo (each of these have Battle Chests you can get all the expansions with)
- Sim City/The Sims - The Sims 2 has high reqs though.
- Guild Wars - May work on your computer, It's a no-monthly-charge Online RPG, pretty fun, and low reqs. It's pretty cheap for the original now too.

I have to add that Galatic Civiliazations II is a game that you will be playing for a long time. I definitely recommend it!

civ3. And actually I would look into getting Gametap which also has Civ3 among 770 other games. IT's got alot of 3-7 yr old pc games which should play well on your system. It has SimTower and games like that too.

Europa 1400: The Guild, great sim, you basically control a family in a medieval town and you run a whole bunch of different shops, can get a private army. Pretty cool and you can get it cheap.
I also would suggest any of the Total War games, it has an RTS battle system like no other, but if you dont want to do that, you can have the fights be auto-resolved and just stick to the strategic part of it (building armies, marrying off royalty, diplomacy, war, etc)
