Help, I can't figure out how to start Zelda OoS!

I put Zelda: Oracle of Seasons into my GBA and the game comes on flawlessly. Then when I go to "pick a file" I choose "new game" and put in a name. All normal right? Wrong. I press "ok" and I return to the "pick a file" screen with the same three blank files to pick from. I can't start this game! Help, someone out there has to know what I'm doing wrong.

OK, I dug up the game just for you.

First, you have to name a save slot, then you have to press start while the red ball cursor is pointing to the (named) slot.
