Help me decide the 50 games I'll keep (you get the rest!)

http://users.ign.com/collection/normalmode

Call it a game collector's midlife crisis but gaming has become more important to me than collecting. I'm planning to just focus on these 50 titles for the next few years (I'm a game journalist by livelyhood so I'm sure new games will also keep me busy). I've started with my top 25 no-brainers that I'm eager to start or haven't played enough of (I'm shamefully realizing I'm a Japanese fanboy). It should give you a feel for my tastes:

Shinobi - PS2
Resident Evil 4 - GC
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - PS2
Nightshade - PS2
Sega Classics Collection - PS2
Vagrant Story - PSX
Silent Hill 3 - PS2
Silent Hill 4: The Room - Xbox
Outrun 2 - Xbox
Gradius V - PS2
Panzer Dragoon Orta - Xbox
Shining Force - Genesis
Shining Force II - Genesis
Shining Force CD - Sega CD
Shenmue - Dreamcast
Shenmue 2 - Xbox
Final Fantasy VII - PSX
Final Fantasy VIII - PSX
Final Fantasy IX - PSX
Final Fantasy Anthology - PSX
Final Fantasy Chronicles - PSX
Doom 3 - Xbox
Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War - PS2
The Legend Of Zelda Collectors Edition - GC
Ico - PS2

Since I've actually never played much of the games in my IGN list, what I'm looking for are intelligent suggestions to fill up the rest of the list with. Please take your time as I'll look favorably on thoroughness. What you get out of it is that I'll sell whatever I don't keep, giving first dibs and discounts to CAGs.

Looking at my list, I think I should add:
3 SRPGs with good stories, and good challenges without hitting any difficulty walls later in the game (No Nippon Ichi games, I'm burnt out on them)
3 Nintendo games that are at least 10 hours each
6 non-Japanese games (maybe a really good football and baseball game in there).
3 traditional RPGs
5 quality games that seem out of place from my initial list
2 racing games that aren't too simy
1 FPS
2 Shmups
Of course I'm open to other suggestions, but no more than 25 games total.

Some other things your should know about me:
-I'm a sucker for a good story
-I have a good tolerance for learning curves

My favorite Top 5 games of all time:
Wipeout XL
Shinobi (PS2)
Gunvalkyrie
Shenmue
Metal Gear Solid 3

95% of my games are complete (I'm very OCD).

Post or PM. Putting thought into your suggestions will earn you the most points. If your goal is to simply make my copies of Vandal Hearts, Persona 2, Panzer Dragoon Saga, etc. available, you'd better be subtle about it. I'll accept trades but obviously it has to be a game I'll enjoy and add to the list. I probably won't deviate much from what the game's going for on Ebay.

I'll also soon have my gaming media shwag, manga, anime, (I'm also a Japanese pop culture critic) and DVDs to put up for sale soon as well so stay tuned.

Oh, I forgot to add these imports (IGN didn't have them as choices):
Line Of Fire
Xenon 2 Megablast
Divine Sealing - unlicensed hentai shmup
Panzer Dragoon Mini
Bio-Ship Paladin
GG Aleste
Real 24 in 1
XDR X Dazedly Ray
Volfiev
Ultraman
Turma Da Monica Na Terra Dos Monstros - Brazilan version of the Genesis Wonder Boy but features a girl in a summer dress wielding a rabbit by the ears.
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Tetris (Sega)
Sailor Moon
PsyOBlade
Heavy Unit
Fre Pro Wrestling Gaiden
Strider
DJ Boy - very different from the US version, featuring a stereotypical black woman boss who has a fart attack
Dahna
Darwin 4081
Dangerous Seed
Crayon Shin Chan
What's Shenmue
Rez Special Package
Tomato: Wordimagesoundplay - from the same art collective as the electronic band, Underworld
Tondemo Crisis! - Incredible Crisis with the two deleted stages
Space Battleship Yamato
Maria: Sampagita
Nightstriker
Internal Section - Square shooter that lets you use music CD to create the game's backgrounds
Harmful Park - rare shmp
The Game Paradise 2
Galaxy Express 999
Dodge De Ball
Cosmowarrior Zero
Zenki

Here are my Suggestions of what you should add:

  1. Perfect Dark
  2. Super Mario 64
  3. Chrono Cross
  4. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
  5. Jet Grind Radio
  6. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
  7. Vagrant Profile
  8. Devil May Cry
  9. Xenogears
  10. Gungrave
  11. Deus Ex: The Conspiracy
  12. Fatal Frame
  13. Red Dead Revolver
  14. Legend of Dragoon
  15. Neo Contra
  16. Parasite Eve II
  17. Grand Trusimo 3
  18. Metal Gear Acid
  19. Suikoden III
  20. Ninja Gaiden
  21. Dino Crisis 2
  22. Tora! Tora! Tora!
  23. Internal Section
  24. Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising
  25. Metal Gear Solid(GameBoy Color)
  26. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
  27. Conker's Bad Fur Day
  28. Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War
  29. Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
  30. Red Faction II
  31. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
  32. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
  33. World Soccer Winning Eleven 7 International
  34. Katamari Damacy
  35. Onimusha 3: Demon Siege
  36. Max Payne
  37. Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
  38. Fear Effect
  39. The Mark of Kri
  40. Prince of Persia: Warrior Within
  41. Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
  42. Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
  43. Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams

For the essentials list (I have these games and love them): add Gunstar Heroes, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Phantasy Star IV, Katamari Damacy, and Super Mario 64. They're just fun, in my humble opinion. If you make any games available that I'm interested in, I'll check them out.

Good call on Shining Force II, as it's an excellent old-school SRPG. I wish my brother didn't screw up his copy by abusing that configuration code or whatever it is he did.

Got a converter to go with that copy of Sailor Moon, btw?

EDIT: Oh damn, someone else called Mario 64 and Katamari before I could finish. Oh well, que sera sera. In that case, add Castlevania: SotN and the original Parasite Eve.

Zenki[/QUOTE]

3 Nintendo games that are at least 10 hours each

little samson (an excellent game)
ninja gaiden(good story, and if you like shinobi you should like this)
castlevania(this probably isnt 10 hours, but who cares, it is arguably the best game of all time)

6 non-Japanese games (maybe a really good football and baseball game in there).

good baseball world series baseball either for saturn or genesis

for football i would suggest mutant league football

kotor, baldurs gate series(the pc games are the good ones) and PLANESCAPE TORMENT(easily the best rpg of all time).

3 traditional RPGs

valkyrie profile(you said you like good storyline and old school gameplay, well this has you covered)
secret of mana (you obviously like final fantasy)
dragon warrior 3(this is my favorite of the series)

you already have the shining force and final fantasy series covered.
these are the best traditional console rpgs of all time.

5 quality games that seem out of place from my initial list

gitaroo man (this could be expensive, but you dont have any rhythm/reflex games on your list so get either this or a DDR game)
persona1 and 2(dont get rid of these)
panzer dragoon saga(i would suggest playing it at least once before you sell it)
katamari damacy(this should be on your list somewhere)
castlevania symphony of the night (this is the best game on the ps1 hands down)

2 racing games that aren't too simy

mario kart doubledash
f zero

you said NON sim so there you go

1 FPS
goldeneye(for the n64)

2 Shmups
i would suggest spriggan and gate of thunder (both for the turbografx/duo)
or if you want crazy hard games, then get panzer dragoon orta and ikaruga
OR if you want horizontal shooters: rtype and lords of thunder

those are the 50 games you should keep that may not even be 50, but it is 5am and i am out of it. I dont want any of your games, i have too many but it is 5 am and i cant sleep so i felt like helping you with your midlife gaming crisis.

edit:

OK i just now took a look at your list. here are the ones that are worth keeping:

(starting from the bottom of the list, going up, these are based on your tastes)
sega cd
1 vay
2 popful mail
3 keios flying squadron
4 dungeon explorer
5 lords of thunder

saturn:
cotton 2
thunderforce v/special pack
shining force 3
shining wisdom
pds

N64
goldeneye
banjo kazooie
super mario 64

sms
Ys vanished omens
shinobi
space harrier
scramble spirits
r type
phantasy star
alien syndrome
alex kidd in miracle world

genny
space harrier 2
super monaco gp
shadowrun
rent a hero
phantasy star series
musha
herzog zwei
gunstar heroes
exile
golden axe

game gear
i cant help you here, i never owned one

gbc all of them(or none of them if you have other version of them and will never play these)

dreamcast
ikaruga
giga wing 2
chu chu rocket
power stone 2
project justice
rent a hero
samba de amigo
sword of the beserk

xbox
kotor
metal slug 3
ninja gaiden
pd orta
price of persia 1 and 2
return of the king
manhunt
everything or nothing

psp
lumines

ps2
yoshinoya(very fun game, funny characters) :whistle2:(

i suggest you trade for a nes and a snes too for that matter.

I would suggest you keep ALL of your imports, they may be tough to track down later( but if you play one, and hate it, then dump it onto ebay)

OK i narrowed it down to 110 games(in addition to your picks) so that leaves you at 135 games

here is what you do:

you dont have to narrow it down to 50(unless you promised your wife you are narrowing it down to 50, then you are hosed)

I i have to narrow this list of 110 down to 25... egad that will be tough but here goes:

sega cd
vay
keios flying squadron
lords of thunder

saturn:
cotton 2
thunderforce v/special pack
shining force 3
shining wisdom
pds

N64
goldeneye
super mario 64

sms
Ys vanished omens
shinobi
r type

genny
shadowrun
rent a hero
phantasy star series
gunstar heroes

game gear
i cant help you here, i never owned one

gbc all of them(or none of them if you have other version of them and will never play these)

dreamcast
giga wing 2
power stone 2
project justice
rent a hero
samba de amigo

xbox
kotor
metal slug 3
ninja gaiden
pd orta
price of persia 1
manhunt
everything or nothing

psp
lumines

ps2
yoshinoya(very fun game, funny characters)

i would suggest trading the sega master system package for a nes or snes package. Its just really weird that you have a sms but no nes. That would be the equivalent to getting an atari jaguar or a panasonic 3do and not geting a snes or genesis(the nes was a far superior system to the sms)

definate keeps, at least imho, would be Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Symphony of the Night, Final Fantasy Tactics, Parasite Eve, Beyond Good & Evil, Grandia 2 (even though Ryudo's voice is aweful), and Phantasy Star 4 - these have been some of my personal favorites to date and I still play FFT from time to time to build up my characters.

I tried to stay as close as possible to what you were asking for... it's amazing how quickly you can fill a 50 game quota. BTW, if you decide to sell Pepsi-Man (psx), I would really like first dibs.

3 Strategy RPGs:
dark wizard (sega cd) -- one of the best ever!
growlansers generations (ps2)
arc the lad collection (psx)

3 Nintendo games > 10 hrs:
Super Mario 64 (n64) -- really, no n64 should be without this
paper mario: 1000 year door (gc)
super smash bros melee (gc)

6 non-Japanese games:
beyond good & evil (ps2) -- should have sold 3,000,000 copies
sly cooper (ps2)
star wars: kotor (xbox) -- if you like star wars, this is required playing
prince of persia : sands of time (xbox)
crimson skies: high road to revenge (xbox)
banjo-kazooie (n64)

3 RPGs:
panzer dragoon saga (saturn)
shining the holy ark (saturn)
skies of arcadia legends (gc)

5 out-of-place games (+2 bonus games):
katamari damacy (ps2)
sky odyssey (ps2)
fatal frame 2 (xbox)
ninja gaiden (xbox)
gitaroo man (ps2)
victorious boxers (ps2)
neon genesis evangelion (n64)

2 non-sim racing games:
beetle adventure racing (n64)
R4: RR type 4 (psx)

1 FPS:
metroid prime (gc)

2 Shmups:
einhander (psx)
keio flying squadron (sega cd) -- $250+ on eBay - if you have this, hang on to it!

Stuff I didn't see on your list that you would probably like:
dragon force (saturn) -- one of the best strategy RPGs ever
radiant silvergun (saturn) -- the king of shmups!
god of war (ps2)
Morrowind GOTY (xbox)
burnout 3 (xbox)
princess crown (saturn) -- one of my favorite games ever, period
road trip (ps2) -- an underrated, light-hearted rpg/racing game

Seriously, just 50 games? Madness, I say!!

Also, if you should happen to end up selling Resident Evil Gaiden, could I get dibs on it? I honestly haven't played it yet so my opinion wouldn't matter on it, I just want it for collection value.

Damn... You're going to keep 50 out of 1100+ games? This isn't going to be easy... I would help but I haven't played 75% of the games on that list.

Thanks again guys. If you don't mind waiting a couple days, I'll be addressing all your requests. I'm pretty optimistic about being able to part with Pepsiman (which IS fun) and Resident Evil Gaiden (just not my cup of tea I realized). Oh, and please don't consider monetary value of games you're recommending to me unless you really suspect it will appreciate more in price in the next 2-3 years (like a least $50 more).

I considered the games on account of quality. SMT Nocturne has nowhere to go but up, much to my disdain (damn Chrono Trigger Syndrome). Enjoy what you are keeping.

Dang, how the heck are you going to decide who gets dibs on what? Maybe a 5 game limit to each person? You're going to have heck of a time trying to organize everything.

But I offer you good luck. And I'll be here in line trying to get some of your games.:D

Count me in the pool too, I hope.

Definition of Chrono Trigger Syndrome, btw: the excessive appreciation in value of cult favorite items due to their having been snatched up ages ago by asshole collectors who do nothing but look at them.

You actually play your games, on the other hand. Kudos.

SMT: Nocturne is actually unusual, as well as a couple other Atlus games I have (my copy of Sky Gunner comes to mind). For the past couple years, if you did press coverage of Atlus games, they gave you 95% complete discs (that you could actually play on retail PS2s, as opposed to debug units). Unfortunately they only come in cardboard sleeves (nice sleeves mind you). They're obviously playable, but usually there are parts in the game that aren't fully translated and also still need to be copy edited. Perhaps that incompleteness would actually appeal to the hardcore Atlus fan.

That is a very large list. Too hard to sift through it all and choose which games to pick without accidently missing another.

That being said...

Can I have dibs on:

Brave Fencer Musashi
All Castlevania's all systems
Yoshi's Story

These games you don't need.

Chris

That's pretty cool.

Considering I can read a bit of Japanese, I'm even more interested!

/not a hardcore Atlus fan
//just want to play an SMT game

3 SRPGs with good stories, and good challenges without hitting any difficulty walls later in the game (No Nippon Ichi games, I'm burnt out on them): Chrono Trigger- found in Final Fantasy Chronicles (PS1), Chrono Cross (PS1), and Grandia (PS1)

3 Nintendo games that are at least 10 hours each: Super Mario 64 (N64), Animal Crossing (GC), Eternal Darkness (GC)

6 non-Japanese games (maybe a really good football and baseball game in there): NBA Street (PS2), Grand Theft Auto III (PS2), Grand Theft Auto Vice City (PS2), Halo (XB), Beyond Good & Evil (PS2), and Medal of Honor (PS1)

3 traditional RPGs: Lunar 2 (PS1), Wild ARMs (PS1), and Grandia (PS1)

5 quality games that seem out of place from my initial list: Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time/Master Quest (GC), Final Fantasy Anthologies (PS1), Metroid Prime (GC), Soul Cailbur II (GC), and Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)

2 racing games that aren't too simy: Mario Kart Double Dash (GC) and Wipeout 3 (PS1)

1 FPS: Goldeneye (N64)

2 Shmups: Ikaruga (GC) and R-Type Delta (PS1)

There... hope that's all right and good. I tried to avoid doubles and had to move some things around a bit but I think it's a good list. I only put in stuff that I've played. Yeah, I grew up with Nintendo.:D

IF you are not keeping these games, i would love to take them off your hand ;)

Bust A Groove
Bust A Move 2: Dance Tengoku Mix
Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix
Front Mission 3
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Policenauts
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Suikoden II
Tactics Ogre
Gitaroo-Man
Rez
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner
Harvest Moon 64
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber

Have some patience...

I have the sinking feeling that this really nice person is going to end up keeping SMT Nocturne and pretty much all of the "good stuff".

I'd have a hrd time making recommendations since I am not as knowledgeable as alot of the people here. I can say that I am very interested in 60+ games from your collection. I guess I'll just patiently await for when you start a true sale thread. Good luck trimming that down to 50.

If you decide not to keep them I would be very interested in Persona 1 and 2 and also Gitaroo Man and Rez.

I would reccommend Burnout 3(Revenge when it comes out) as a non sim racing game, also a non-Japanese game could be God of War, and I would definately keep SMT: Nocturne and one of my fav PS1 RPGs Wild Arms.

well, i obviously don't know as much about games as most of the other posters, but i would be willing to take some of the older titles of gamecube games off you hands considering i just got a cube. some i've been looking for:

zelda WW
animal crossing
Resident Evil (figure this would be a good place to begin the franchise)
pikmin
some others...i'll check back and see what's left after you finish carving out your collection

FWIW, i wasnt listing games so much as dollar value, but it just so happens that the good games are worth more(at least for the older systems like Ys for the sms or keios flying squadron or vay for the sega cd)

add shadow hearts 1 and 2 for your rpg needs.

you have almost the exact same taste as me, so ill suggest legend of mana for the psone, the love or hate game.

No longer interested in your Nocturne, getting it from another generous soul in a matter of a week or two.

Still interested in Sailor Moon and possibly Tondemo Crisis! too, since I recently discovered my boyfriend's older-than-dirt PSX can play imports.
