I'm interested in getting a handheld system and I was wondering what peoples opinions of the DS and PSP are. I dont know a whole lot about either and I'm curious about the arguments for and/or against each one. And begin ...

Look at the games out for each and see which has ones you'd want to play. I don't own either but my impression is the PSP doesn't have very many good games out right now. The DS has a few that intrigue me (mainly due to the touch screen factor) but those are mostly really short ones - Feel the Magic, Pac Pix, Warioware Touched, probably some I'm forgetting). Personally I'm waiting for price drops and more games that interest me.

PSP
pros: graphics, ability to play mp3s and UMD movies
cons: price, many games are basically PS2 ports

DS
pros: unique hardware, unique games, more than a decade of handheld experience
cons: less powerful

How do you feel about Nintendo? If you think they are one of the greatest developers around, you will most likely be happy with DS. But if you think they are a kiddie company and could care less about their games, go for PSP.

Plus, all the homebrew software on the PSP is starting to get really exciting. You'll be able to play a decade's worth of console games on the go :D

As a true cheap ass DS all the way. DS $150 W/ Mario 64 act fast! PSP $250. DS Games $20-$40 New. PSP games $40-$50 a pop new.

DS is a CAG system. PSP is for deep pockets.

Personally, I feel that the DS has more must play games right now with WarioWare: Touched, Yoshi Touch N Go, Kirby, Meteos, Feel the Magic, plus the backlog of GBA games. The PSP has a few goodies with Lumines, Wipeout, and well that's all that stands out to me. That isn't to say the PSP doesn't have its other charms (MP3 playback). I don't count UMD playback, because those are the stupidest things in the world. Anyway. If you want an MP3 player or a digital video player, I would get one of those. If you want a device to play games, I would get a DS.
Wrong place to ask, heh.

You just get crap opinions by people who only own one system (like the above post).
Thats quite alright. Interesting opinions. So far the DS is sounding good. Plus the Mario 64 sounds mighty tempting. The lower prices of games is nice too (of course being the cheap ass bastard I am ;) ). I wasnt aware there was such a discrepancy in prices of new games.

I don't like how the DS feels in my hands. Haven't played a PSP however.
It also seems all DS games are made to be played in five minute spurts, whereas PSP games might be better for longer commutes.
(are all DS games going to start having "feel" or "touch" in the title?)

If you don't mind being somewhat "behind the times," you might consider the much cheaper GBA SP. This is compatible with all the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color titles (that the DS can't play), and you'll save yourself a load of money in the process.

If you try handheld gaming and decide it's not for you, you'll have a lot lower investment in the SP than with the DS or PSP. If you go with one of the more expensive options, you'll have only yourself to blame if your system of choice doesn't fulfill your expectations.

Not that big of a discrepancy, DS game cost $30-$40, and PSP games cost $40.
($50 PSP games are crappy, made by EA, so they don't count. Only losers buy them)

And the game lineups are pretty much even.

DS probably wins at puzzle games (though PSP does have Lumines, the highest rated puzzle game since tetris, but IMO it gets old fast) and platformers, and the occasion Nintendo unique title like Wario Ware. The PSP wins when it comes to console style games, like racing and action, and especially FPS.

As far as other genres go, strategy, adventure, and RPG games will most likely be evenly divided between PSP and DS.

It all depends on what genre you like, me I am an action gamer so I bought the PSP, and I am very satisfied with it.

I own both systems.

DS: I love the Kirby and Wario Ware.

Soon to love the Meteos, Nintendogs, Castlevania, Square games, Animal Crossing, Lunar and many more...

PSP: I love the Hot Shots Golf.

Winner in my mind is DS.
I keep hearing about Nintendogs. Why is there so much buzz about this game?
That is the one thing I don't understand.

I hate sim games with every fiber of my being, and how this game could be the top selling handheld game is mind boggling.

It's Japan. Think about. This is coming from the land where people will buy a grocery store sim game when they work in a grocery store.

I expect it to sell well here, but nothing like it did in Japan.
Thanks wubb. By the way .. is that one of the penguins from Beakmans World? That show was awesome.
I have no idea. I just thought the penguin looking at my posts in sadness is a decent avatar. I figured he's a mascot for some minor league hockey team or something, but I really don't know. Did a quick Google to see if he's from Beakman's but I couldn't find a pic of them.

I think that's the penguin from Trigger Happy TV.

I'm not looking to get either, but I've heard that the best thing to do is wait 'til the holidays and hope for some price cuts. Maybe the better deal will help make up your mind for you.

Did you just pull that out of your ass?? I went to EBgames.com to look @ the prices of new games that are out for the PSP and the DS.

$50
PSP: 10 Games (45.5% of PSP games)
DS: 0 Games

$40
PSP: 12 Games (54.5% of PSP games)
DS: 3 Games (12.5% of DS games)

$35
PSP: 0 Games
DS: 2 Games (8.3% of DS games)

$30
PSP: 0 Games
DS: 19 Games (79.2% of DS games)

I am not a Nintendo fanboy. I'm a chepass fanboy.

Just to make a correction to what the quack said a few posts ago, DS does FPS better. WAY better. If you play PC FPS, it's all natural with the nub.
