Well my hard drive is making some strange noises, so before it crashes I'm looking for a new computer. I know at the very least I can replace the harddrive, but the computer is almost 4 years old, so I wouldn't mind upgrading.

I do a good ammount of gaming on it, so I would need something with a good processor/RAM/graphics card, but nothing crazy, I don't need to run Doom 3 on the best settings.

I'm looking to spend between $500 - $800 if at all possible, but would entertain something a little higher.

Thanks in advance for any help.
i spent 400 bucks on a nice one from directpc.com
i had a dvd burner and everything.
no monitor though. but its worth it.
I don't need a new monitor, and I would be comfortable building it or picking parts from a website.

Just curious, what were the specs on yours?

i think it was like 40 gig hard drive, dvd+-r/cd+-r burner the basic(modem, basic motherboard, floppy drive, etc...)i didnt buy windows xp, i had a burnt copy already. i really can't think of all the things, but check the site, the people there are real cool too. this one chick called me like all the time, her name was melissa, she sounded cute and she called me after i ordered and she made sure everything was okay. I wish she didnt live in canada.

You can always check the sunday ads for CC and BB sales. It's pretty easy to get a good sub $400 PC each week.

2800+ 64 proc $120
Chaintech VNF3-250 mobo $75
Value Select 512 (or 1024) Muskin/Corsair RAM $120
SuperFlower 350 PSU $45
9800PRO/6600GT graphics card $200
Chaintech 7.1 soundcard $30
NEC 3520A DVD burner $65

Think that about covers it. If you don't need to buy XP, that should keep you well within budget. And it's an awesome budget gaming rig, and much better than anything you can buy at a retail store for the same price.

I'm having trouble finding a good website that lets you pick your parts and they build the tower and send it to you. Anyone have any reccomendations?
They may be a touch higher than your budget right now, but they are great at putting together exactly what you want. I have bought 3 from them over the years and have had no problems that weren't my fault, clocking, etc.

Hope this helps.
Do you, or anyone else who wants to look, have any input on the "Gamer Ultra 6000 SE" on the front page under AMD Athalon 64 Showcase? That seems reasonable but I don't always know specifics.

I don't like it. Reasons:

*The PSU is "generic". If NOTHING else in your system, you want a good, quality power supply.
*The motherboard is on the VIA chipset, which is inferior to the NForce chipset and more expensive.
*OnBoard sound. Gaming is CRAP with onboard sound.
*The HDD is Hitachi and has a 2MB cache.
*The graphics card is weak.

Yeah, um, basically everything about it. It's nearly the same price as what I listed, which will beat this system any day of the week. Add another $70-80 to what I said for HDD, and a case, which I left out.

Hmmm building as computer completely from scratch would be possible, but probably a last resort as I have never done it before, but I will definately keep your setup in mind, because due to money, it may come down to that.

zipzoomfly.com
also look at newegg specials.
i used zipzoom to buy my main pc parts.
on newegg i just ordered some ram and keyboard.
www.ibuypower.com is a good one.
I have a friend who has done 3 computers through them now.

After a few tweaks they all work fine and he got exactly what he wanted.
