hi i bought my ps3 2 years ago...
i know there is that $100 back on a credit card, but my friend doesnt want to sign up for a credit card.

do u guys know any deals that can help save my friend some $$?

he is considering the 399 core pack.

but maybe there is something out that is better?

First of all tell him to buy the $499 MGS4 bundle. The extra $100 is definitely worth the extra 40GB, Dualshock 3 controller (as opposed to the Sixxaxis that comes with the 40GB version), and MGS4.
Secondly tell him to buy it from a place that doesn't charge sales tax. Depending on your state, sales tax on a few-hundred-dollar item like the PS3 can be a good $50. Getting it without sales tax is the best deal you're gonna find. I bought mine from Amazon before they started charging sales tax in NY. I don't know where you (or your friend) lives but here's the deal for now:
"Items sold by Amazon.com LLC, or its subsidiaries, and shipped to destinations in the states of Kansas, Kentucky, New York, North Dakota, or Washington are subject to tax."

Hope I helped!

Wait awhile, the 80GB will be moved down to the same price as the 40GB. With any luck, small retailers MIGHT decrease the price of the 40GB they have in stock. Who knows? By that time he might have already saved up enough money.

Yeah, with all the flipping I've done lately, I've been considering getting a PS3... but I think I'll stick with the core pack, m'self, since I won't be getting it for a few months at least. It'll have the aforementioned 80 gb hard drive, presumably a DS3, and by that time MGS4 should be pretty cheap, given how many copies were sold and how many are getting traded back.

There's always that outside chance that there'll be a MGS4: Substance edition of some sort, which would probably end up being the definitive copy to own. Even more reason to wait a while.

Not true, what Sony will be doing is replacing the 40 gb hdd in their future "40gb" units, if that makes any sense, the MGS4 bundle is limited and won't see a price drop. Sony will stop making 40gb units and make 80gb units that are the same as old 40, only differences will be bigger hdd.

Ah, no wonder, that makes sense. Well the only option you have is to wait to save up money or wait for another good deal to pop up. You're pretty much S.O.L. if you don't look on Ebay or Craigslist.
