Help me to register my own domain name

I am planning on registering a domain name for a project I am working on but I have no idea what to look for when selecting a company to register with. I did some searching and I found the following -

1&1 Internet Inc.

Yahoo! Small Business Domains

Go Daddy

Any opinions on these? Any other suggestions?

Also, if I register my domain with one company, am I stuck with that company forever or, since I would own the name that I choose, can I go to another company when it is time to renew the name?

I've heard good things about Go Daddy, no personal experience with them however.

Also, you get a free domain if you sign up for their current 6 month free trial thing.

(And you can transfer domains from co. to co., though there's usually a small fee)
