Help! My older brother wants my dreamcast for his 4 year old son!

so here I am, now with the PS2, XB, and Cube....

I stopped playing my Dreamcast around Spring of 2004 in favor for my new Cube... Although I still have the DC and the games are around, my brother came into my room when he was visiting and asked if I still play my DC and if I had any games for his 4 year old son to play (to have). Now given the fact that the DC is impossible to get a hold of in the stores, the idea of giving a system away that cannot be easily replaced worries me...sure if my PS2/XB/Cube breaks, i can always run out and get a new system or the next generation system as it would play the previous system games, but the DC...cannot be replaced :whistle2:(

Another thing is that i personally don't want to get the kid hooked on video games that early... Although I don't have any real violent games on the DC (mostly 2 player games I use to play with my ex back in the day), the idea that a 4 year old will take my dream cast and play/break the system and scratch the games up is unimaginable :whistle2:(

Any advice?
 
Say no. Recommend an SNES or other system off of eBay. Or else there will be a peanut butter and jelly sandwich jammed in your Dreamcast in the near future.

You are right though. Four is too young to start playing video games.
 
Tell your cheapass brother that you love him, but it'll cost 200 dollars for your DC. It's a collector's item after all.

Also I agree 4 is too young, a gameboy advance maybe but I have a nephew that won't play with toys at the age of 5 because he spends all his time on video games. It's not natural.

I almost, almost gave my nephew my DS (that I got in Feb) when the lite came out...then I saw how he leaves his toys around and I am thinking, he's gonna crack the screen on that thing in a week :whistle2:|

My nephew is getting use to playing those cheap TV Plug and Play games like spiderman, star wars and old atari games like frogger.

the nearest GameCrazy is in Manassas, which is like 30 minutes away :whistle2:(
 
Very simple, say no. If he has a problem with it, that's his own personal problem. You don't go around asking people for their stuff, and if they say no, you get pissed or whatever. No-no. Have him go buy a used Cube and something like Animal Crossing for the little monster.

hes my brother, and he's done a lot for me. I don't think his wife would want her son to be hooked on video games this early.
 
Well you can pick a used one up off ebay fairly cheap so if you miss it in the next couple years it shouldn't be all that hard to replace.

But I agree, 4 is a bit young to give a kid a system. Perhaps you can suggest he should buy his son a GBA?
 
There are lots of venues to pick up used DCs on the cheap. Maybe you could do your bro a favor and pick up one for him from a used game shop, pawnshop, thrift store, or online?

Then again, maybe he singled out the DC because he knew you weren't using it. You could offer something else, if you are that worried.

And parenting your brother's child is not your responsibility. As far as you are concerned, you are giving your brother what he requested and what he does with it is his business.

So give them a call and see if they have one. A 30 minute drive for a cheap dreamcast is well worth it.
 
I would suggest the Gamecube for sure... I think they are like $60 often used and there is a better collection of games for someone that age... Plus the DC games were notoriously bad for durability so they wouldn't likely last to long based on what you are describing. Keep in mind that there is a lot of data at the edges of DC discs meaning that edge scratches even from taking a game out of the case badly can ruin them.
 
Yeah, like everyone is saying go buy a used system for him or give him your cube and wait for the Wii or buy another one for yourself.

Exactly what I was thinking. You wouldn't go to his house, ask if he was using his PS2 then ask to have it if he said no. Tell your brother to get him a GBA(they're $20 used at GS), since the games are usually short(which most 4 year olds have short attention spans).

Seeing this thread reminds of my older brother asking for my SNES stuff so my nephews can have it. This was right after I spent $100 on Super Metroid, Zelda, Mario World & All-Stars and some others. Of course he got pissed when I said no. But I've been to his house and see how his kids treat game systems. They've went through 3 Xbox controllers & 3 copies of Halo in the past year(I'm not going to even say what's wrong with letting 4 & 5 year old kids play M rated games). So I know if I let him have it, it would've been broken by the weekend.
 
Tell him to get his kid a V-Smile. I got my daughter one and she loves it. It teaches letter recognition and other things. It's a video game system and an educational tool all in one. If that doesn't fly, give hime the Gamecube. That gives you a good reason to go get a Wii for yourself!
