Help Needed -- Novice PC Gamer needs FPS game controller

andrew333

CAGiversary!
I am sitting here with Far Cry and I can't stand using the keyboard to control the character (the mouse isn't so bad). I think I would like to get a controller similar to an xbox-s. I realize that my control may not be as precise but i am confident my fun factor will increase.

Can someone suggest a brand, model and retail location?

Keyboard and mouse combo, as you mentioned would be more precise, but this looks pretty good, and has the rumble feature included.

Ok, it comes down to whether or not you can ever adjust to the mouse/keyboard combo. It is BY FAR superior if you stick with it. Precision is unmatched.

The real problem comes from the quick keys. What you need is this...

I know it looks freaky and your inclination is to go to what you know and feel comfortable with, a pad. But let me tell you, youre instincts are wrong.

I guarantee you if you will properly map the pad and get used to it, you WILL kick fuck ing ass. Theres a reason why this product is so highly rated and ends up as a top accessory in many of the "dream Pc" builds.

Don't use a controller. You'll get use to the keyboard and the mouse. Don't use that retarded thing supadupacheap linked to either.

Its obvious youve never used one so how you can offer up an opinion on something you know very little to nothing about is beyond me.

*Edit* Other people and well known and trusted game/computer sites that think its not "retarded"

Some of your fellow CAGers. (please note, they disagreed with VGMs "retarded" claim as well.

There is a reason why this product is so highly regarded in the gaming community. Bring your cheesy keyboard and hotkey mapping to one of our LAN parties and let us eat you alive.

Pesonally I SWEAR by my Nostromo n52, however, if you must use a controller I recommend Logitech. I use a Logitech dual action (similar to what howlinmad suggested, just no rumble and about $10 cheaper) and for games like Psychonauts the damn things perfect, though I hear good things about the Nyko airflow. You could also get a usb adaptor for the s-type. Play-Asia's got one for $15.90 http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-6m-70-czw.html

I have that adaptor and it is a really nice one. I have not tried it with all that many games, but it works pretty well

I would suggest the Belkin Speedpad as well if you are used to a controller and have trouble adapting to a keyboard. You can use the D-pad on the speedpad to replace the A,S,D,W keys for movement in combination with the mouse still for precision aiming. Works wonders for people migrating from consoles to computer games.

Good call but not overly stellar. It wont tick you off but will leave you longing for more.

Excellent controller but a bit more $$$ and much harder to come by lately. Id love to have one myself but Im too cheap to pay the recent asking prices.
Newegg!!!

Thanks for the link. I should have checked there. Brain freeze I guess. #-o

My trouble isnt so much the actual $ figure but the adding up of all the stuff I have/want. Ive got a giant UHaul box FULL of PC accessories, joysticks, etc etc that I was sure I would use constantly.

I still say the Nos is the #1 accessory to have for a PC if you ever use the keyboard alot for non typing functions.

A nice controller isnt as great, especially for an FPS. Mouse + Nos = unlimited power (if you stick with it) But as a more well rounded solution (platformers, racers, etc) its a better call.

I suggest you stay with the keyboard and mouse. Play PC games the way they were meant to be played.

Also that pad device is nice, but don't be fooled into thinking that if you buy it you will be better at a game. Those things are primarily for convenience and in reality offer little advantage. In fact I would suggest you get a good logitech mouse with lots of buttons and then download the logigamer button editor, and can you use it for left or right handed mice.

I back the recommendation of using the keyboard/mouse combo. Control is unmatched. When I first played TFC, I thought who in the hell would want to play PC games, but I stuck to it and love it. It's part of the reason I won't play PC ports for consoles, the controls always kill me.

But I have used one. It's a $25 keyboard for your hand. Big fucking deal. And you play at lan parties

Why is it everything you say comes across like you are a 12 year old kid trying to deperately to look "cool". Maybe if you seemed less juvinile and more constructive in your criticisms, people would take you seriously.

Yeah, if you want to break it down to its most basic level, its a $25 keyboard for your hand. However, I and many many others have found it to be far superior for the FPS task as it pares down a full side keyboard to something more managable while still retaining the full range of neccessairy functions.

Will your abilties increase the second you pay your $25? No. Will they improve greatly over time if you stick with it and ultimately surpass what they'd be with keyboard alone? For most of us, yes.

I will be the first to admit it looks like a pc geeks toy, high on form, low on function. But those of us who tried it and stuck with it tend to find it is anything but a "toy"/

Haha. Im being slammed for participating in LAN events by a guy who has what is widely considered one of the worst if not THE worst SNL skits ever to be turned into a movie as his avatar.

Yeah, ok. Im a LAN dork and you obviously have attained a level of cool even James Dean would be envious of.

i bought the logitech pad and was totally unsuccessful in trying to use it for "far cry", i totally could not figure out how to map the controls (most notably, the analog sticks)

am i stupid? :)

No, you are not stupid. A lot of the programs written for PC controllers are hack jobs at best.

Just reread any instructions and google info from other users who have successfully tried it. Usually there is one key trick or piece of info thats left out by the maker but the "net" figures out and distrubutes.
will do, thanks much -- although i am starting to think that mouse and keyboard ain't so bad lol
Again, the Nos *CAN* be much better than the keyboard. Thats not to say it is for everybody. There is no such product that pleases 100% of the people.

I, and many of my fellow gaming friends, found it to be very very useful, almost essential to our gaming. Does that me everybody will? No. But I am a firm believer in giving the device a fair shot (by using it enough that its lack of helpfulness is NOT based on you being unaccustomed to it) With all the negativity here I feel a lot of people are scared off from even trying it which is a shame because it may really be a great improvement for them.

As I said, for me and many others, its a great great device. Will YOU find it to be the same? Cant say. But I think the only way anybody is going to know is trying it for themself, NOT discussing the hypothetical pros and cons on an internet message board.

That's the best you can do? I insult you for attending lan parties and you bash me for liking A Night at the Roxbury? Lame.

That's great if that hand keyboard makes you play better. It would be a waste of money and a pain in the ass to use seeing as how I have no desktop. A normal keyboard fits on my lap so I can play in a non akward position. Also, how would you type out messages without any letter keys? :whistle2:s

Did you ever think that maybe the intent wasnt to "best you"? My point was simply you act like a juvinile at just about every opportunity. Pointing out your like for what is widely considered a juvinile movie merely supported my original statment which is you dont come across as incredibly brilliant (whether you are or not, I dont know. What you display makes you appear not)

What does YOUR desktop have to do with THIS OP benefit or not benefitting from the stated product. If you didnt own a motorcycle does that mean since its "retarded" for you to own a helmet nobody else should buy and use one?

And come on man, at least show some reasonable thinking skills. Of course this isnt meant to REPLACE a keyboard. Its meant for gaming. If you are busy using in game chatting in all your FPS'ing, shouldnt you look into a headset? If you just wanted to type out messages to all your friends, why spend money on a game?

Now run along, go think up your snappy response that you think will pwn me,put me in my place or make you the roXors of the internet. It wont. Hell, I wont even care and mostly likely you will only look even dumber than you already do. But hey, if that your thing and makes you feel better about yourself, do go right ahead.

P.s. The saddest part of all is if you stopped acting like the kid you are and started acting like the person you wanted to be, youd probably have a lot to contribute. Oh well. Here's hoping you figure that out for yourself someday. Best of luck.

haha you're a douche. Look cool on the internet, wow you're a genious. Spend all my time chatting with friends? I can type on the go but thanks for the suggestion. The handkeyboard is meant for gaming, alright. Well the op just now bought Far Cry so I don't think he's going to need a handkeyboard for hardcore gaming right now. But how about this. OP, if you turn into a lan nerd and play FPS on your PC all the time, pick up the handkeyboard.

That thing looks cool, never seen it before. Honestly, Ive been PC gaming forever and never seen the need to replace the keyboard. Ive got the Logitech gaming mouse (excellent buy btw) and a logitech keyboard that works fine for me. Does the gampad actually make that big of a difference?
